The Cherokee Indians have had a successful start to their 2011 season. They defeated the Sidney Eagles in their first game of the season 40-20. Ryan Breadner was named Player of the Game for his outstanding defense. The Indians welcomed the Stephenville Faith Knights in their Homecoming game Friday, September 2. E.J. Borchers led with 235 rushing yards, five rushing touchdowns, one interception and one kick-off return for a TD. Cham Fox and Trey Shannon also joined Borchers in kick-off returns for touchdowns. Fox had one interception. Stephen Auster-mann had one TD and led the defense in tackles in the first two weeks of play. Borchers was named Player of the Game for his outstanding offensive and special team play.
The Indians met up with a tough Gustine Tiger team this past Friday. Up 16-14 at the half, the Indians fell behind 16-30 in the 3
rd quarter. Late in the 3rd quarter, Borchers returned a kick-off return all the way back for a TD. In the 4th quarter, Borchers again ran it in to tie the score at 30. With 1:13 left in the game the Tigers scored. Down 30-36 with seconds to go in the game Borchers connected with Fox on a 50-yard pass that was ruled out of bounds resulting in a devastating loss for the Indians. The Indians will face another tough opponent this Friday when the Lometa Hornets come to town. Come out and support your Indians!
