San Saba Independent School District has been awarded the Texas Literacy Initiative Grant from the Texas Education Agency to improve school readiness and success in the areas of language and literacy. SSISD was one of 30 districts in the state to be awarded the grant statewide. The Freemason of San Saba Lodge NO. 612 will hold their monthly stated meeting Saturday evening, March 3rd. A meal of Mexican food will be provided by the Worshipful Master, Jan K. Huffstetler. Cole and Sarah McDowell are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Macye Catherine McDowell. Macye was born January 11, 2012 at 1:33 a.m. weighing 9.06 lbs. and was 20.25" long. The Llano Band Boosters will show “Joyful Noise” at the LanTex, Friday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, March 3, at 4:00 and 7:30 p.m. The small town of Pecashau, Georgia has fallen on hard times, but the people are counting on the Divinity Church Choir to lift their spirits by winning the National Joyful Noise Competition.

On Wednesday the 22nd, at around 5:30pm, San Saba Sheriffs deputies, City Police, EMS and San Saba Fire Rescue responded to a one vehicle crash on the Old San Saba Highway or CR 204. The vehicle, which had five occupants had been traveling east bound on the old San Saba Highway or CR 204, when it lost control and rolled over.

The Needle Art and Quilt Show will be held on Friday and Sat-urday, March 2nd and 3rd from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Lampasas County Courthouse, downtown Lampasas. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12. A bake sale will be held at the Keystone Square Museum, 303 South Western Street, between 2nd and 3rd Streets.

These are good deeds done without provocation or encouragement from others in order to randomly help someone. I believe I have witnessed this action and feel it is worth sharing with others. I know it has inspired me to do more for others and has filled me with hope that children sometimes take the lead and take action when they see a need.

Well it has been another busy week here in the Sheriff’s office and let’s get right to it with some housekeeping. I want to apologize to Bob from the Bend Store for the article in the paper last week. The way that I wrote it left some to believe that the intoxicated individual arrested out there last week, came from his store.

Saturday night, February 25 the team of Performance Talent Camp sponsored "Search for the Stars Talent Contest" at the San Saba Civic Center. Concessions were provided by the team Fantasy Island.Proceeds in the amount of $1166.00 were donated to The American Cancer Society.

Marble Falls resident Steven Todd has recently announced that he is entering the race to be the next District Attorney by seeking the Republican Party Nomination for the 33rd/424th Judicial District Attorney’s Office. Currently, the Republican primary is scheduled for May 29th, 2012. Sam Oatman, the current District Attorney is retiring after 28 years of service.

Matthew Joe Lopez and Mariah Cromeans, both currently of San Saba were arrested on Friday the 24th and charged with Possession of a Controlled substance (methamphetamine) > one gram but < four grams with intent to deliver. Sheriff Brown stated that while investigating a disturbance reported by management at the Executive Inn, the two suspects were located inside the hotel room and as a result of the investigation; both were arrested and charged with the selling of methamphetamine.

Carl Gray (Pete) Hamrick, Jr., of Belton, Texas, (formerly of San Saba, Texas) passed away on Monday, February 20, 2012, in Park Place Manor, Belton, Texas. Mr. Hamrick was born in San Saba on October 25, 1925, to Carl Gray Hamrick, Sr. and Maude Florence Bowers Hamrick. Pete spent his childhood in San Saba County and joined the Navy during World War II when he turned 18.

Clarence W. Vaughn, 94, passed away on February 17, 2012. He was born to Willie and Flora Vaughn on March 30, 1917, in Bell County. He lived most of his life in San Saba County where he worked on the Deep Creek Ranch and then Leonard’s Farm. He worked on the Leonard’s Farms for 48 years after which he retired at the age of 85.

Edward J. Gonzales was born June 30, 1943 in San Saba, TX to Mr. Cruz Gonzales and Ms. Cruz Cardenas and passed away February 22, 2012 in Seagoville, TX. Edward was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Josefina Elizondo and Herminia Gloria. He is survived by his sons, Edward Gonzales, Jr.

James M. “Jim” Havel, age 67 of Hunt, passed away Monday, February 20, 2012 in a Kerrville hospital. He was born August 3, 1944 in West, TX to Adolf and Dorothy Havel. Jim was a retired Game Warden and an Air Force Veteran. He served as a Game Warden in Matagorda Island, Kerr County, and in San Saba with Jack Reynolds.

Rotarians Kevin Shahan and Dora Miller presented the books, and Mrs. Miller also shared some fun “dictionary facts” with students. The San Saba 5th/6th Junior Lady Dillos wrapped up the 2012 SSYB League Championship by going undefeated in league play, 6-0. The Lady Dillos are averaging 25.8 points per game while holding their opponents to less than 8 points per game. The San Saba Armadillo baseball team kicked off their season by playing five games spread out over six days. They won one more than they lost giving them a 3-2 record to start the season.Last Monday, February 20, the Dillos hosted the Brady Bulldogs under some damp conditions due to appreciated heavy rainfall.

The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met February 23, 2012 on a beautiful day for play day. The ladies played heads up golf, awarding prizes to First Low Gross - Sandee Hartley, Second Low Gross - Anita Miles and First Low Net - Hattie Rogers and Second Low Net - Dorothy Sterner.

It was a short week for Cherokee students. Students and staff enjoyed a four-day weekend as Cherokee elected not to take a full week off for Spring Break this year. Some like the days being spread throughout the spring semester, while others aren’t used to not having a full week off.

The next GED Test at Gatesville High School will be given March 13 and 14, 2012. Individuals wishing to take the test in March must complete registration sometime between 5 and 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7. Be prepared to spend 30 minutes to an hour when registering. You need to bring with you a current state or federal photo ID, Social Security Card, and $75 fee for the test.

This past week the San Saba High School tennis team played three 3A schools in team tennis matches in preparation for the region V team tennis tournament on March 2-3. San Saba played Llano, Bellville, and Waco Robinson. On Monday, February 20, the tennis team defeated Llano 20 to 2.

The San Saba ISD Parent Academy is nearly here! There will be some great information available. The hamburger and hotdog meal will start at 5:00pm in both cafeterias. At 5:30pm in each cafeteria, information about how parents can be involved in their children’s education will be shared. There will be a number of resources available for parents to take with them.

By the time this article comes out in the San Saba News, SSISD will only have fifty-six (56) school days left. To put it in our students’ terms, OMG! Oh my gosh, is right! I can’t believe that the school year has flown by so quickly. These last 56 days will be filled with so much it will be hard to keep focused on what is most important.
