The Richland Springs Coyote Sports Banquet will be held this Friday, May 11th in the RS Cafetorium. Meal will be at 6:00 p.m. The Banquet will start at 7:00 p.m. It’ll be $5.00 a plate for everyone. Our student athletes in grades 6-12 will eat for free. We’ll be serving Bar B Que and all the fixings.We will be honoring ALL our student athletes from Jr High through High School.

The 74th Annual San Saba County Professional Rodeo is scheduled for June 1st and 2nd and the Rodeo Parade is returning to the 5:00 p.m. time on opening day of the rodeo.This year's theme is RETRO: Remembering the Good Old Days and it is the hope of the Parade Chairman, Sandy McHorse, that every business, club, bicycle and motorcycle group, church, golf cart owner, cowboy and cowgirl, whether original or drugstore, will participate.

The San Saba Armadillo Varsity Basketball players will be having a pancake supper May 10th from 5pm-7pm at Bon Ami to raise money for a team basketball camp at Southwestern University in June. Players will be selling tickets or tickets can be purchased at Bon Ami. You don’t have to have a ticket to participate,just show up and join us and support your Armadillos.

Luis Vega, a junior at San Saba ISD, won 2nd at Regional in Odessa in the Triple Jump with a distance of 45-08.25. He will compete at the State Track meet in Austin on Friday, May 11th at 3 p.m.

On Sunday, May 6th, at around 6:45 a.m., a one vehicle crash on Highway 16 south at the Buffalo Creek Crossing, cost the life of a local high school senior and injured a second. San Saba County Sheriff’s Office, Texas DPS Troopers, and San Saba Fire/Rescue and EMS responded to the scene.

Dear Editor: I would like to say "hats off to Brian Sours" and his leadership of the San Saba Bands. Under his direction, they have made great accomplishments this past year. I attended the concert on Thursday night. I was so impressed by the 5th grade band and amazed at the progress as each grade performed.

Of all the Neotropical migrants that pass through Texas, the lovely scissor-tailed flycatcher is probably the most welcome of all. Few birds have the appeal of this charismatic flycatcher. It not only is one of our most beautiful and gregarious birds, but it seems to prefer a relationship with humans, nesting on utility poles and in trees often surprisingly close to our homes and other structures.

Wow what a night, got to love that rain no matter what comes with it right now. I was cold, wet and smiling while we were out moving limbs and guarding downed power lines, but not complaining one bit. Thank you Lord for the rain and bring on some more, just if possible maybe a little less wind this time.

Members and guests met at the San Saba Garden Clubhouse in Mill Pond Park at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 1, 2012, but there was no cause for a May Day alarm. With President Ann McElroy presiding and Jo Colonetta, of Georgetown ready with her Floral Design presentation, the last meeting of the spring season was off to an enthusiastic beginning.

The Scottish Rite Club will hold their quarterly meeting on Monday, May 14th, at the Masonic Lodge Hall in San Saba. A meal of barbecue chicken and pork ribs, baked potatoes and red beans will be provided by the officers and served at 6:30 p.m. All members are asked to bring a complimentary covered side dish of dessert as a large crowd is expected for the program.

The Sharon Club met May 1st in the home of Jymmie Linzey. A delicious salad supper was enjoyed by all. Betty Miller installed the new officers for the coming year. Jymmie Linzey as new president, gave out the committees for the coming year. We will have a float in the rodeo parade and we will be selling history books at County Peddler's Day.As this is our last meeting until September, we revealed our Secret Pal and drew for the coming year.

San Saba is within the 30 county Region 7 of the Texas Department of State Health Services.There were 43 laboratory confirmed animal rabies cases reported in the first quarter ending March 31st, 2012, in our region. Region 7 staff also investigated an additional 23 non-negative rabies test result incidents for a total of 66 rabies related case investigations.Rabies was confirmed in HSR7 in 21 skunks, 15 bats, 4 raccoons, 2 cats and one coyote.

Receipts totaled 1755 head for the week. The market was active and demand was good. The stocker steers and heifers all sold steady to $2 to $3 higher. The feeder steers sold steady to $1 higher and the feeder heifers sold steady. The packer cows were $1 higher with the top cow at $94 and packer bulls were $1 to $2 higher with the top bull at $115.

Glenn Lewis, 64, of Llano, Texas passed away Tuesday May 1, 2012. Glenn was born June 21, 1947 to Robert Gordon Lewis and Amanda (Purcell) Lewis in Spicewood, Texas. Glenn married Jeanette Jones on January 17, 1980 in Llano, Texas; she preceded him in death on February 9, 2012. He was also preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Wanell Haydon.

She was born on August 12, 1957, to Chuck and Virginia Sewell, and she lived most of her life in and around San Saba County.Lois Ann loved to be with family and friends. Payten Dewayne Vaughn, age 18 of Cherokee, passed away Sunday, May 6, 2012. He was born on October 19, 1993 in Abilene, Texas and attended Albany I.S.D. before moving to Cherokee where he was a senior at Cherokee High School. Payten was a member of the Cherokee F.F.A., played basketball, and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

.On Monday, April 30th, the Freemasons of San Saba, Order of Eastern Star & the Scottish Rite Club hosted their annual Seniors Banquet. The 2012 senior classes of Cherokee, Richland Springs and San Saba high schools were in attendance. Eighty-six people were present and enjoyed a meal of fried fish, fries and hushpuppies.

On April 24th, San Saba Bird and Nature Club sponsored a birding event in the LCRA San Saba River Nature Park. San Angelo’s Concho Valley Bird Banders and volunteers from SSB&NC helped more than 250 people increase their appreciation of the natural world we all share. After seeing the announcement in this month’s Texas Parks and Wildlife magazine, folks from as far away as Leander, Arlington, and Belton attended.

Last Tuesday, May 1, we travelled to Clifton for a practice game. It had no bearing on our standings or what was set for us in the playoff situation. We hit the ball well against some quality pitching and held an extremely good hitting team in check for about half of the game.

This past Saturday, May 5, a group of five students and three adults travelled to Abilene for the Special Olympic Track and Field events for this area. The events were being held at Elmer Gray Field on the campus of Abilene Christian University. Each participant is allowed to compete in one running or walking event, and in one field event.The boys did their running first while girls competed in the field events.

On April 14 our Middle School Tennis Team after 3 days of practice played in the Lampasas tennis tournament. Teams in the tournament were San Saba, Lampasas, Copperas Cove, Marble Falls, Brownwood and Brady. We competed well considering the lack of practice as the other teams had been practicing since Sept.

Seven young men, because of their hard work and dedication made the trip to the 1-2A Track Meet. We as coaches are very proud of these young men. They conducted themselves as gentlemen and competed to the best of their abilities. San Saba should be proud to have had these young men represent them at this meet.
