The San Saba County Commissioners Court was held on Wednesday, January 30th in the County Judge’s Chambers at 9:00 a.m. County Judge Byron Theodosis called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone to the Court. Commissioner Rickey LusThere was a presentation by Scott Meador, Animal Control Officer for the City of San Saba and Kate Beckes, President of the San Saba County Friends of Animals, regarding a joint operation of an animal shelter and animal control with the City and the County.

Mattie Emma Johnson, a lifetime resident of San Saba County, recently celebrated her birthday at Pecan Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation. Born on January 14th, 1908, she turned 105 years old this year. Her family and friends gathered together on Saturday, January 12th for a Celebration of Life honoring Emma, celebrating with cake and punch.

U.S. Representative K. Michael Conaway (R-Texas) held a Town Hall Meeting Thursday, January 31st from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the San Saba County Courthouse. Approximatly 30 citizens attended the meeting which was open to members of the media and to the public. Rep. Conaway was accompanied by staff members Michael Horder and Evan Thomas. 40 Years Ago February 8th, 1973 Jane Browning Felts will present an Art Demonstration at the meeting of San Saba Art Association at 4p.m. Monday, February 12th, in LCRA Building and the public is invited. Miss Felts, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. H.V. Felts, is a 1958 graduate of San Saba High School; 1962 from Baylor University and received her Masters degree from A&I Kingsville. Super Bowl Sunday doesn’t mean so very much at our house since Harold isn’t a fan of sports, I am not a fan of grilled things and neither one of us seem to have any fans. Yep, our Super Bowl Sunday was pretty quiet and the only touchdown was when Patches jumped down from the couch and made a four point landing.

Happy February! It is hard to believe we are already in February. The school year seems to fly by once January is in the books. Many spring activities keep our students and teachers busy. Elm Grove is well represented in the many activities at Richland Springs School. Our Elm Grove community has strong ties with the school, our neighbors and friends are staunch supporters of our school children.

If you want some, you have to be vigilant and check the bushes every day. When the peppers turn red, birds gobble them up. I remember glancing out the court yard window one morning when I was heading off to my town job.

Well the little groundhog guy says spring is coming early, but we already beat him to it. I for one do not put much store in waking a little animal up and letting him predict my next six weeks weather. Our poor weathermen can’t do weather for a week, and they have tons of computer equipment.

A couple staying at a motel noticed a strong odor in their room. They spent the entire night in the room with the stink. The next day after the couple checked out, the motel workers found a dead body under the bed. It is amazing what people can ignore! Many in today’s world are unaware of the stink of sin.

It has been tagged as “Super Sunday”. Today the Super Bowl will be played in New Orleans between the San Francisco 49ers and the Baltimore Ravens. These are the two best teams the NFL has this year; and one of them will be crowned champions, while the other team will go home knowing they got so close but did not get the ring. There are a couple of thoughts about this that I would like to share with you.

I visited with him last night, but that may be the last time I ever see him alive. Last summer he developed a cough and went to the doctor, and was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. He is over 6 feet tall, young, strong and in good physical shape. He works with wood and has made a lot of crosses for different churches.

On Monday, January 28, 2013, the committee members for the San Saba County Relay for Life benefiting the American Cancer society met at the Commercial National Bank to make plans for this year's event which will be held on Friday, April 19, 2013 at Riesen Park. Walking Thru the Decades will be the theme with each team representing a different decade.

The San Saba County Appraisal District will be closed February 11th and 12th. They will be moving to the second floor of the Arrowhead Bank Building temporarily, due to the renovation of the Appraisal District building. The 2013 Business personal Property Renditions will be mailed this week and are due back to the office by April 15, 2013.

Receipts totaled 4231 head for the week. The market kept its aggressive tone from earlier in the week and the demand was strong. Stocker steers and heifers sold $5.00-$7.00 higher while feeder steers sold $5.00 higher feeder heifers sold $3.00 higher. Packer cows sold $2.00 higher with the top cow at $89.00 and packer bulls sold $1.00 higher with the top bull at $103.00.

Registration for the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service’s Texas Brigades summer camps program has begun. This year’s slate of seven camps includes a new one that departs from the traditional wildlife-only topics, according to coordinators. “Our newest addition is the Ranch Brigade,” said Dr. Dale Rollins, AgriLife Extension wildlife specialist at San Angelo and founder of the Texas Brigades.

