The San Saba County Commissioners Court was held on Monday, July 23rd at 9:00 a.m. in the County Judge’s Chambers. Commissioner Rickey Lusty presided over the meeting in the absence of County Judge Byron Theodosis. Lusty called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone to Court. The San Saba Garden Club would like to announce the winner of the July 2012 San Saba Yard of the Month. The award goes to Sara and Richard Huron’s residence at 110 W. Pecan Street where, amid our hot weather days, feelings of pleasant coolness come from the nicely manicured lawn, beautiful plants, and colorful accents.

The San Saba ISD Board of Trustees held a regular meeting on Monday, July 16th at 8:00 a.m. in the Central Administration office. President Kim Kirk called the meeting to order with a quorum present with Board member Suzie Nettleship and Assistant Superintendent Michael Bohensky absent. President Kirk welcomed everyone followed by the pledges to the American and Texas flags.

There have been a few questions rolling around in my head lately and I was thinking perhaps some of you might have some answers for me. A hint of rain, but just a few drops Sunday, not enough to measure. No reports of rain in the forecast, just how hot it will be, which you don’t need someone on TV telling you about it. All we can do is hope for some rain sometime in the near future.The news this week is about as plentiful as the rain we are not getting.

Goodness gracious, July is almost gone! Look out kids, school is coming! I’ve been so busy this summer that the whole holiday’s thing has just flown by without a break. I am headed for Canada next week. Russ is going to batch it for a few days. Actually it will be about two weeks.

He told me of his childhood and when he was about fifteen he entered the calf roping at the local community rodeo. Calf roping was not new to him because he was raised on a ranch and even better he was big for his age. When they turned his calf loose he charged out of the box very quickly threw the loop and missed.

Brooke Esquivel, daughter of Larry & Robin Esquivel, was awarded a red ribbon for her knitted prayer shawl at the Lampasas County Spring Ho Fair. Brooke learned how to knit by attending the4-H Sticks & Strings knitting class that began in March under the direction of Cathy Ledbetter. The group first learned to finger knit and then advanced to knitting with needles.

Central Texas Electric Cooperative (CTEC) acknowledged LCRA’s legal maneuvers made Wednesday regarding a dispute over the Wholesale Power Agreement (WPA). LCRA filed a petition in State Court in Travis County on July 18, without any offer to resolve the issue with CTEC and the other LCRA customers that delivered a Notice of Breach of contract to LCRA recently.“While LCRA’s actions are disappointing, they were expected,” said CTEC General Manager and CEO Bob Loth.

I recently enjoyed a fantastic week in June accompanying my niece’s family for a vacation in Kailua-Kona on The Big Island of Hawai'i. The first morning, a Monday, I planned for a day of sightseeing and shopping. At breakfast, my nephew, Mike, asked, “Would you like to go out deep sea fishing because we have room for one more on the boat?” He had arranged for this private charter months in advance.

Saturday, July 7, 2012 the annual Millican Reunion was held at the San Saba Civic Center. Descendants of Mose and Virginia Millican as well as those of Miles and Bertha Millican gather each year on the Saturday nearest the Fourth of July. There were some 42 family and friends who met for lunch and visiting.

Our beautiful Gracie Moore celebrated her 100th birthday at Pecan Valley Nursing and Rehab. Sunday, July 1, Miss Gracie's family came to visit and threw a party for her. It was said that she even did the "birthday dance." On Tuesday, July 3, she was treated to a "cow" themed party hosted by PVNR.

There were 133 laboratory-confirmed animal rabies cases reported from the 30 county area of Health Service Region 7 (HSR7) during the first half of 2012. Region 7 staff investigated an additional 68 non-negative (decomposed, destroyed, and unsatisfactory) rabies test result incidents for a total of 201 rabies-related case investigations.Rabies was confirmed in HSR7 in 73 bats, 41 skunks, 7 foxes, 5 raccoons, 4 cats, one dog, one cow and one coyote.

On a beautiful first Saturday in July, 2012 we once again celebrated with The Stars & Stripes of Richland Springs. The parade started the days festivities at around 9 a.m. Our flags were carried by Micheal & Mykah McKinnerney of Richland Springs. We commend these two fine young riders on a job well done at showing the pride and respect these flags deserve.After the parade there was horseshoes, washers, 42 tournament, watermelon eating and seed spitting.

Dale L. Johanson passed from this life on July 13, 2012. He was born in Bluffton, Texas on November 18, 1922. He was the next to the youngest of eleven (11) children. Dale graduated from Cherokee High School in 1941. After public school he served his country in the United States Marine Corps in WWII.

James Ferrell of Austin, Texas passed away Wednesday, July, 18, 2012 at home, surrounded by his loving wife of 56 years and family. He was born in San Saba, Texas in 1934 to James Ferrell, Sr. and Mamie Moore Ferrell. After graduating from San Saba High School, he joined the Army where he served in the 263rd Ordinance Det., as an intelligence technician in Huntsville, AL.

The San Saba Junior Lady Dillos (34-8) finished their season in style by capturing the 2012 Austin Lady Magic Summer Classic Basketball Tournament championship in Round Rock on Saturday July 21. On their way to the championship, the Lady Dillos picked up wins over the Liberty Hill Swoosh, 24-20, and tournament host Austin Lady Magic, 34-17.

The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met July 19, 2010 for play day with the chair for July, Sandee Hartley, calling for a game of ‘ones’ playing the holes that begin with the letters o n e s - less half your handicap. First Place went to Janet Hoyt, who also scored the Low Net for the day, Second to Dorothy Sterner, and a tie for third between Sandee Hartley and Jo Anne Hardy.

The scheduled date for the completion of the renovation work in the SSHS science labs, special education life-skills classroom and teacher workroom is August 10, 2012. According to the onsite construction manager, it appears this project will come on line as scheduled. At the current time the physical high school building is in much disarray, but the staff of SSISD will ensure that the building is ready for the first day of school.
