The Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees of San Saba ISD was held on January 12th at 7:30 p.m. in the Central Administration Office. The Board of Trustees were seated in a U shape instead of an L shape and balloons and 270 paper hands of thank you notes showed the atmosphere of a festive celebration for School Board Appreciation Month.
President Darrin Barker called the meeting to order followed by the invocation and everyone joined for the pledges to the American and Texas flags.
Elementary teacher Kim Robbins introduced Wyatt Deans, Daniel Rosales, Kassidy Ellis, Raley Kirk, and Lexie Hayes who read their appreciation notes to the Trustees. Hailey Osbourn gave a very large card to the Trustees from the Middle School. Nathania Cisneroz represented the high school with a verbal thank you.
Superintendent Leigh Ann Glaze gave information on the following:
a. The school is applying for two grants - a $1,000 grant, a $3,000 to $8,000 grant for Safety compliances.
b. Mr. Underwood, Ms. Stewart and Ms. Glaze have been discussing and reading about the CSCOPE Curriculum for all grades.
c. ESC XV Technology Projects includes wireless service and video conferences.
d. There will be a meeting Thursday Jan. 15th to discuss Optional Flexible Year Considerations.
e. The Cafeteria Audit went great - with a score of 100! SMI will be here Feb. 11th to go over recipes for nutrition and balance.
f. TASB advocacy information is available online.
g. Jan. 14th SSISD is hosting a Region meeting. Tony Guidroz contributed packets for those attending with information about San Saba County and some complimentary gifts. Other meetings on Jan. 20 and 21st and the Austin Conference on Jan. 25th.
h. On Jan. 21st Pam West will be here for a Board Training for School Finances at 6 p.m. and on Feb. 4th SSISD will host a Region Board Training at 6:30 p.m.
i. The Accountability Campus School Report Cards were mailed last Thursday.
j. There will be an early school release on Jan. 15 at noon for the Stock Show.
k. Technology repairs in the amount of $2,000 were made.
l. A small number of students are applying for GED’s, Home Schooling, or going to Mexico instead of completing their education and graduation. A Drop-Out Prevention Committee is being formed to give students important information regarding their education and future.
The Trustees approved the following agenda:
1. The minutes of the Regular and Executive Session minutes from December 11, 2008.
2. Amended 2008-2009 budget as needed.
3. Allowed and pay bills.
4. Financial report.
Elementary Principal Mr. Tabor reported 279 students attending at this time. They are involved in Benchmarks, Texas Primary Reading Inventory, awards for excellent citizenship, and Daily Planners. Mr. Tabor recognized the teachers for their hard work, organization, and implementation.
High School Principal Mr. Pannell reported 208 students with a 95% average attendance. He gave student recognition, Basketball pictures will be Jan. 21st, graduation packets are going to be given out; students are going to the Rotary monthly, One Act Play will have their first performance Feb. 5th, and Justice of the Peace Les Dawson and Police Chief Ray Riggs are tracking down students when they absent without a reason.
Middle School Principal Mr. Underwood reported 210 students with an average of 97.89 attendance.
It’s basketball time - in fact, playing tonight - Marcy Maxie just got into the meeting and reported that they lost by just 2 points. A Safety Walk on West Wallace has been implemented from the Sonic across to the school where a volunteer is providing traffic direction for students crossing the busy highway. They are involved in Benchmarks, placed in Band competition, and students of the week in December.
Athletic Director Johnson reported the Girls basketball ratings of 21-1 and 3-1 district. The Boys Varsity is 5-15 at this time. Bobby Pairett & Tyler McIntosh were on the front page of The San Saba News & Star last week for their accomplishment of being named All West Texas. The first meeting for Powerlifting will be Sat. Jan. 17th. There was some schedule shuffling so that some students could take part in the Stock Show and also make it to an out of town game.
President Barker gave the second reading for proposed changes to the 300 page policy and reported the School Board members training hours.
Ms. Glaze represented the school district in giving the board of trustee members some “goodies” in appreciation for their services which included a $20 concession stand certificate.
The trustees were informed that there could be some Sunday travel for One Act Play.
A fee for a deposit for schools using Mill Pond Park Track was enacted.
The next board meeting will be changed to Thursday, Feb. 12th at 6 p.m.
The Trustees approved to participate in REMS Safety Grant with ESC XV - Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools.
President Barker adjorned the meeting. After a short break the Board held an Executive Session.
During the Executive Session the Board unanimously approved to extend Superintendent Glaze's 3 year contract. They regretfully accepted the resignation of Athletic Director Johnson effective June 30th.
