50 Years Ago

Dec. 27, 1962

At 10p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, San Saba's telephone system was converted to dial. Howard Harrison, publisher of the San Saba News and Star, pulled the main switch to convert all of the 1508 telephones in the system to dial operation.

Richland Springs Cemetery was invaded by vandals during the Christmas holidays, upsetting markers, tearing up wreaths and flowers and scattering them about the ground. Sheriff Barker stated Friday morning that he was working on the incident but had found no leads at that time.

The home of Mr. and Mrs. Bernie Hart at 1209 West Dry Street won first place in the yuletide decoration contest for residences. Little Hardware and gift Shop was the first place winner for business.

Mrs. Eddie Williams completed 40 years as District Clerk and will continue to serve the office as deputy district clerk.

At the Corral Drive-In Theatre - Walt Disney's "The Absent minded Professor" starring Fred MacMurray, Nancy Olson, Keenan Wynn and Tommy Kirk.

Dec. 30, 1943

Miss Lillie Edna Justis entertained members of the China Creek 4-H Club with a Christmas party at her home, December 17. After enjoying various games, refreshments were passed to about 40 guests. Old Santa arrived and presented each member with a lovely gift.

Last Tuesday night the people of the China Creek and Plainview communities honored Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Koon with a farewell party at their home. Games of "42" were played, after which coffee, hot chocolate, and cookies were served. They were presented with many lovely gifts including a large Bible from the Plainview Church. Mr. and Mrs. Koon are moving to East Texas and will be greatly missed by the community.

Miss Rebecca Grumbles, TCU student, was home for the Christmas holidays.

R.D. Cayce, who is in the Coast Guard at Miami, Fla., with the rank of SK 3/c, arrived here this week to visit with his sisters, Mesdames R.C. Felts and F.W. Farley. His home is at Ft. Worth.

100 Years Ago

Dec. 26, 1912

N.C. Walker, H.J. Hudson and Miss Carrie and Mary Sanderson and Fannie Kirkpatrick attended the wedding reception to Mr. and Mrs. Osborne at Lometa Wednesday evening of last week.

M.K. Hamner, the popular young dentist of Cherokee, was in San Saba doing some Christmas shopping Friday.

Mrs. D.W. Parisher passed thru town Wednesday, returning home near Cherokee, from a visit to her mother at Belton.

Miss Nolia Wise, a student in the School of Industrial Arts at Denton is spending the holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Wise at Richland Springs.

Miss Della Paxton, who is teaching at San Angelo, passed thru town Saturday on the way to spend the holiday vacation with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Paxton. Miss Jennie Brown accompanied her from here for a holiday visit at Cherokee.
