The San Saba County Commissioners Court was held on Monday, August 20th, at 3:00 p.m. in the County Judge’s Chambers. County Judge Byron Theodosis called the Court to order and welcomed everyone. On Friday, August 17, San Saba ISD officially welcomed new staff members to the school district. The new staff members met for new teacher orientation including technology training from the Tech Team and to review other SSISD specific curriculum components. Teachers reviewed the use of the District’s CSCOPE curriculum, the use of the Eduphoria Data System Tool and the State’sonline technology tool - Project Share.

This week while working on a new pollinator garden in Lady Bird Johnson Park in Fredericks-burg, volunteers saw a small yellow bird flying between two groves of trees. That no black was evident in the plumage ruled out a Lesser Goldfinch, and made a closer look necessary to identify the species.

All of the rain was east of the Bend, reports of two tenths were reported around the Bend and Lampasas received one inch and four tenths and in some places south of Lampasas over 2 inches. Those people have to be doing something right to have received all that rain.

I brought rain to Canada when I went up on the 31st and I brought it back with me on the 17th! I have to say it was a rough day of travel. Everywhere I stopped it was raining and planes were delayed. I finally arrived in Austin around midnight.

The descendants of John Allen and Dennie Lee Lusty Crain held their annual family reunion the weekend of August 4, 2012. One day of visiting and reminiscing was not enough for this family—they needed three (3) days to “catch up.” The first gathering began Friday, August 3, with a hamburger & hot dog supper at the home of Franklin & Sandra Crain in Cherokee, TX.

At a hearing held on July 24, Central Texas Electric Cooperative (CTEC), along with six electric customers of LCRA, agreed to an expedited court hearing beginning August 27 in Austin. LCRA is asking the court to stop the customers from ending their wholesale power agreements. CTEC’s change of venue request to bring the case to Gillespie County will be among the first things likely to be considered by the Judge.

At the urging of the 82nd Texas Legislature, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has developed a secure on-line prescription monitoring program, called Prescription Access in Texas (PAT), which provides controlled substance prescription dispensing history to authorized healthcare and law enforcement professionals. DPS officially launched PAT in June 2012, at which time the database became available to a select group of practitioners, pharmacists and law enforcement professionals.

A large number of county wide residents brought their interest and energy to City Hall August 8th for the first meeting of The Humane Animal Shelter of San Saba (HASSS). Several topics were discussed, introductions were made and when the dust settled, it was apparent there was a sizeable group of volunteers anxious to move forward with the formation of a Humane Shelter.

LCRA’s Board of Directors, on August 15th, authorized General Manager Becky Motal to move forward on three projects aimed at helping the Lower Colorado River Authority increase the state’s water supply.Two of the projects involve agricultural land in Wharton and Colorado counties, close to the Colorado River. The parcels could be the site for new off-channel water reservoirs built with earthen embankments excavated from the sites.

Six families, including 12 children and 10 adults, are currently being assisted by the American Red Cross after a three-alarm apartment fire, August 16th, off of Riverside Drive in Austin. Those families are receiving assistance for a safe place to stay, food, and to replace some of the clothes and personal items lost in the fire.

Some $1.4 million in donations have been raised since the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department launched a statewide appeal to help close a $4.6 million budget gap brought on by devastating wildfires, record drought and a corresponding drop in visitation.“Visit your state parks—it’s a simple and enjoyable way to help,” said Carter Smith, TPWD executive director, noting that visitor fees pay for about half the cost to operate the state park system.

San Saba Young Farmers will be hosting their Youth Rodeo on August 24th and 25th at 7:00 p.m. at the San Saba Rodeo Arena. This year two new events will be held that are sure to be crowed pleasers.Mutton Bustin will be held on Saturday, the 25th for ages 8 and under Wild Shetland Bare-Back Riding will be held both nights with buckles being awarded for Best Ride and Worst Wreck in both events.All of the other events that we have all come to enjoy will also be held.

Reasons for rain might come in many colors. Lots of folks around our parts speak of the weather nearly all the time, but the most oft mentioned aspect would be whether or not we might be getting another rain or of how dry it is. Late last week I happened to be visiting with Olan Tisdale down at Stafford’s and he parted, saying that he hoped I would be writing this edition listing how much rain some of the folks around the County had measured over the weekend.

Texas Parks and Wildlife and Texas Tech University are teaming up to conduct a four-month on-line survey among anglers who fish in Texas Hill Country rivers and streams. Researches will attempt to evaluate the economic impact of angling in rivers and streams in the region. The survey findings will help guide future habitat restoration efforts, and opportunities to enhance and expand fishing access in the Texas Hill Country.

James Luther Beckner passed away on Monday, August 13, 2012, at the age of 94. James was born May 6, 1918, in Chilsom, Rockwall County, Texas, the son of Ambrose Dudley and Harmour Julia Fatheree Beckner. He moved to San Saba with his widowed mother and siblings in 1933. He loved music and was a song leader in the Church of Christ in San Saba.

Marcus Wade Madison, 42, of Big Lake passed away on August 7, 2012, in San Angelo, Texas. He was born in Denver City, Texas, on December 10, 1969, to James E. Madison and Patricia Ann Brice Madison. Thanks to all the fans that came out to the Varsity and JV scrimmages at San Angelo this past Saturday. For the most part the coaching staff was pleased with both scrimmages. There is still a lot of room for improvement as we strive to be the best we can be.

The annual Richland Springs and Elm Grove rodeos are past and two-a-days are in progress. This signals the start of a new school year. Richland Springs staff reported for duty on Monday August 20th for in-service. Students report for the first day of school on August 27th. Most students have registered for classes.

Kinzie Homeyer, a member of the Robinson 9 to 10-year-old softball team, won the Texas West State Championship in a tournament in Ft. Worth, recently. This coming Saturday, August 25th, a Youth Soccer registration will be held at the courthouse. Registration will be held from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. The registration will be held with representatives of the Llano Youth Soccer board to answer questions as we begin a youth league for the San Saba youth.
