Cherokee FFA celebrated National FFA Week recently. Grow, is this year’s theme, and it celebrates more than 80 years of FFA traditions while eagerly anticipating the organization’s future. More than half a million nationwide members participated in National FFA Week activities at local, state and national levels.
FFA members are the innovators and leaders of tomorrow.

The San Saba County Commissioners Court was held Monday, March 11th at 9:00 a.m. in the County Judge’s Chambers. Commissioner Rickey Lusty called the court to order and welcomed everyone. Commissioner Kenley Kroll gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags.
The following County Official and Departmental reports were approved subject to audit: County/District Clerk, County Treasurer, County Justice of the Peace, County Sheriff and Jail.

Well hello there people of San Saba! Patches here! It has been quite a time since I have used these old paws to type out a few words to you guys. How in the world have you guys been? I hope the New Year has started out in a grand fashion for everyone and winter hasn’t been too harsh for anyone.

I am writing the column this week from New Orleans. My daughter Suzanne and I drove here to visit Khalid, Callie and of course that precious grandson, Maddox. We have had a great visit seeing the sights and enjoying the rainy days and green landscapes, (not to mention the beautiful architecture and beignets).

A storm blew in Saturday night with lots of lightening and some wind. The heavy down pour of rain left anywhere from one and four tenths to one and three tenths. It came down hard and fast enough to have some run off putting some water in the tanks. The bad news is there was some frost Monday morning and too early to tell if it got some of the fruit that had started to bloom may have gotten the apricots, as the tree was in full bloom..

Praise God for the rain. Our gauge is broken, but it looks as if we had at least an inch of rain. That amount tallies with what our neighbors received. There wasn’t much runoff, but as someone put it, “You could hear the land sucking it up as fast as it fell.” Another few inches managed to find their way into my tank, so the deer and cows will have water to drink.

He is middle aged and diagnosed with cancer. He has been taking radiation and chemo but now is in the hospital hooked up to machines and may only have a short time here on earth. That man reminds me of something in the Bible.

The Warrior Brotherhood Veterans Motorcycle Club is holding a fundraiser April 6th beginning at 10:00 a.m. on the San Saba Courthouse Square to help raise money for four year old cancer patient, Kaelie.
Kaelie was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma cancer. The cancer is currently inoperable and she is going through chemo. Kaelie's family is struggling with mounting medical bills.

Anthony & Candace Munoz are proud to announce the birth of their twin daughters. Hallie Analyse Munoz & Hadley Brynn Munoz were born on February 12, 2013 in San Angelo, TX. Hallie weighed 5 lbs 5 oz and was 19 in long. Hadley weighed 4 lbs 15 oz and was 17 ½ in long.

The Texas Hill Country Dorper Sheep Association again will award two college scholarships this fall in memory of one of the state's pioneers in the Dorper sheep industry.
The scholarships, valued at $1,000 each, are open to any Texas resident. One will be awarded to a high school senior graduating this spring and the other to a college student who will be at least a junior in any Texas college or university this fall.

An electrical fire destroyed the mobile home of Travin and Jill Burrows on CR 204 in Richland Springs on Tuesday, March 5th. They are in need of housing, furniture and gift cards to purchase basic necessities. They hope to find housing in the RSISD area because their 7 yr. old daughter is in the GT program there.

Applications for emergency farm loans for damages and losses caused by drought, October 1, 2012 and continuing, are being accepted at the Farm Service Agency (FSA) office located in San Angelo, Paul S. Cline said today.
San Saba County is one of 207 counties in Texas recently designated by the Secretary of Agriculture as eligible for loans to cover part of actual production and/or physical losses resulting from damages caused by drought that occurred from October 1, 2012 and continuing.

A Public Information Statement from the National Weather Service, San Angelo, TX
The Dyess Doppler Radar, KDYS, will undergo a modernization to use new technology known as Dual Polarization. Installation will take up to two weeks and begins on Monday, March 18th.
This upgrade will cause the KDYS Radar to be down and unavailable for much of this two week duration. Receipts totaled 1493 head for the week. The market was active and demand good with stocker steers steady to $3.00 higher and heifers steady. The feeder steers and heifers all sold steady except for some really fat calves and yearlings that sold $2.00 to $5.00 lower. Tommie Sue Smith Wallace, 63, of San Saba, Texas, passed away Saturday, March 2, 2013 in Beeville,Texas. She was born February 26, 1950, in San Saba, Texas, the daughter of Thomas Smith and Mary Ann Smith. Tommie Sue spent her time enjoying her family and many hours as a seamstress.

Chavela Medellin Soto, age 63, passed away at Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth on February 26, 2013. Chavela was born to Pedro and Lucilla Munoz Medellin in Toledo, Ohio July 11, 1949. She married Manuel Soto Sr. of San Saba County in Fort Worth, Texas in 1974.
Chavela is survived by her parents, Eliseo and Lucilla Rodriguez; four sons, Jose (Joe) Rangel of Fort Worth, Manuel Soto, Jr.

Anna Marie Northington, 82, passed on to join her Lord & loved ones, January 19, 2013 following a long illness while living in Round Rock, TX. Her husband of 21 years, K.V. Northington, Jr, had passed on in 1999 while they were living in San Antonio, TX.
Anna Marie Roberts was born in San Saba, TX to Elizabeth & Bolivar Roberts on June 23, 1930, reared & educated there, and later made her home in San Angelo, TX for many years doing oil field accounting for Frank Pool & others.

SSHS One Act Play is working on their contest show, Cinderella Waltz by Don Nigro. The play is being produced through special arrangements with Samuel French, Inc. The group has travelled to festivals in Richland Springs and Waco Midway High School. The play will be presented for the public on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at 7 p.m.

The local chapter of The Daughters of the Republic of Texas hosted the I Love Texas Art and Poetry Contest during the month of February. The art contest was open to ages five through adult. Projects were required to relate to Texas or to the history of Texas. The poetry contest was open to grades 3 - 9 and to adults.

The San Saba Tennis Team played in the State 2A & Under Team Tournament on March 8-9 in the Round Rock-Leander-Georgetown area.
Teams in the State Tournament were East Bernard, Wall, Godley, Brownfield, Schulen-burg, Mason, San Saba, Brock, Ingram, Franklin, Kirbyville, Knippa, Wink, Reagan County, White Oak, and Forsan.
The Dillos played a tough team from Kirbyville in the first round.

The junior high boys track teams ran this past week at Goldthwaite. There was a lot of good competition and over 600 kids competing. The kids ran well, and all of them ran a better time than the previous meet. The final results are as follows:

I hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend. I’m sure many will be whining when we’re in school at the end of the week, knowing their friends in area schools have the full week off. I keep telling myself we got to be off Friday and we might be off a future day that others don’t have!

In addition to State Tennis, Regional Powerlifting, and he Mill Pond Classic Baseball tournament, the San Saba track teams competed this past weekend at the Bluebonnet Relays in Brownwood. The prelims and field events were held on Friday, with running finals held on Saturday. San Saba was well represented, and competed well in the meet.
