At the end of January, Carolyn McDowell, San Saba County’s Family and Consumer Science Agent with the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension program will retire. She has served as our agent twice. She was a new agent when she came to San Saba as Carolyn Stackhoff in 1975. She took a break to follow other pursuits and then returned to the Extension Office in 1996. U.S. Representative K. Michael Conaway (R-Texas) will hold a Town Hall Meeting in San Saba on the 3rd Floor of the San Saba County Courthouse on Thursday, January 31st, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. The Town Hall Meeting is open to members of the media and the public.

The play, written by Melanie Marnich, reveals the dramatic scandals and societal shifts following the newly victorious USA after World War I. The 1920’s were a time of change, especially for women.

The Board of Trustees of San Saba ISD held a Regular Meeting on Monday, January 14th at 7:15 p.m. in the Central Administration office. President, Kim Kirk called the meeting to order and established a quorum was present, which was followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags.

The Elm Grove Community Meeting was held last Saturday night. There were not many in attendance. I encourage everyone to come to the meetings, your participation is so important to keeping this historic building a “living and breathing” part of the community. The old school house is such a loved landmark in our community.

It is hard to believe that the first month of the new year is just about gone. Where did all the days go? Last week Jane Clark and some other members of her family were to go to Granger Saturday to attend the RFD TV polka party and haven’t been heard from since.

I have to say that we have been having some nice weather. The mornings are definitely a little nippy, but by mid afternoon the weather is just beautiful. All the runners and athletes must be enjoying their outdoor workouts. I have not been enjoying any outdoor workouts. (I don’t consider walks with Glen workouts.) I think the mountain cedar has attacked me.

Maybe you inherited it or maybe you bought it, but there are many of them around the countryside. Most are run down and in need of a lot of fixing up. Usually when the new owners take possession they start cleaning up. Making the place lovable and beautiful takes a lot of hard work and time.

When I was in the hospital and had surgery last August, David Nix, a volunteer with a group at Scott & White Hospital came by and explained to me what was going to be happening, what to expect after the surgery, the pain, and how important it was to do the therapy needed to get going again.

25 Years Ago January 28, 1988 A tank truck from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department placed 2500 Rainbow Trout in the Lake at Mill Pond for the fishing enjoyment of local residents. An additional 2500 of the species are expected to arrive in February. The sale of animals placing in the top 75% of their class at the San Saba County Livestock Show last Friday and Saturday, and purchased by businesses within the county, netted $65, 114.15 for youth who exhibited winning livestock.

Region 7 Zoonosis Control has provided their annual review of rabies cases for 2012. This is the region where San Saba County resides. They investigated a total of 458 positive and non-negative animal rabies cases in 2012. This year marked the second highest number of laboratory confirmed animal rabies cases (308) in Central Texas behind 2011’s total of 405 cases. January 26th is Mirabeau B. Lamar Day, a day to salute the Father of Education in Texas. On that date in 1839, the Republic of Texas Congress passed The Education Act, setting aside land for public schools.It was President Mirabeau B. Lamar, second President of the Republic of Texas from 1838-1841, who successfully argued the importance of public education, and proposed the first actions that laid the foundation for a public school system in Texas.

On January 22, the National Trust for Historic Preservation will announce a month-long campaign to celebrate Texas courthouses. Beginning in February, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Texas Historical Commission, and Preservation Texas invite the public to show their love for these iconic places through online photo and story sharing.

Approval of the suggested revisions and additions to the Animal Control City Ordinance was given during the City Council meeting held Monday January 14th. The wording that applies to the annual city registration requirement of pets was changed to reflect a 12 month span. Previously it stated that all registrations are due to be renewed every January.

I have finished a research on the words,( devil and devils), and was greatly surprised to find the word devil does not appear in the Old Testament of the King James Bible even one time, and the word, devils, appear only four times therein. Then I was further surprised to find the plural of (devils), appears 48 times in the New Testament and the single word, devil, appears 58 times..

The market started strong this week and continued its stronger tone on Thursday with the stocker steers selling $5.00-$10.00 higher with several groups of 4 weights bringing $1.90 up to $2.08 and had several drafts of 5 weights sell from $1.75 up to $1.83 and some 6 weights bringing up to $1.65.

The San Saba JV boys basketball defeated the DeLeon Bearcats this past Friday night, moving to 3-0 in district play. The Tuesday night JV games against Valley Mills were cancelled due to weather issues. Against the Bearcats, the boys defensive pressure allowed the Dillos to jump out to an early 10-1 lead.

The JH basketball teams traveled to Lohn last Monday to play the Eagles. The Lady Indians fell short of a victory, but the Indians won 44-17, led by Uriel Arredon-do’s personal best 27 points. The varsity teams played Eden on Tuesday. The Lady Indians were victorious, playing possibly their best game of the season.

Up to this point, we have played 4 district games. On Jan. 8 we hosted Meridian for our district opener. We came from behind in the fourth quarter and eked out a win beating Meridian 35-33. On Jan. 11 we traveled to Goldthwaite. Their man to man pressure gave us some trouble accompanied with shooting only 19% from the field and Goldthwaite won 35-51.

On Thursday January 17th, the San Saba High School Power Lifting team competed in the Lampasas meet. This was our first meet of the year and we were very proud of the way our lifters competed. Our boy’s team finished fourth out of thirteen teams and our girl’s team finished fifth out of nine teams (we only had three girls lifting).

5th and 8th Grade Information Student Success Initiative Information Standards for the STAAR Assessment will be released by Friday, January 25th. Students and parents have been given the raw score information for the STAAR Assessments given in the spring of 2012. The legislative session is underway. I know for most segments of our community the legislative session is important and many patrons follow the happenings of the session. For those of us in working in public schools, we follow the happenings of the legislature on a daily basis.
