San Saba Garden Club taking applications for college scholarship
Thursday, January 31, 2013 • Posted January 30, 2013

The San Saba Garden Club is pleased to announce the offering of college scholarship money in the amount of $1000 to a high school senior or college freshman as a part of the District V, Texas Garden Clubs, Inc. The deadline for entry applications is March 1, 2013.

The purpose of the Garden Club grant is to encourage study and continued practice of Horticulture, Floriculture, Landscape Design, Conservation, Forestry, Botany, Land and Water Management, and acceptable allied subjects. Applicants must be Texas residents and living in District V, have a scholastic record of 3.0 (B average or better), and definite plans to continue in the discipline in which the scholarship is granted.

Former San Saba High School students who have received this scholarship in the past decade are Brenda Gibson and Stephanie Stewardson. Brenda graduated in 2008 and attended Tarleton State University, majoring in Agronomy and Range Management. She now resides in Eldorado where she is using her skills she achieved in college for her first job as an employee of an agricultural business.

Stephanie attended Texas A&M University after graduating from San Saba High School in 2003. Her field of study, Landscape Design and Horticulture, landed her a great opportunity in her career today as a landscape designer and project leader in the San Antonio area. These girls, along with their parents, say they were so appreciative of the scholarship award and the financial assistance it offered them in their college days.

The San Saba Garden Club would be thrilled to have a hometown student receive this award once more.

Any San Saba County student who meets the above requirements and wanting to apply for this scholarship may contact and receive an application from Mrs. Dana Pannell, SSHS counselor, or Debbie Shahan, Youth Committee Chairman for the San Saba Garden Club. Applications will take a while to complete, so please keep in mind the March 1st due date.
