San Saba High School One Act Play competed at district competition on March 24, 2012. The group competed with RT Robinson’s, The Cover of Life. Individual honors went to Courtney Pryor for All-Star Cast, Paige Chambers for Honorable Mention All-Star Cast and Ashia Chambers received the Technical Crew Award.

The Commissioners' Court has been asked to consider setting a rollout fee. After searching surrounding EMS organizations and collecting the pertinent facts, we have decided to set that fee at $100. Corresponding fees from our neighboring organizations range from $100 to $185.This EMS rollout fee becomes effective on May 1st of 2012, and it will apply only to calls where it is determined that not only was no transport required but that the call was clearly trivial and unnecessary.This action ...

The San Saba Bands went to UIL Concert & Sight-Reading on April 12th. The Concert portion of the contest involves playing three pieces of music which have been prepared over several months, and are performed on stage for three judges. The judges use a standardized rubric system, and all three judges’ scores make up a composite score.

The San Saba City Council conducted a Public Hearing prior to the regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, April 10th at 6:00 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. Mayor Ken Jordan called the hearing to order and announced a quorum present with alderman Oleta Behrens absent. The San Saba high school band performed on April 12th as well and received a division 1 (Superior Rating) on stage for the third consecutive year in a row. This marks the first division 1 “three-peat” for the high school band in at least a decade. The High School Band also received a division 2 in sight-reading for the first time in three years, and shows that our band’s reading skills are improving.

Get ready for the “San Saba Pecan Bottom Concert Series.” The first one is this Saturday, April 21, 2012 at Risien Park and admission is free. Gates open at 7:00 p.m. with pulled pork sandwiches and coleslaw from Bon Ami, Texas wine from Fiesta Winery, Texas Microbrewed Beer from the Bar D Brewhouse, and pecans, pecans and pecan caramel popcorn, and pecans from Oliver Pecan.Then at 8:00 p.m.

Bryant Patton of San Saba celebrated his birthday on April 13th. He is 91 years old. Mr. Patton served in the armed forces from 1941 until 1945 and then returned to San Saba to make his home. He worked for San Saba County for 24 years and has been a member of the Assembly of God Church for 65 years.

The San Saba A&M Club's annual Muster event will be held Saturday, April 21, 2012 at the RV Park Pavillion going into the San Saba Golf Course. The evening's activities will commence at 6:00 p.m. in the area around the Burn Ring below the Recreation Center.The program will include a steak dinner and refreshments, introduction of our San Saba future Aggies, and observance of the Muster Tradition.

The Masonic Bodies of Order of Eastern Star (OES), San Saba Scottish Rite Club and San Saba Masonic Lodge No. 612, will hold their annual Fish Fry-Bake Sale on Tuesday, April 24th. Each year at this time the Masonic community comes together to raise funds for the Lamar Medal Scholarship Fund & Seniors Banquet.The Fish Fry and Bakes Sale will begin at 11:00 a.m.

The San Saba City Council convened for a Called Meeting on Friday, April 13th at noon in the City Hall Council Chambers. Mayor, Ken Jordan, called the meeting to order and announced a quorum with all members of the Council present. The one item on the agenda was to review and consider bids from non-profit corporations or community service organizations for the purchase of the Risien Building located at 116 S.

Kenneth and Laverne Drews were recently honored by their family and relatives for their 60th wedding anniversary. They were married Easter Sunday morning, April 13, 1952 at the Calvary Baptist Church in Harlingen, Texas. They lived in the Lower Rio Grande Valley until moving to San Saba County in June, 1971, where they were teachers in San Saba I.S.D.

Plans are coming together for the April Fellowship of Christian Women’s Luncheon in San Saba’s First Baptist Church fellowship hall. Ladies of this church give the ladies of our county a very special invitation to come next Thursday, April 26th at 11:30 a.m. Our luncheon will feature Spring Ladies Choice so bring a favorite to share around the serving tables.

How would you feel if you heard your four year old son screaming and crying, "They're going to kill my dog, they're going to shoot my dog."?That's what I heard after about forty-five minutes of the Chief of Police, the Humane Officer and 5 city employees trying to catch my son's dog.They told my wife, "We need your help to catch that dog or we are going to have to shoot it."

Things are slowly getting back to normal here at the Sheriff's office. We are getting patrol back up to full staff and we are looking forward to more contacts this weekend and letting people know that we're out there. I still have two deputies assigned to our major case, but as of now, they can begin to take other calls and work other assignments as well.We all know that with the warmer weather, comes more calls further out into the county.

Among the purposes of the Child Welfare Board (CWB) is to help the children who are removed from their homes by child protective services. This is done by providing extra services that are needed by the children that the state does not pay for. There is a budget provided by the county each year of $2,500.

