The 74th Annual San Saba County Professional Rodeo is scheduled for June 1st and 2nd and the Rodeo Parade is returning to the 5:00 p.m. time on opening day of the rodeo. This year's theme is RETRO: Remembering the Good Old Days and it is the hope of the Parade Chairman, Sandy McHorse, that every business, club, bicycle and motorcycle group, church, golf cart owner, cowboy and cowgirl, whether original or drugstore, will participate.

The San Saba County Commissioners Court was held on Monday, April 9th at 9 a.m. in the County Judge’s Chambers. County Judge, Byron Theodosis called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone to the court. The San Saba Tennis Team dominated District 6-AA, qualifying 12 out of the 16 spots for regional. The girls team took all 8 spots and the boys took 4 of the 8 on the boys side. Early qualified 3 boys and Comanche took 1 boy spot. Lauren Dawson won 1st place in Girls Singles by defeating teammate Joely Haverland who came in second place.

The San Saba A&M Club's annual Muster event will be held Saturday, April 21, 2012 at the RV Park Pavillion going into the San Saba Golf Course. The evening's activities will commence at 6:00 p.m. in the area around the Burn Ring below the Recreation Center.The program will include a steak dinner and refreshments, introduction of our San Saba future Aggies, and observance of the Muster Tradition.

April is Child Abuse Awareness month. On Wednesday, April 11th, we will have a “Go Blue” day and are asking everyone in our county, children and adults, to wear something blue on this day to help us all be aware that child abuse and neglect is a problem.

On Saturday, March 31, many friends and family members gathered at Eventide Nursing Home to help Sara Maultsby celebrate her 90th birthday. One table was decorated with a card basket that filled up in a hurry. Also there were pictures of Sara in first grade, a recent picture, her and her children, all of her grandchildren, and one of her and her best friends - "The Golden Girls."Another table was decorated with a beautiful flower arrangement made by her granddaughter, Heather Bourke.

If you’ve been on a walk through San Saba’s new LCRA River Nature Park since last week, you might have been surprised by the newly planted area at the beginning of the path around the grounds. Now planted in the ground and tenderly watered are the young plants for our new Butterfly Garden!

A Luminaria Ceremony for cancer survivors (anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer) and in memory of those lost to the disease will take place Friday, April 13th at 9:00 p.m. at the 2012 San Saba County Relay for Life. Bags containing lit candles will be placed around Risien Park, while participants walk a lap by the light of hundreds of candles.

The Cowboy Cemetery Association will hold their annual workday and meeting at the Historic Cemetery on Saturday, April 21, 2012. Members and interested parties are asked to bring their own tools and to wear work clothes. A barbecue lunch will be provided by the association at 12:00 noon. The association will provide the ice, food, plates, eating utensils and condiments.

Flame acanthus puts out a welcoming feast for hummers and butterflies, just one of the reasons why it was included in the new butterfly garden at the San Saba Nature Park that was planted by of volunteers last week. The first time caterpillars swarmed our flame acanthus, my husband snipped off the infected branch and relocated it elsewhere.

Well Easter has come and gone and its one of my favorite times of the year. I always look forward to not only the holiday and what it represents, but to the changes to the hill county as well. On Monday, April 2, Angela Johnson's High School Mentor group volunteered and raised supplies for the San Saba Animal Shelter. The students include Joy Trujillo, Kayla Kutin, Shelby Butler and Ashlyn Turner. Angela and her students would like to thank everyone in the community who donated and supported them. The project was a success because many animals lives were saved.

The Tocker Foundation of Austin has awarded a $20,125 grant to fund a traveling trunks program for San Saba County. The market remains active with packer cows selling $2 higher with the top cow selling for 93.00 and packer bulls sold steady with the top bull bringing 108.00. Stocker steers and heifers sold steady in an active market. Feeder steers sold steady to $3 lower while feeder heifers sold $2 to $3 lower.

The 3rd & 4th grade San Saba Junior Lady Dillos wrapped up a very successful 2012 season.Despite only carrying six players, the Lady Dillos finished up with a 10-3 record which included first place finishes in the San Saba Basketball League, Cen-Tex Basketball Tournament and the Goldthwaite Tournament. At the beginning of the school year, these girls also participated in the San Saba Fall Basketball League on separate teams.

The 5th/6th grade San Saba Junior Lady Dillos (15-4) will be wrapping up the 2012 season with an appearance at the Lampasas April Showers Basketball Tournament in Lampasas this weekend. The Lady Dillos will tip-off at 10:05am on Saturday morning against Gatesville Excel and then later in the day, the Lady Dillos will take on Austin Lady Magic at 3:30 pm.

Last week the Richland Springs Coyotes competed very well at the District 30 track meet in Kerrville. It was the last district meet for seniors Denim Reeves, Ben VanCleave, and Tra Williams. Others who competed were Chance Bush, Gunner Mann, Thomas Fowler, Trevor Tinney, Patrick Phillips, Ty Mann, Dillan Parker, Jacob Cohn, and Taylor Terry.

Sam Houston State’s Shelby Hardy earned her second individual medalist championship of the 2011-12 season and the third title of her Bearkat career Tuesday, April 3rd. The junior took individual honors at the Houston Baptist Husky Invitational played on the par 72, 6,026-yard course at River-bend Country Club in Sugar Land, Texas.

This past week our varsity baseball team took on and beat two quality opponents to begin the second half of district play. Last Tuesday, we were in Comanche and the game went well.We jumped out to an early 4-0 lead as Luke Cox and JT Mathis each singled in runs and two wild pitches allowed two more runs to score.

April 2nd, San Saba FFA horse judging team went to Coleman and participated in the Panther Creek Judging contest. Out of 58 teams they placed 4th with Russton Ellis being 3rd high point individual and Abby Dellis being 13th high point individual. San Saba ISD was awarded a Texas State Literacy Grant in February. Twenty members of the team traveled to Houston last week to collaboratively work on creating a literacy vision for the San Saba community. Members of the team included San Saba teachers, administrators, and Head Start, Three members from the Region XV Service Center also attended as part of San Saba’s Literacy Team.

San Saba ISD has many long-standing and interesting traditions. How about Rogan Field, what about having the only Armadillo public school mascot in the state of Texas, or the ‘Dilloettes, and of course, we can’t forget SSISD’s RICH tradition of having outstanding tennis players. This week I would like to highlight our tennis coach and tennis program led by Ralph Cox.
