SSISD Retirees - Saturday, May 26 was the final day of school for San Saba ISD. An end of the year breakfast was held to wrap up the year and recognize those who are leaving the district and those retiring. Eddie Edwards has received notification that he has been inducted in the Rock-A-Billy Hall of Fame from Nashville, Tennessee. Eddie played in Tommy Sands band from 1957 to 1959, and toured all over the United States and Canada, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania, and appeared at the Hollywood Bowl, the Coconut Grove, the Waldorf Astoria, and many, many more.

On Monday, June 18th, a San Saba County Jury indicted Carl Wade Pressley, Lillian Annette King and Bruce Wayne Harkey of Murder. Presley and King were also indicted for Burglary of a Habitation to Commit a Felony.Sheriff Brown stated, "The Sheriff's Office and the District Attorney's Office met with the Grand Jury for over four hours and that the results were exactly what we expected.

The San Saba City Council installed newly elected officials before a Public Hearing and Regular Session at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 12th. Mayor Ken Jordan called the meeting to order and announced a quorum present. It was our fault because when we planted the little trees in our yard years ago to close together. One was a pecan and the other a non bearing mulberry. Right away the mulberry took off and grew but the pecan was much slower. Over time the mulberry provided a lot of shade, so much that it kept the pecan form growing very well.

Sunday afternoon late a bit of rain fell around the Bend area leaving 3/8 inch of rain. Not much but every little drop will help.The fish fry at the Methodist Camp Ground was a big success Friday night. People came from all over to enjoy the fish fry and enjoyed listening to Allison Hendrick singing.

Praise the Lord it is raining! Big angry swirling crowds are rolling all over heaven and the rain is pouring down. I hope it stays that way for hours. I can see that many communities in the area are getting a wonderful blessing. Speaking of blessings, I have my two beautiful granddaughters for the week.

City of Llano employees will host “Men in Black 3” this weekend at the LanTex Theater. MIB3 is rated PG-13 and will show on Friday, June 22, at 7:30 p.m. and again on Saturday, June 23, at 4:00 and 7:30 p.m. Volunteers will raise money through concession sales to help pay for ongoing expenses of our downtown treasure, the LanTex Theater.

In the mid 1870s, Andrew, Mark and Polk Oliver moved to San Saba county. One brother, John M. Oliver remained in Williamson County. The descendants of the four brothers met at Harmony Ridge on June 9 and 10, 2012 for their annual reunion.On Saturday, a small group met to discuss genealogy.

Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC)The first confirmed case of anthrax in a Texas animal for 2012 has been detected in an adult white-tailed male deer near Uvalde (Uvalde County). At this time no domestic livestock are involved. Anthrax is a bacterial disease caused by Bacillus anthracis, which is a naturally occurring organism with worldwide distribution, including Texas.

The monthly meeting of the Bend-Chappel County Extension Education Clubs met Monday, June 11 at the Bend Methodist Church. The meeting opened with attendees sharing personal tips on how they save on energy costs. Some useful tips included: washing clothes in cold water, raising the temperature control on the air conditioner, opening windows versus running the a/c, installing a rain water capture system, and turning out the lights when not in use.

Dyllan Bryan Thiebaud is proud to announce the arrival of his little sister, Anna Grace Thiebaud. She is the daughter of Jonathan and KayCee Thiebaud of San Saba. Anna was born May 23rd at 4:56pm in Fredericksburg. She weighed 6 lbs. 5 ozs. and was 19 inches long. Grandparents are Ernie Doshier of Breckenridge, Debby Doshier of Abilene and Monte and Roxanna Thiebaud of Dublin.

The descendants of John Wesley and Margaret Stevens Robbins held a family reunion at the San Saba Senior Center on Saturday, May 19. 2012. Present were grandchildren, great grandchildren and a couple of great-great grandchildren.Those attending from San Saba were the following: Pauline Stewart, Chris Stewart, Larry & Dana Sanderson, Sarah Price, Bruce Stewart, Doris Porter and son, Gary Porter.

The Fellowship of Christian Women are planning a Summer Casseroles and Desserts Luncheon at the fellowship hall of Parkview Baptist Church. Parkview ladies extend an invitation to all the ladies of the county to gather Thursday, June 28th at 11:30 for the covered dish meal. Please look thru your recipes and prepare a casserole or a dessert great for summertime, since it has been so hot lately.

