The Veterans of the Wiley B. Murray Post No. 27 will meet Thursday, September 13th at the Legion Hall in San Saba for their stated meeting. The building will be opened at 5:30p.m. for fellowship and refreshments. At 6:30p.m. a meal of barbeque brisket and chicken will be served. The San Saba Scottish Rite Club will hold its quarterly stated meeting on Monday, September 10th at the Lodge hall in San Saba. A meal of ham will be provided by Past President Benton W. Miller, 32°. The August sun had but a few hours to remain before giving way to a brand new month as Harold and I pulled into the Wedding Oak Winery. The winery was hosting a special event featuring music by The Rusty Brothers, Daniel, Steven and Andrew McWilliams. I was first introduced to their music at Pecan Jam last year and like mashed potatoes in a box, was an instant fan.

There are times in our lives when we are in a hurry to get something done and over with. And yet there are things that cause delay along the way.Recently I went to the hospital and got there on a Friday evening. They do not do testing until Monday so I am in the hospital two days before I can find the problem that is plaguing my body.

I went to the back pasture checking on some cows and while driving I noticed something strange in the distance. There standing all alone in a remote place was a small tree with lots of fruit on it. I did not recognize it at first, but as I approached, I was amazed.There stood a small persimmon tree full of fruit.

Fredericksburg- Hours prior to an injunction hearing on August 27 in Travis County, LCRA attorneys notified Central Texas Electric Cooperative (CTEC) personnel that LCRA was dropping its pursuit of a temporary injunction. CTEC, along with six other utilities, made a bold move on behalf of its members by notifying LCRA on August 13 that it was terminating an exclusive wholesale power agreement that prevented CTEC from purchasing power on the open market.

Receipts totaled 5361 head for the week with the market higher on all classes of cattle. Stocker steers and heifers were $5.00 higher with the 300-400 pound steers $20.00 higher and the same weight heifers $15.00 higher. The bigger feeder steers were $2.00 higher and heifers were $3.00 higher. Packer cows were $3.00 higher and packer bulls were $2.00 higher.

The Academic Booster Club of San Saba High School got off to a strong start their first year. A small group of parents were recruited to brainstorm needs, goals and activities for the group. The membership was open to interested businesses, families and individuals. The monies raised the first year were used to support the school, teachers and students in “Encouraging Academic Excellence”.

Thanks to everyone who came out Friday night to watch the Armadillo home opener. The Armadillos beat Tolar 24-6 to start the season in front of a great crowd. (see Tim Gates article). Kolton Ellis has been named this week’s “Frank’s Trophy Shop Player of the Week.” Kolton rushed for 1 TD and 49yds.On defense Kolton had 11 tackles, 2 deflected passes, 6 QB pressures and 1 pass break-up, in San Saba’s 24-6 win last week against Tolar.

This year we have an 8 period day that allows for more elective classes, plus added math tutorials. The school day starts at 8:00 and ends at 3:36. On Thursday we traveled to Hood County and played the Tolar JV Rattlers. We were very proud of the effort of our young men. The kids played very hard the entire game. As a result, we came home with a 40 to 26 victory.We did something that I have never seen in all of my years in football.

On a humid evening with no wind at all, the San Saba Armadillos outlasted the Tolar Rattlers 24-6. San Saba used two touchdowns late in the final period to put away a close game.The Dillos won the toss and deferred to the second half. Rodney Ortiz teed the ball and kicked it inside the 5 yard line where the Rattlers brought it out to the 30.

On July 1, 2012, new federal nutrition standards took effect and meals served through the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program must now meet these science-based requirements.
