The San Saba ISD Board of Trustees held a Special Meeting on August 22nd at 12:00 p.m. in the Central Administrative Office. President, Kim Kirk called the meeting to order followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags. President Kirk established a Quorum present with Trustee Michael Deans absent.

Well another summer has come to an end and the school year has begun. Early evenings to bed and even earlier mornings for sleepy headed children who only a few days ago thought homework perhaps meant making sure their bedrooms were straightened. Parents normally enjoy the start of school, whether they work or stay at home, because it provides structure, sports and an ease of schedule.

Last week I was mowing and cutting down some vines that had grown up in our trees. I do not know what kind of vines they were but they had grown way up in the trees and were choking them. Some of the vines were skinny and had lots of stickers while others were big and had grown up the trees looking like a giant snake.

We are hearing about rain all around us. During the last week we have only received about 1/2 inch here in Richland. My rain spotter out at Elm Grove reports 2.6 for the month out there. There was a lot of thunder and lightning last night west of Elm Grove and this morning they received 1.7 inches.

Winter and spring get all the hype; winter for its gulls, waterfowl, and swarms of songbirds flocking to backyard feeding stations, and spring for its array of colorful, hormone driven songsters that constitute the heart of migratory action.

The rains have been all around the Bend area, but all that happens here is thunder and lightening. A good opportunity for rain was missed Sunday night, but there was lots of lightening and thunder and little else just five one-hundreds inch of rain.School has started and kids will be riding the bus or walking to school so just be careful and watch out for them and be prepared to stop for school buses stopping to either pick up or let kids off.Warren Spivey has written an autobiography and me ...

Could you hear all the moans and groans on Monday? There was no national tragedy, only the first day of school for our kids. Although in fairness to the kids, they don’t mind coming back that first week or two of school. They look forward to getting together with their friends and swapping summer tales.

6 whole doves (preferably plucked) 6 slices bacon 1 T. butter or margarine 1/4 C. lemon juice 1/2 C. hot water 1/3 C. mushrooms-chopped 1/2 C. Onion – chopped Toast or Rice & Gravy Bacon wrap each bird, securing with skewers or toothpick. Place wrapped Doves in shallow, buttered baking dish or pan.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) will increase DWI patrols from August 19 – September 5, which includes the Labor Day holiday weekend. DPS troopers will focus DWI patrols in high-risk locations at times when alcohol-related crashes are most frequent. The enhanced patrols that target impaired drivers are funded through a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation.

Electronic books have been downloaded and read on e-readers, tablets and cellphones for several years. So it’s natural that eBook libraries would follow. Rylander Library is excited that it NOW offers this service to patrons of the library. Why do people like eBooks? There are several reasons. The San Saba Dairy Queen is among the first in a new wave of locations in the State to install new equipment to produce Orange Julius beverage products at Dairy Queen; thus including a product that, for a long time, was available only in freestanding Orange Julius facilities.Reintroduction to the 86-year old formula product is ongoing throughout area DQs owned by The Richeson Group.

Last Friday was a special day at the home. We had “Glamour Shots” and it was so much fun for the residents. They got to get all dressed up and have their pictures made. The ladies had their makeup and hair done for them and then were adorned with hats, boas and jewelry of their choices.

Receipts totaled 1670 head for the week. Demand was good and the market active with the stocker steers and heifers selling on a steady market along with the feeder steers and heifers selling steady as compared to last week. The real light weight steers and heifers sold $2.00 - $4.00 higher.

Thanks to everyone who went to Comanche this past Thursday to support the Armadillo football teams. It was our last scrimmage and we witnessed tremendous improvement. We were real proud of all the players. We were able to get 88 plays with our JV and 108 plays plus a live quarter with our Varsity.

The San Saba High School Golden Armadillo Band, under the direction of Brian Sours, completed a collective three weeks of summer camp this past week. Summer camp started the last week in July and wrapped up with 3 weeks of full band on August 17. This year’s summer camp was by far the most productive and in-depth in the band’s history!The kids had positive attitudes, high excitement, and an eagerness to learn that made each day of camp productive.

The 2012-2013 school year at Richland Springs began last Monday. Thanks to the teachers and staff and students, we had a great first week of school. Sandra Baskin 2012 Ladies Club Champion! This past weekend the San Saba River Golf Course held the annual Club Championship Tournament. It was such a fun event. Sandra has been the Club Champion several years and is an outstanding lady golfer. Flossie Woodward did give her a run for her money by starting the second day play with two birdies.

The 3rd and 4th grade Little Dillos used runs of 90 yards by Ryan Mathis and 45 yards by Logan Glover, in addition to a 60 yard touchdown strike from Risien Shahan to Logan Glover to win 18 – 0 versus the Llano Yellowjackets this past Saturday at Mustang Stadium in Marble Falls in the Hill Country Youth Football League!

San Saba County 4-H is teaming-up with the Stripes store for a fundraiser. Customers who enter the Stripes Store at 1306 W. Wallace will be given the opportunity to purchase a mobile for $1.00 along with their other purchases. Almost all of the mobile money will go to support the San Saba County 4-H program.

San Saba ISD celebrated the return of Armadillos on Monday, August 27! It was a joy to see the 731 smiling faces return to school after a long summer break. The students returned to 18 new staff members, a new science lab, renovated classrooms, changed buildings for some especially at SSES and returned to teachers who were anxious to have them back for the start of another GREAT year at SSISD!Each year schools across the state face many changes at the beginning of school year.

It is time to kickoff the 2012 season. Friday night sees the Tolar Rattlers coming to Rogan Field for the first meeting between the two schools. The Armadillos have 15 returning lettermen and 16 seniors on the 2012 squad.Taking over at quarterback is junior Kelan Verette. Last season, Verette was 2-7 passing for 52 yards and 1 TD as the backup for Ryan Pannell.