Three precious little girls with hearts the size of Texas sold lemonade and cookies last Saturday, June 9, in front of Cherokee Grocery. Kyler Bordner, Kendall Johnson, and Landry Poss joined hands to help less fortunate children. They were raising money for The Hope Factory, a non-profit corporation run by John and Mary Catherine Holley of Cherokee.

The Kerrville Police Department is asking the public’s help in locating Carlos Melendez-Martinez. Martinez was last seen on June 17, 2012, after 1pm at the Kerrville State Hospital (KSH) in the 700 block of Thompson. Martinez was held at KSH for aggravated robbery and arson. He should be considered armed and dangerous.

This past week I witnessed a complete make over of a 2 bedroom, 1 bath home into a 4 bedroom, 2 bath home. Mission San Saba is an amazing group of people. There were so many volunteers working inside and outside of the home. 6 days later, they finished an outstanding accomplishment.

The Texas Reading Club 2012, Get a Clue...at the Library! provides opportunities for children of all ages to enjoy reading. It begins on June 20, 2012 at the Rylander Public Library. The elementary program for ages K-4th grade is 1:30 to 2:30 and the teen program is 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

James B. Douglass, USDA Texas Farm Service Agency (FSA) Acting Executive Director announced that 767,242 acres were accepted during the 43rd Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) general sign-up, bringing the total number of active CRP acres in Texas to 3,302,035. Nationwide, USDA accepted enrollment of 3.9 million acres bringing the total program enrollment to 29.6 million acres.

Receipts totaled 1351 head for the week. Demand was good on a very choice offering with the stocker steers selling steady to $1 higher and stocker heifers steady to $2 higher. Feeder steers were steady to $2 higher and feeder heifers were $1 higher. Packer cows were $1 higher and bulls were $1 lower.

On Monday July 9th, the training necessary to obtain a Private Applicators License will be presented. The training will be held in the Fellowship Hall at First Baptist Church in San Saba, 208 W. Wallace. Training will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will cost $65.00 which includes study materials and reference manuals.

JoAnn Jane Jones, 88, passed away on Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at Llano Memorial Hospital. She was born on January 11, 1924, to William Walters and wife, Augusta Card Walters in Akron, Ohio. She later married William Henry Jones on December 24, 1943 in Boise, Idaho. They had two children, Lawrence Jones and Kathy Cushing.JoAnn lived a long, full life.

Leslie J. Young, 66, of San Saba passed away on June 15, 2012. Leslie was born on October 1, 1945 to Leslie T. Young and Jewel Riggs. He was a life- long resident of San Saba. Leslie joined the Air Force on May 18, 1965 and fought in the Vietnam conflict.

Del Sears is very proud to be announcing that both of his children, Derek William Sears and Christina Nicole-Leigh Sears graduated on May 18, 2012 at 3 p.m. from Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas. Derek graduated CUM LAUDE with a major in Biology and minor in Chemistry. Nicole graduated SUMMA CUM LAUDE with a major in Sociology and minor in Legal Studies.

Two HS recordings and one 7th grade band recording were submitted to the ATSSB Outstanding Performance Series (OPS). OPS is a contest where a panel of judges listen to recordings and determine which recordings sound the best of all the ones submitted in each category. The judges rank the bands based solely on which recording is the most aesthetically pleasing to listen to.

The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met June 14, 2012 for the monthly business meeting. The meeting was called to order by the president, Anita Miles, and opened with prayer led by Janet Hoyt. The secretary, Jo Anne Hardy, read the minutes and they were approved as read and she also gave the financial report in the absence of the treasurer, Hattie Rogers.

I’m so thankful for all the rain we’ve been blessed with. At this time last year we were extremely dry. It’s amazing to see the tanks full! A buzz of activity is going on around here. Students are participating in all kinds of camps and activities. Girls are playing in the San Saba basketball league on Monday nights.

The San Saba Independent School District is blessed by extraordinary scholarship donors. As well, students have worked hard to excel in their academics qualifying them for a wealth of scholarships to pursue their academic endeavors. The graduating seniors received a combined scholarship amount totaling $180,100 dollars to pursue post secondary training.

Samantha Roach, daughter of Poncie and Margaret Roach and a student at San Saba Middle School was selected to travel to the Dallas/Fort Worth area as a participant in Education in Action's Lone Star Leadership Academy, June 10-15, 2012. Samantha's selection for the Academy was based on her outstanding academic success, demonstrated leadership ability, a nomination from her teacher, Judy McCoy, and her involvement in school and community activities.
