The San Saba County Commissioners Court held a Special Called Meeting on Friday, September 14th at 9:00 a.m. in the San Saba County Judge’s Chambers. County Judge, Byron Theodosis called the meeting to order. Commissioner Rickey Lusty gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags.The Court took action on the following items:1.

On Monday, September 10th, Bobby Joe Verette, 52, of San Saba County, died of a gunshot wound.According to San Saba County Sheriff, Allen Brown, the Sheriff's Office received a 911 call at approximately 2:30 - 3:00 p.m. from a female stating a man had been shot. San Saba EMS and Sheriff's deputies responded to the scene at FM 2032 and C.R.

Chris Stevens was born in Grass Valley California on April 18, 1960 and died on September 11, 2012 in service for his country. He was not the only one as there were three other staff members killed. He was the United States of America's Ambassador to Libya. His job was to be a representative for his home country and, as most ambassadors, he lived in a foreign land.

A lot of noise was coming from the hilltop behind Tim but all was quiet at the edge of the lake. In the years past, while birding along The Ditch, I noticed that the monarchs were flocking to the white flower heads on all of the frostweed plants, busily probing the flowers for nectar. Monarch butterflies follow the Colorado, San Saba and other Texas rivers as they migrate to their wintering grounds in the highlands of northern Mexico.

The rain did come down starting Thursday, Friday and Sunday morning leaving over 2" of welcome and much needed rain. The Bend Community meeting went off as scheduled and the group planned the up coming fund raiser on October 6. There will be games for the children again this year so bring out the youngsters let them play carnival games and enjoy a fish supper.

There is a lightening of spirits and sighs of relief as the sun breaks through after hours of refreshing rain. I woke several times Saturday evening just to enjoy the sound of the rain through my open window. A cool breeze through that same open window caused me to reach for a light blanket.

Chances are, if you receive Social Security benefits, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), or any federal payment, you receive it electronically. More than 90 percent of people getting monthly Social Security benefits already receive electronic payments. If you don’t yet, that’s about to change.There is a U.S. Department of Treasury rule that does away with paper checks for most federal benefit and non-tax payments by March 1, 2013.

The Heart of Texas Country Music Association sponsored a trip to Nashville last month for 104 area country music fans. The Board of Directors of Operation Orphans, Inc. has selected four dates for doe hunts during the forthcoming whitetail season. They are the following Saturdays: October 27th, November 17th, December 1st and January 12, 2013. Earl Doyle Gatliff, 92, a life time resident of San Saba, Texas passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2012. He was born February 20, 1920 to Effie May (Jackson) Gatliff and George Henry Gatliff. Reba "June" McPherson went to be with the Lord on September 15, 2012 at Hendricks Medical Center in Abilene. She was born on December 26, 1934 in Valliant, Oklahoma to Lloyd and Opal Scott Brodie. Christabel Cisneroz was nominated as an outstanding graduate student at the annual College of Graduate Awards Banquet at Angelo State University. Christabel, a 2007 San Saba High School graduate, received her Bachelors of Interdisciplinary studies with a focus in education in 2011 and will complete her Master of Higher Education with a focus in student and leadership this December 2012.

The SSHS Student Council wishes to congratulate Kelli Barker on winning the $500 gift card they raffled off this week. They also wish to thank each person who purchased a ticket. Congratulations to the Middle School Dillos on their victory this past Thursday over Ballin-ger.Thank God for the rain this past week, and Armadillo football appreciates all of those that supported the Dillos in the rain both Thursday and Friday. The varsity Armadillos suffered our first loss this season, and look forward to putting it behind us and getting ready for a good Hamilton team this week.

The Ballinger Bearcats defeated the San Saba Armadillos 39-7 last Friday night at Bearcat Stadium in Ballinger. It was a rough night for San Saba on both sides of the ball. Starting quarterback Kelan Verette was relegated to playing defense only and running back/linebacker /punter Russell Lowe hurt a leg late in the first half.

The Cherokee Indians were game competitors in last Friday nights’ intracounty contest against the back-to-back State Champion Richland Springs Coyotes, but the odds weren’t in their favor. The Coyotes won the coin flip and put all their money on chance,... Chance Bush, that is. The skies over Coyote Field were gray and cloudy last Thursday night but no rain was forthcoming. The San Saba 4-H Awards Banquet was held September 11, 6 p.m. at the Civic Center. The banquet began with Mekalia Castro leading the 100 people attending in the Pledge of Allegiance. Kendall Johnson led the 4-H Motto and Pledge and Melanie Hedley gave a short prayer. Analyn Bohensky sang the National Anthem.

On Wednesday, September 12 San Saba High School Cross Country Team competed in the Hico Invitational Cross Country Meet. The Boy’s team placed 9th out of 13 teams and was once again led by Hector Paez with a strong 9th place finish out of 110 runners. Vicente Vega and Daniel Garcia finished 29 and 45th respectively with Jose Robles and DJ Martin rounding out the boys team.

We came out the first half and dominated both offensively and defensively. Our offense moved the ball well and scored two touchdowns. Both touchdowns were scored by Emiliano Rocha. Our defense pretty well shut down their offense. Here is the problem though. Football games have two halves. The opposite happened in the second half.

The Middle school football team opened the season with a great victory over the Ballinger Bearcats 12-6. The Dillos played a hard fought game in rainy muddy conditions last Thursday even-ing. The Dillos held the Bearcats to only one score. The Bearcats had a hard time with the aggressive Dillo Defense.

The Parent Academy will be on two different nights in October to help accommodate parents that have students on an elementary campus and secondary campus. Currently, campuses are working on a schedule for these evenings.
