San Saba Garden Club Yard of the Month
Thursday, June 16, 2011 • Posted June 16, 2011

The San Saba Garden Club Yard of the Month is the residence of Bob and Martha Leigh Whitten, 307 W. Commerce Street. The home, which is sometimes called the Murray House, was built in 1916 and along with the huge yard, covers an entire block in this quiet neighborhood in San Saba. Originally there was a grass tennis court on the east side of the yard and one can still see the cement where the mid-court net was placed. There is also an old well and cistern original to the property which is used today to water the grounds. Martha Leigh has planted inpatients in this shaded area of the yard around the cistern and well. In 2008, the couple had rock pathways and a patio built into the landscape and reworked the flower beds. Now they display an array of wonderful plants that grow well in San Saba's mostly dry climate. Martha Leigh credits Kynda Jordan as her landscape planner who has selected just the right foliage to make the yard so attractive.

The Garden Club commends all those who have worked so hard these past dry months in keeping their yards so green and pretty. "We believe in trees and grass instead of ash heaps and tin cans, flowers instead of weeds!"
