The San Saba County Commissioners Court was held on Monday, February 25th at 9:00 a.m. in the County Judge’s Chambers. County Judge, Byron Theodosis called the Court to order and welcomed everyone. County Commissioner, Rickey Lusty gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags.

The San Saba boys’ basketball team was represented very well this year in District 12 1A. Congratulations go to Kelan Verette for being voted the district Offensive MVP!!!!!!! Kelan averaged 24 points per game in district play and was an 80% FT shooter. We had two players earn First Team honors.

On February 19, the Armadillo Basketball team traveled to Hamilton to compete in our Bi-District Playoff game against Santo. Santo jumped out to a first quarter lead of 22-10 with the help of good three point shooting. In the second quarter the Dillos closed the gap to eight points outscoring Santo 15-11.

Richland Springs’ students continue to do well at major stock shows. Landon Burkhart won the lightweight hair sheep class, and Adrienne Benson placed second in the same class at the San Angelo Stock Show. There were 33 entries in the lightweight hair sheep class. Congrats to both Landon and Adrienne on the 1-2 finish.

Will wonders never cease, some rain fell around the Bend. Bonnie Millican reported that they received one-half inch, but 2/10 was all that fell on the west side of the river. Not a huge amount but it was moisture which is so badly needed. Some fruit trees are beginning to bloom as a result of all the warm weather.

We were blessed with a little rain Sunday night. Bowser had a tenth of an inch, Lakeview area received ½ inch. I know how important these rain reports are to our out of town readers. Yesterday was very windy, if it wasn’t battened down, it probably ended up on the neighbor’s property.

Last night was the night of Hollywood recognition, the STATUE night. I have to say, folks, I could only stay with it for bits and pieces and the snippets I watched did not impress me. Maybe it is my aging attitude but I could care less about who is wearing whom, how long it took for Katherine Zeta Jones to pick a dress or whether Michael Douglas had a say in her choice.

By the time this edition comes out we will be about through with February. All teachers are on a crash course for STAAR tests in April. The months seem to be flying by at an alarming rate. What is even more alarming is the lack of rain we have had on this end of the county.

I guess it was in grade school that I was first exposed to verb tenses. There we learned that a verb could be for things in the past, or things in the present, or something in the future. Thinking about that reminds me of something in the Bible. There are a lot of verses speaking about sin but there are a lot of verses speaking about forgiveness.

San Saba County Friends of Animals is committed to providing a safe, clean, well-run shelter for homeless animals in San Saba County. To help us reach that goal, we plan to visit several existing shelters so that we can learn what works well and what to avoid when we create our own facility.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced that USDA is adding Texas to a pilot program that enables current USDA borrowers to save money on housing costs by refinancing their mortgages with lower interest rates. USDA Housing Administrator Tammye Treviño made the announcement on behalf of Secretary Vilsack. “USDA’s expansion of this program will help more rural borrowers refinance their mortgages to reduce their monthly payments and ease their financial burdens,” Vilsack said.

Receipts totaled 830 head for the week. The market on the lighter weight stocker steers was steady to $3.00 lower and the stocker heifers going to grass or graze out wheat were steady. The bigger steers and heifers that were going to the feed yard sold $3.00 lower. The packer cows were $2.00 higher with the top cow at $90.00 and bulls were $1.00 higher with the top bull at $110.00.

David Buchberg passed away at his home on Saturday, February 23, 2013 in San Saba, Texas. David was known in San Saba for being a great seamstress. David did lots of alterations and sewing for the public. David was a machine mechanic before he moved to San Saba. David is preceded in death by his parents, Albert Buchberg and Samona Buchberg.

James B. Brumley, 88, passed away on February 13, 2013 in Hamilton, Texas. Graveside services were held on Monday, February 18, 2013 at San Saba Cemetery in San Saba with military honors and a Masonic service. James Brumley was born on April 19, 1924, in Graham, Texas, to Charles and Josie Brumley.

Bobbye Jo Parker Summers was born October 26, 1932 and went to be with our Lord February 19, 2013. Bobbye’s parents were Jesse James Parker and Minnie Davis Parker. On December 21, 1951, Bobbye married James Orville Summers and had one son, Timothy Worth Summers. Bobbye was preceded in death by her husband, James Orville Summers; their son, Timothy; her parents, Jesse and Minnie; sisters, Hazel Parker and Mary Crooks; one brother, Jesse James Parker Jr.

Lloyd Smith Jr. , “Sambo”, 74, of Bend, passed away on February 19, 2013 in Round Rock, Texas. Visitation was held at Heritage Funeral Home, Friday, February 22, 2013 from 5—7 p.m. Graveside services were held on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at Chappel Cemetery, near Bend TX, San Saba County. Lloyd was retired from theCity of Austin where he was a building inspector for many years.

San Saba High School is competing in the “Texas Public Schools Rock!” student video contest sponsored by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB). On Friday, the San Saba High School Power lifting team competed in the Strawn meet. The team increased in numbers and increased in weight totals from the Brady meet, thus showing great improvement. The San Saba Boys team finished 2nd out of 17 teams and there were several two and three A and four A teams at this meet.

The San Saba High School Tennis Team had a busy week last week in preparation for the 2A & Under Region V Tournament on March 1-2. On Tuesday, February 19, we took part of our varsity and JV Team to play Llano in team tennis. The Armadillos won the match 9 to 8.

Entries for the Lometa Diamondback Jubilee Rodeo Queen Contest will be accepted through March 10th. Contestants must be residents of Lampasas, Mills, or San Saba counties, from 14-18 years of age. Judging is on horsemanship skills, rodeo ticket sales and interview. A $500 scholarship will go to the winner, and a 1st runner-up prize will be presented a $100 gift certificate.
