Many of our students lack the vocabulary needed to succeed in the state curriculum. Assessment reveals that many students are language poor. Understanding that words used in curriculum are important. Can you identify which subject these words are used:

Measure

Slope

Velocity

Summary

Quadrilateral

Industrial Age

Thesis

Conflict

Aggression

Regression

If you can identify the subject these word are used, can you tell a story about each word and illustrate (draw a picture) them? In other words, do you fully understand the context in which these words are used? Can words have more than one meaning if used in two different classes, such as “measure” or “conflict”?

Certain words have certain meanings specific to the content being delivered. Understanding the dictionary definition is merely not enough. Students need to be able to understand how the vocabulary relates to the subject. Many students need a strong application of vocabulary in the content to be successful. Vocabulary has always been important. Understanding the vocabulary is an important start to our students comprehending the curriculum.

There are a few things as parents you can do to check on the vocabulary your student is learning in each class:

1. Ask them the vocabulary they are learning for the week.

2. Ask them what the words mean in that certain subject.

3. Possibly post the words (I’m sure high school students will not care for you hanging vocabulary words for Algebra I on the refrigerator, but it is worth a shot).

4. Just stress the importance of what a good vocabulary can do for them.

Do you realize that if we keep doing what we are doing in the area of vocabulary, all students’ vocabulary will improve. We have the tools, strategies and educators to bridge this gap. We can’t be afraid of the terms. Do you realize that 1st graders are hearing “Expository Text” in their classes?

Muchos de los estudiantes carecen del vocabulario para sobresalir en el curriculo del estado. Las evaluaciones revelan que muchos estudiantes tienen un lenguage muy pobre. Entender que las palabras usadas en el curriculo son importantes. Podria usted identificar en cual materia son usadas estas palabras:

Si puedes identificar la material en la que estas palabras se usan, puedes contar una historia para cada palabra y ilustrar (dibujar un dibujo) con cada una? En otras palabras, entiendes el contexto en el cual estas palabras se usan? Pueden las palabras tener mas de un significado si son usadas en dos diferentes clases, como “medida” o “conflicto”? Ciertas palabras tienen cierto significado referente alo que se quiere explicar. Los estudiantes necesitan entender la relacion del vocabulario con la material. Muchos estudiantes necesitan entender la aplicacion del vocabulario a el contenido para ser exitosos. El vocabulario siempre a sido importante. El entendimiento del vocabulario es un paso importante para que los estudiantes entiendan el curriculo.Estas son algunas de las cosas que los padres pueden revizar el vocabulario que tu estudiante esta aprendiendo en cada clase:

1. Preguntales el vocabulario que estan aprendiendo esa semana.

2. Preguntales que significado tienen las palabras en cierta materia.

3. Si es posible pega las palabras (Estoy seguro que los estudiantes de secundaria no les va a importar que las palabras de Algebra I esten pegadas al refrigerador, pero vale la pena intentar).

4. Simplemente recalca que tan importante es el buen vocabulario para ellos.

Te das cuenta que si seguimos haciendo lo que estamos haciendo en el area del vocabulario, todos los estudiantes mejoraran. Tenemos armas, estrategias y educadores para cruzar el espacio. No podemos tenerle miedo alos terminos. Te daz cuenta que los estudiantes de primer grado estan escuchando “Texto Declarativo” en sus clases?
