The 7th Grade band traveled to Boerne High School on Saturday May 19, 2012 to compete in the “Spring in the Park Music Festival.” The band played music for three judges and received a division one (superior rating) from every judge. At the awards ceremony, the band received trophies for a superior rating, best in class, and overall grand champion for all middle school bands!

Colorado Bend State Park is joining other state parks in celebrating National Trails Day on June 2nd with a variety of trail activities. There will be two guided trail runs (appx. 2.5 and 5.5 miles), two guided mountain bike rides (appx. 18 miles of easy-to-technical trails for experienced riders and appx.

On Saturday, June 2nd, the Freemasons of San Saba Lodge No. 612 will hold their monthly stated meeting. Supper will be served at 6:30 p.m. The main course meal will be pork loin steak, provided by Past Master Thomas L. Alston. All Masons are asked to provide a complementary covered side dish, bread, salad or dessert.

On May 21-22, Sara Hedley, Richland Springs High School senior, participated in the UIL State Meet in Lincoln-Douglas Debate at the University of Texas in Austin. After all the contests were complete, there were sixty top debaters left in the state of Texas in Conferences AAAA-AA. There were twelve debaters left in Conference A.

The 74th Annual San Saba Rodeo kicks off tonight with County Team Roping. No charge to watch and Bull Burgers will be ready to serve.The Livestock and Rodeo Assn. has given free rodeo tickets to all three county schools, K-4th grades, and they must be present for the chance to win a new bicycle.

On Wednesday, May 23rd around 5:30 p.m., a two vehicle crash occurred on Hwy 45 just north of FM 765. Emergency units from San Saba County, Mills County and Brown County responded to assist with the scene.Two of those injured had to be extracted from the vehicles by fire departments working on scene, with all three being transported to area hospitals.

The MyPlate food plan was developed several years ago for the general population. A variation was made for children and another one for older adults. The older adult version looks very similar to the original plan with a few minor changes. It has some very specific messages to older adults.1.

Recently I was in a store when I noticed stuck back on a shelf some little plastic bags with some dried up plants sticking out of the top of them. They were about to throw them out so I made a small offer for them and they took it. I took the little plants home and immediately opened the bags and inside the potting soil was dry as powder so I got the garden hose and watered them.

This technology will give forecasters better information about heavy rainfall in flooding events, hail detection in thunderstorms, and even recognize whether precipitation is in the form of rain, snow or ice.

Sultry spring and summer days may cause dogs and cats to suffer from mosquito bites that can lead to heartworm disease, says Dr. Sonya Gordon, associate professor in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences.Dogs are usually the preferred host for heartworms, but cats are also susceptible to the disease, even indoor cats, Gordon notes.

The spring migration party is over and now we must return to the normal birding routines of watching our permanent and summer resident birds in our backyards, or at a favorite birding venue such as a nature center or park. It is, or will soon be, vacation time when birders can plan trips to special birding hot spots or different habitats, such as the mountains or coastal regions where one can enjoy other recreational activities as well as your birding times.

There has been a lot of activity at Riggs Grain Company in San Saba this spring. Local farmers have the wheat hauled in by trucks to Riggs Grain Company where they are loaded into train cars and shipped out. The company exports most of the grain; for example, the first shipments this year were sent to Algeria flour mills.

Parents and community members that took ESL classes on Thursdays and Fridays during the year were awarded a hamburger dinner last Thursday, May 24 at Javier Baez’s home. Over 32 people received completion certificates on Thursday for finishing the course. English as a Second Language classes were offered on Thursday and Friday evenings in the high school cafeteria from 6:00pm to 7:30pm throughout the year.

The San Saba Gifted & Talented Class grades 5 – 8 recently relived a part of history as they participated in the camping program aboard the Blue Ghost of World War II fame – the USS LEXINGTON Aircraft Carrier – now permanently berthed at Corpus Christi, Texas. The overnight field trip took place on May 8-9.