Receipts totaled 1124 head for the week with no sale being held at Mason this week due to the Easter holiday. Stocker steers and heifers were steady after last week’s sharp increase. The big feeder steers were steady to $2 lower and the heifers were $3 lower after last week’s drop on the futures market due to the media coverage on the lean beef issue that made national news.

First, a group of about 30 participants began the Texas AgriLife Master Gardener class on January 23 under the direction of Extension Agent Carolyn McDowell.

Ila Mae Boren, 83, passed away on April 10, 2012, at her home in San Saba. She was born on November 5, 1928, to John Thomas Gates and Ardelia Mitchell Gates in Pearl, Texas. She lived in and around San Saba for over 40 years.In August of l939, Ila Mae was baptized into The Church of Christ at the age of 11.

Priscilla Fae Burleson Stogsdill was born October 12, 1927 in Clyde, Texas to parents, Marvin A. and Fannie Mae Burleson who predeceased her. She peacefully passed away following a brief illness on April 10 in Austin, Texas. Priscilla was married to husband, Warren Leslie Stogsdill for 51 years until his death in 1998.

Parents and guardians, it is so very important to keep your kiddos attending school each and every day. SSHS Spelling Team was 2nd Place but will advance to Regional competition in Odessa as the Wild Card Team for having the Highest Second Place Team score. Team Members are Nickie Ortiz, Lauren Dawson, Hector Paez, Heather Wilcox, and Andrea Jimenez. Heather was 3rd and Lauren was 6th as individual contestants.

SSHS’s First Place Accounting Team will advance to regional competition at Odessa College. Team members are Ashley Pulatie, Kristen Jordan, Joannah Crosby, Tanner Weyerts. Joannah Crosby placed 3rd and Allan Hale 6th as individuals. The team is coached by Colleen Womack.

The 1953 San Saba High School graduating class gathered at Leaning Bluff Lodge at Barefoot Camp Saturday, April 14. Some of the class members were ill and could not come. The San Saba Leaders 4 Life team got 3rd place at the District 7 Leaders 4 Life contest-junior division in San Angelo. Team members are Erin Ratliff, Ethan-Allen May, Abigail Meador and John-Samuel May. Each team had to put on a mock meeting in front of judges using Parliamentary Procedure.

Last week the Cherokee FFA participated in the Area Career development Events. The teams did very well for their first time and placed in the top 10 in Area 7. The Wildlife team consisting of Ryan Breadner, Stephen Auster-man,Barbra Uribe and Paco Shannon traveled to San Angelo. The students must be able to identify all plant species that wildlife eat, Habitat evaluation, Habitat mng., Biological facts, plant preference,Skull and hide identification,Safety,Game laws and Techniques.

Hard times call for doing more with less. Last year’s drought caused hardships for anyone involved in agriculture. Is the drought over? Will the spring rains continue? The Richland Springs area is more likely to be dry than wet. We are used to dry weather. Is the drought in school funding over?

Back on Tuesday, April 10, the San Saba Armadillo baseball team travelled to Dublin to take on the Lions in a district matchup. The game started off well for San Saba as Zack Davis drew a walk on seven pitches. Later, Ryan Pannell would single to center bringing Davis home for the first run.

REGIONAL BOUND! Congratulations to Libby Lasley, Talli Morrison and Ryan Breadner, who have all qualified for the regional track meet to be held at San Antonio on April 27-28. Libby will be competing in the 1600m and 3200m run. Talli will throw the discus, and Ryan will throw the shot put.

The cast of the Richland Springs High School One Act Play stopped long enough to pose for this photo in the Bluebonnets of San Saba County before heading to the AREA One Act Play Competition. The Area contest was held in Fredericksburg on Saturday, April 14th. Brooklyn McGinty as Ouiser and Katelynn Teel as Shelby were named to the Honorable Mention All Star Cast, and Sara Hedley, who played M’Lynn, received the All-Star Cast award.

On Monday and Wednesday San Saba competed in the District 6AA Track Meet at Bangs. We were very proud of the way our young men competed. They performed at the highest level that they were capable of and as a result, seven young men will advance to the AA Regional Track Meet at Odessa on 4-27 and 4-28.

RTI stands for Response to Intervention. This is a loosely used term that has been greatly used in the school business for many years. There are many articles and books devoted to the topic. Approaches to reading instruction have the common goal of maximizing the reading achievement of all students in a school.

Sam Houston State junior Shelby Hardy was named the Southland Conference Women’s Golfer of the Month for April, the league office announced Thursday.Hardy helped lead Sam Houston to a second-place team finish by claiming top individual honors at the Houston Baptist Husky Invitational, April 2-3. The San Saba product claimed her second individual championship of the season with a three-round total 6-over par score of 222, including a low-round of 70.
