The San Saba City Council conducted a regular monthly meeting Tuesday, March 13th at 6:00 p.m. Mayor, Ken Jordan called the meeting to order announcing a quorum present with all council members present. Jordan welcomed everyone to the meeting including a visitor, Katy Calloway from Dallas, Alderman Charlie Peeler’s niece.

Deb Tolman danced her way into San Saba on Monday, March 12 to deliver her keyhole gardening program to more than 100 people who had assembled at the Civic Center. Wickedly smart, engaging and innovative, Deb used her extensive knowledge, presentation skills and self-effacing humor to captivate the enthusiastic audience.

On Saturday, March 17th, at 6 p.m., Tanner Hawkins, son of Randal Hawkins and Gayla Hawkins both of San Saba, and a member of Troop 55 of the Boy Scouts of America, was honored at the Eagle Court of Honor at the First Methodist Church in San Saba.Jim Childress, Council Committee Member Pecan Valley District, Texas Trails Council, welcomed the approximately 75 people in attendance.

Early Saturday morning the Sheriff’s Office responded to the Bend store for the report of a burglary. Sometime during the early morning hours on Saturday the 17th, an individual or individuals had broken into the back of the store and stolen beer, snuff and several other small items and then even stole part of the door that they had broken into.

Better Business Bureau is alerting consumers of a phone scam in which the caller claims to be from Microsoft. The caller offers to solve a consumer’s computer problems or sell him or her a software license, all in an effort to gain remote control access to the consumer’s computer.Pam Webster called BBB to report she received a phone call from a “Microsoft employee” who told her he had recognized a virus on her computer.

The San Saba River Chapter, Daughters of the Republic of Texas celebrated Texas Honor Days in March with a program entitled "Getting to Know Our Heroes" given by Mr. Thomas Bowden of San Saba. Opening the program by wishing an early happy Texas Independence Day to the members and visitors, Bowden discussed the timeline and events leading to the road to Texas Independence.

As part of a community service project, one of the SSHS mentor groups wants to help out the San Saba City animal shelter. The following list of supplies is needed: 1. Gently used leashes2. Some people who are believed to be Gypsies, posed as "rubbing doctors" robbed an elderly man in Richland Springs of his money. Reading Recommendations: The thing I find most enjoyable these days is reading these wonderful books and contact with readers and workers at Rylander. Last week, Janis Bull, one of the faithful at Rylander brought a book to my house. She challenged me to read just one chapter and go from there.

The Heart of Texas Country Music Association will celebrate its 23rd Anniversary on Friday and Saturday, March 23rd and 24th, and Friday and Saturday, March 30th and 31st in Brady. The festivities will include a Welcome Party on the Friday nights at the Heart of Texas Events Center, an afternoon Matinee Concert at 1:00 PM on the Saturdays followed by a Dance on Saturday night at the Brady Civic Center.

The LanTex film Society presents “Extremely Loud and Terribly Close” at the LanTex this Friday night March 23 at 7:30 and Saturday March 24 at 4:00 and 7:30 . The film will help fund up coming events and film competitions. This very popular and emotionally charged movie involves a nine year old amateur inventor, Francophile as he searches NYC for the lock that matches a mysterious key left by his father, who dies in the World Trade Center on September 11.

Strange things are aloft in the bird world.Endangered whooping cranes flew 2,500 miles from Canada to Texas, where they usually spend the whole winter. Instead, they pecked around for a short time and flew back. In Nebraska, other cranes never left.Some ducks just kept flying south — all the way to Belize in Central America.

Thank you Lord for all of this rain, and it’s good to start off another Sheriffs report with that statement. We have been jumping with Spring Break and man has it been a good one. We have had no major motor vehicle accidents, no shootings, stabbings and or fights out in the county or at least none reported to us.

On the morning of the 13th, Texas DPS Trooper Mark Owens conducted a traffic stop just south of Cherokee. Trooper Owens became suspicious during the stop and called for the Sheriff’s Office K-9 to assist and Sheriff Brown, Chief Deputy Price and K-9 Freddie responded to assist. The K-9 alerted on the vehicle and a search was conducted and a sizable amount of crystal methamphetamine was discovered in the female passenger’s belongings.

The Wallace Creek EE Club met March 15, 2012 at the club house.President Lynn Blankenship called the meeting to order. Secretary Doris Cates read the minutes of the February meeting. The minutes were approved as read. Treasurer, Imogene Hawkins gave the treasurer's report. A thank you card was read from the 4-H Youth Fair.

It appears that we should get rain just about every time we need it the past few months and our countryside surely shows the effect. The pastures & grain patches are fairly well out-grow ing themselves, the Rivers & Creeks are running well, and most of the tanks have run around.

SAN SABA–Receipts totaled 2272 head for the week. The market was very active with stocker steers selling $3 to $4 higher and stocker heifers steady to $1 higher. Feeder steers and heifers sold steady on a limited offering. The packer bulls were $1 to $2 higher with the top bull weighing 2195 lbs.

Anita House Crown, 73, of Independence, MO passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2012 surrounded by close family in her home. Visitation for Anita took place from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at Speaks Suburban Chapel, Independence, MO. The state 2A & under team tennis tournament was completely rained out on March 9-10. We sat in the bus for two days and watched it rain, and did not get one match played. The top four seeds will meet on April 6 in Abilene to play for the state championship.

Back on Thursday, March 8, the Armadillo baseball program was opening spring break by hosting the Mill Pond Classic. Games were played at 11:00, 1:00, 3:00 and 5:00. The eleven o’clock game was a JV game between Goldthwaite and San Saba. Goldthwaite started the scoring with three in the first inning, three more in the second, and four more over the next several innings.

On March 9, 2012, the San Saba Pre-K class visited Millican Pecan Company’s factory to learn about the pecans and make their own pecan pies. “The class is currently learning about shapes and colors and we wanted to teach them a little about pecans and how they grow” said owners Kristen and Winston Millican.

The 2012-2013 school calendar has been approved for the coming school year. The ISD has elected to move away from the Optional Flexible School Year calendar that we have used for the prior two years which meant the calendar was set on 180 student school days. For the coming school year we have adopted a 177 student day calendar which provides for professional development for teachers.
