The 2012 Central Regional Pecan Show was held December 12th in Kerrville.
There were a total of 180 entries from 14 different counties. San Saba County took 26 entries, and brought home 15 ribbons.

AUSTIN – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) will increase DWI patrols from December 21 – January 1, which includes both the Christmas and New Year holidays. DPS troopers will focus DWI patrols in high-risk locations at times when alcohol-related crashes are most frequent. The enhanced patrols that target intoxicated drivers are funded through a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation.

SSCFOA will hold its first members’ meeting on Monday, January 7, 2013. The meeting will take place in the conference room at 601 West Wallace (Clay Nettleship’s office), beginning at 6:00 p.m.

On Saturday, January 5th 2013, the Freemasons of San Saba Lodge No. 612 will hold their monthly stated meeting. Supper will be served at 6:30 p.m. and all Masons are asked to provide a complimentary covered side dish, bread, salad or dessert. The main course will be a chicken strip supper procided by Past Master Max B.

The San Saba Scottish Rite Club conducted its last quarterly meeting on Monday, December 10th. New officers elected for the 2013 year were: president- John D. Rhoades, 32º, 1st Vice President-Bobby G. King 32º, and 2nd Vice President-Jan K. Huffstetler, 32º, Secretary-Treasurer Ross J. Cox, Sr. 33º, and Outer Guard-Earnest Roy Jones, 32º.
Recently the San Saba Scottish Rite Club provided a seven week (Oct-Dec.) educational course in Goldthwaite for Scottish Rite Freemasons.

SuperTracker Helps People Track and Obtain Weight Loss Goals
Self-monitoring allows people to become more aware of their current habits, poor or good alike (and how they may have changed over time). Providing people with tools to identify areas for improvement is essential to curtail the obesity epidemic that is affecting the nation.

This is the last column for the year. The next one will have to wait until 2013. There is a very early deadline, so I’m getting started the day after I finished the last one. That means news is a little short.

Several of the directors of the chamber were out and about Tuesday evening judging Christmas lights and decorations on homes and businesses. The first thing on the list was to go park at Mill Pond Park, change the radio dial to 88.7 and listen to the beautiful music and watch the fabulous Christmas lights.

Tuesday is Christmas day. For many it is the time that the world has set aside to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Jesus was born into our world and lived a perfect life. He died for the sins of mankind on a cross some thirty-three years later. We are still talking about Him after almost 2,000 years.

The weather outside is frightful and should be even worse Thursday night and maybe just maybe some rain on Christmas day. Maybe by the time you read
this Santa Claus will have brought rain for everyone in San Saba County and elsewhere in the state.
Just hope everyone has a safe and happy new year and doesn’t celebrate too much.
There is really no news to report other than LaNell Daniels did have her surgery Wednesday and everything seems to be ok with her.

Fredericksburg, Texas––The National Museum of the Pacific War has opened its first temporary exhibit in the George H.W. Bush Gallery displaying award-winning ship models of Dave McVey, as well as some of the museum’s own collection that has not previously been seen.
McVey’s models have won eight blue ribbons at the State Fair of Texas.

Dillon Brister of Bend won first place in the Light Weight Division Hair Sheep with his Dorper Lamb in the Lometa Stock Show Dec. 15th. This is Dillon's first year to be in 4H and his first year to show. He is the son of Michael & Gennifer Brister of Bend.

State Representative-Elect J.D. Sheffield has appointed a number of individuals with District 59 ties to positions in his office. Amanda Tollett, Glenn Jeffers, Gary Kafer, Brynnan Whaley, and Andrew Johnson have been named to district and Capitol posts.
Sheffield has appointed Stephenville native and former city councilmember Andrew Johnson as his Chief of Staff.

The Texas unemployment rate fell to 6.2 percent in November, down from 6.6 percent in October and 7.3 percent at the start of 2012. The unemployment rate in Texas remains well below the national rate of 7.7 percent. Texas employers added 22,100 total nonfarm jobs in November for a total of 278,800 jobs added over the year.

At 10p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, San Saba's telephone system was converted to dial. Howard Harrison, publisher of the San Saba News and Star, pulled the main switch to convert all of the 1508 telephones in the system to dial operation.
Richland Springs Cemetery was invaded by vandals during the Christmas holidays, upsetting markers, tearing up wreaths and flowers and scattering them about the ground.

Receipts totaled 1169 head for the week. Demand was good with the stocker steers selling steady to $2.00 higher and the stocker heifers selling $3.00 higher with one set of 8 choice Angus heifers weighing 435 pounds bringing $166.00. The feeder steers and heifers sold steady to $2.00 higher. Packer cows and bulls sold steady with a bull at $100.00 weighing 2225 pounds.

Eureta (Reta) Whitley, 83, of San Saba passed away on Tuesday, December 18, 2012, in Brownwood, Texas. Visitation was held on Friday, December 21, 2012 from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. at Heritage Funeral Home in San Saba. Services were held on Saturday, December 22, 2012, at 1:00 P.M. at Heritage Funeral Home San Saba.

The Dilloettes would like to extend a very sincere “Thank-You” to all who have supported them throughout the school year. Scholarship money has been raised with the help of San Saba ISD Administration, Sonic, Everett’s Furniture & Emporium, and most of all, the parents and citizens of San Saba. The Dilloettes recently raffled a flat screen television.

The San Saba County 4-H Food Challenge Team placed 3rd at the District Contest in Coleman on November 29th. The kids had a great time and learned about MyPlate, nutrients, unit price, food safety and garnishing. Congratulations to them for a job well done.

It’s Christmas break! I think I’m just as excited as the kids! Our teachers and staff members work so hard and deserve a break. I hope you all enjoy the time you have with your loved ones.
In light of recent events, it’s made me reflect on my choices as an educator and how I would handle difficult situations.

Angelo State’s Haylee Oliver was named the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her effort against Texas A&M-International.
Oliver recorded her fourth consecutive double-double of the season in a 80-66 win over Texas A&M-International. The sophomore led all scorers with 22 points and hit four 3-pointers. All 10 rebounds for Oliver came on the defensive end.
