What is Lactose? It is a type of sugar found in milk and milk products. Some people call it milk sugar. Lactose gives milk its pleasant, sweet taste. However some people cannot digest lactose and may get sick after eating foods containing lactose. Why do I get sick? The body needs a substance, known as lactase, to break down lactose.

Most of you know I grew up in Tennessee. I think Tennessee is a great state (Texas is too)! A lot of my kin folk on my Mom's side live up north...Maryland and Pennsylvania. We received a little snow in Tennessee, but not very much. So you can imagine what it was like for a child to go up north in the winter time. One trip we took was to my grandfather's funeral when I was seven years old.

By Mrs. J.P. Cummings, We write this final column as a tribute to our grandmother, Minnie Irene Mitchel Cummings
Irene was born in Borger, Texas on November 17, 1922, the youngest of seven children. Growing up, Irene and her family lived in many places throughout Texas. She told us stories of traveling by wagon to places far away where her family could find work. As a young girl, she remembered working in the fields alongside her brothers and sisters, picking cotton under the hot Texas sun.Irene and her brothers and sisters were all talented musicians.

This summer was hot and dry in our area and every time I went through the pasture where the horses were, they came running. I could not get them to quit following me no matter where I went. They were not poor, but they were not fat either, and usually I have a little horse feed in my pickup so I can check up on them.

Reading Recommendations: River of Contrasts, The Texas Colorado, Margie CrispWriter and artist Margie Crisp has traveled the length of Texas' Colorado River, which rises in Dawson County, south of Lubbock, and flows 860 miles southeast across the state to its mouth on the Gulf of Mexico at Matagorda Bay. Echoing the truth of Heraclitus' ancient dictum, the river's character changes dramatically from its headwaters on the high plains to its meandering presence on the coastal prairie.

Well as everyone now knows the weather man was way off on his predicting that we would receive a good amount of rain, we did receive lots of lightening and thunder and only 2/10 inch of rain Saturday. Have to admit that some is better than none, but more was needed..The deer have been coming in and standing on their hind legs and eating the pecans off the lower limbs of the pecan trees.

Lots of crashing and noise around us last night, but not a drop of rain was felt. The Brady area had about four inches, and it looked as if Llano was getting a good rain. I sat out on the front porch with my son-in-law Mark in the cool of the evening, but once again we have been bypassed by the contrary winds and rains. We woke up this morning to fog in the bottom.

News from San Saba ISD Superintendent, Leigh Ann Glaze
Parent involvement is the key to a successful school and to the success of our students. Most of us probably operate from the notion that if the school calls it is a bad thing. I can remember my parents telling me, “I better not get a call from school,” or “ If you get in trouble at school, you are going to get it double when you get home.” Hopefully, this is no longer the case and when you get a call from someone at school; hopefully, you are getting a good call.
