The San Saba County Commissioners Court was held on Monday, April 30th at 9:00 a.m. in the County Judge’s Chambers. County Judge, Byron Theodosis, called the Court to order and welcomed everyone. County Commissioner, Rickey Lusty gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags.Two concerned citizens addressed the Court.

Tanner Hawkins, 12th Grade, Cornet/Trumpet, San Saba High School was nominated by Band Director Brian Sours to receive the Texas Music Scholars Award. Shellie Dawn Haley, 21 years of age of Lampasas was killed in a one vehicle roll over just southeast of the Bend Store on Wednesday the 25th. Haley was leaving the fishing camps with two friends when the accident occurred and she was ejected from and pinned under the vehicle.

May is Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month
The Texas Department of Public Safety is reminding drivers to take extra precautions around motorcyclists on Texas streets and highways, as Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month begins May 1.“Motorcyclists face unique safety challenges on Texas roads because they are smaller, more difficult to see and less protected than cars and trucks,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw.

The San Saba Co. Extension Education Clubs will host their annual May Event on Wednesday, May 9th at the San Saba Civic Center. Each year the E. E. Clubs offer a varied program to enlighten and entertain the audience followed by lunch served by the Extension Club Members. This year Valarie Cortinovis will be demonstrating and teaching us All About Spinning.

FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) will host Mirror Mirror this week-end. The San Saba Bands Spring Concert/Awards banquet will start at 6:00 p.m. Thursday May 3, 2012 at the First Baptist Church. 5th grade, 6th Grade, 7th grade, and High School bands will be performing. Parents and community members are encouraged to come listen to the award winning San Saba band program present our annual spring concert titled “A Spirited Spring.” We would greatly appreciate if you would stay for all the bands performances as our audience is our inspiration!

Every day more and more of the summer bird residents are taking their places among the permanent residents as this is a busy time of the year for all birds. The males are trying to establish their territories, defend the territory from intruders and seek a mate while the females are looking for nest sites, adjusting their diets to produce healthy eggs and, like the males, looking for attractive mates.

Another tragic motor vehicle crash occurred this past week here in our county. Shellie Dawn Haley, of Lampasas County, just 21 years of age lost her life in a one vehicle accident out in the Bend. Haley and two friends were out at the river enjoying the day when on the way home she crashed and was thrown from her vehicle and killed.

At the peak of bluebonnets blooming along the county roads, the quilting club, San Saba Sew-N-Sews, followed Joy Smith out to her home south of San Saba. Ten ladies from San Saba and Bend traveled together enjoying the beautiful green scenery and flowers blooming everywhere. When we arrived she gave us a tour of their recently remodeled home, and we even saw the “Man Cave,” an apartment especially for the family and guests.

The Texas AgriLife Extension Service in Mills County will conduct at Quail Appreciation Day from 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. May 10 in the Mills County State Bank Community Room in Goldthwaite. “Bobwhite quail are an important part of our region’s wildlife resource, but unfortunately, like the rest of the south, we’re seeing fewer and fewer wild birds these days,” said Tom Guthrie, AgriLife Extension agent in Mills County.

Receipts totaled 1547 head for the week. Stocker steers sold $2 to $3 lower while stocker heifers sold steady from last week. Feeder steers sold $2 to $3 lower and feeder heifers sold $3 lower. Packer cows and bulls sold steady with the top selling cow at $94 and the top selling bull at $111.

Bobby Dee Sunday, 64, of Houston passed away on April 21, 2012. He was born on January 15,1948 to Jeb and Rose Survoc Sunday in Galena Park, Texas. He later served two tours of duty in the Vietnam Conflict. Bobby loved the outdoors and enjoyed coming to San Saba. He thought that San Saba was very peaceful and looked forward to spending more time here.

A week ago last Monday, April 23, our varsity team travelled to Hico for the last game of the regular season. Having a lead in the standings for second place by a couple of games, our second place position in district and our spot in the playoffs was secure no matter the outcome of the game.

Richland Springs ISD is proud to announce Sara Hedley as Valedictorian and Kensie Green as Salutatorian of the 2011-2012 class.I would like to congratulate the students on 100% attendance during last week’s STAAR/TAKS testing. Thanks to the staff and faculty the week of the state assessment testing went smooth-ly. Elementary and middle school students are taking the bulk of their STAAR tests this week, but the passing standards for those exams won’t be released until the fall.

The District 7 4-H Junior/Intermediate Photography Contest was held recently in San Angelo. 4-H’ers in the 23 counties that make up district 7 enter. It is always a very competitive contest. Five San Saba County 4-H’er entered the junior/intermediate contest. One 4-H’er entered the State Photography Contest. The results for it are available till June.

San Saba ISD will host the 2011-2012 Federal Programs Evaluation Meeting on Thursday, May 10th at 5:00pm in the high school cafeteria. Funding information and program requirements will be covered during this meeting. Parents, please make plans to attend. Libby is once again STATE BOUND!!!Libby Lasley won the 3200m race at the Regional track meet on Friday at Judson’s D.W. Rut-ledge Stadium. She placed 3rd in the 1600m race on Saturday. Talli Morrison performed well in the discus event. As one of the youngest athletes in the event, it’s great to know she’ll be back in the competition next year.

Shelby Hardy earned All-Southland Conference honors for the third time and Meghan Musk picked up her first post-season honor as the two Sam Houston State student-athletes earned berths on the 2012 women’s golf all-league team. Have you ever given thought to the value of our teachers? The old adage of “those who can’t do, teach” is the most absurd comment I have ever heard. Until a person has actually served as a teacher, it is truly hard to understand the complexities of the profession. The teaching profession is more than a profession; it is a passion and a way of life.

The Mustang Heritage Foundation gave the San Saba High School Equine Science class a chance to participate in their Youth Program. The Youth Program gives younger people a chance to connect with the Mustangs and their legends. The Mustang Heritage Foundation wants to get the word out about American Mustangs and would like more people to know about these horses and how they need more support.