Wandah Cordell Dean, 86, passed away on January 30, 2013, in San Saba, Texas. Visitation was held on February 1, 2013, from 1:00 – 2:00 P.M. at Heritage Funeral Home San Saba. The service followed at 2:00 P.M. Interment was at Cherokee Cemetery in Cherokee, Texas. Wandah Cordell Perry Dean was born July 26, 1926, first born of Ross and Mary Perry.

Joyce Vardeman passed away on January 21, 2013 from a long fight with Alzheimer’s. Visitation was held at Resthaven Funeral Home on Wednesday January 23, 2013 5-8 P.M. Funeral service was held Thursday January 24, 2013 10 a.m. at Resthaven’s Abbey Chapel. Burial followed at Resthaven Memorial Park. Joyce was born on January 28, 1928 in San Saba County, Texas to Raymond and Irva Pearce.

Ace Edmond Myrick (aka Eddie, Ed, Buffalo) was born in Corpus Christi, Texas to Ace Curtis Myrick and Janie Omega Williams Myrick on December 14, 1941. Ace was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Ann Haynes Myrick; son, Ryan Edmond Myrick; his parents; father-in-law Noel Haynes; and brothers-in-law Haywood Smith and Edward Appleton.

Carrol D. Turner, 71 years of age, passed away January 31, 2013. He was born October 17, 1941 to Dan and Mavis Brown Turner in San Saba County. Carrol married Barbara Gatliff and resided in Dallas, TX while raising a family and working in construction. After the passing of his wife Barbara, he married Brenda Brown in Oklahoma and lived out his retirement years in Lamesa, TX.

On Tuesday, Jan 29 we hosted Goldthwaite. The Dillos jumped out to an 11-8 lead after the 1st quarter. In the second quarter Goldthwaite outscored us 17-21 and took a 29-28 halftime lead. The Dillos came back in the third quarter and tied the game up 38-38. In the fourth quarter both teams had high scoring quarters but Goldthwaite outscored the Dillos 28-19 in the fourth quarter and won the game 66-57.

The JH Indians finished their basketball season this past weekend at the District Tournament in Eden. The Lady Indians lost to Lohn in the Consolation game by two points. The Indians were defeated by Menard in the 3rd place game. Thank you to all the parents and fans who travelled with us this season! The Lady Indians will finish their basketball season on Tuesday against Richland Springs.

The University of Texas of the Permian Basin has announced that Erin Wright is among the candidates receiving the Master's Degree in Special Education in December. Ms. Wright is the daughter of Terry & Peggy Wright of Odessa, and granddaughter of the late Charlie and Jerrie Startz of San Saba.

The San Saba Lady Dillos clinched a playoff spot with a big win over the Valley Mills Lady Eagles on Friday night. The Lady Dillos took an early 12-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. They went on to defeat Valley Mills by a score of 57-28.

The San Saba JV Boys finished 1-1 this past week. On Tuesday the young Dillos lost a close game to Goldthwaite by the score of 35-31. Scoring in that game: John Faught (3), Holt Oliver (8), John Welch (16), Josh Cazares (2), and Stone Sealy (2). On Friday our teams traveled to Valley Mills.

This month’s Educational Leadership focus deals with creativity. The topic has been a focus in many debates. Standard-based instruction and high stakes testing has been to blame for “stifling” the creative juices of our students. I beg to differ. The San Saba Tennis Team played in the Copperas Cove Tournament on January 31. Teams at the tournament were Brownwood, Killeen Ellison, Liberty Hill, San Saba, Waco High, Llano, China Springs, Killeen Shoemaker, Lampasas, Georgetown, Harker Heights, and Copperas Cove. Joannah Crosby and Joely Haverland won all 5 of their matches to win the girls doubles championship.

The GED Test will be given at Gatesville High School February 12th and 13th. Individuals wishing to take the test must complete registration between 5 and 7p.m. on February 6th. Be prepared to spend 30 minutes to one hour when registering. You will need to bring a current state or federal photo ID, Social Security Card, and $80 fee for the test.

The first round of STAAR testing begins April 1st. In just 35 school days, students in grades 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 will begin testing. Students in grades 4, 7, 9, 10, and 11 will take the writing tests. Students in grades 5 and 8 will take the Reading and Math tests.

San Saba ISD has once again been chosen for a very big honor. For the second time, San Saba High School Students will be presenting their technology skills to the Texas Legislature. SSISD strives to educate well rounded students who are ready for the workforce.
