The San Saba City Council held a Public Hearing prior to the regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, February 14th at 6 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. Mayor, Ken Jordan called the meeting to order, announced a quorum present with no one absent, and welcomed everyone to the Public Hearing.

The Dilloettes competed at the Danceline North Texas Regional Contest this past weekend in Lampasas. They received a Division 1 First Place Trophy for their team kick routine.We also had 3 members compete in a Technique Challenge. Erin Edmondson placed in the top 5 for Leaps, Kayla Kutin placed in the top 5 for Kicks, and Valarie Salinas placed 2nd in the Toe Touch Challenge.

The FCS Committee and the Extension Education Council invite the public to a Lunch and Learn on Wednesday February 29th, 12 noon to 1 p.m. at the Civic Center. This month’s topic is the sheriff election county forum. The two candidates, Allen Brown and Steve Boyd, will each be given 10 minutes for remarks.

A regular meeting of the Board of Trustees of San Saba ISD was held Monday, February 13th beginning at 6 p.m. in the Central Administration Office. President, Kim Kirk, called the meeting to order, welcomed everyone to the meeting and established a quorum present with Trustee, Susie Nettleship absent, following by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags.

On Monday, February 13th, approximately 50 people gathered at Rylander Memorial Library at 2 p.m. to meet and hear the award-winning author of fifty books, W.C. Jameson. Lynn Blankenship, President of Friends of Rylander Memorial Library, opened the meeting and Carol Littlefield introduced the speaker. W.C. was accompanied by his wife, Laurie Wagner Buyer, who has won numerous national awards for her poetry and writing.

Sylvia Juarez and Charlotte Holland were hostesses Tuesday, February 14th at Commie's Tacos. Mrs. and Mrs. Valdez gave an interesting talk and pictures of their trip to Africa. The hostesses gave each of us a red rose and we exchanged Secret Pal gifts. We had a delicious meal of Chicken Spaghetti with Strawberry Shortcake for dessert.

Last summer, everyone with a garden struggled with the heat and drought. Although the drought may have wreaked havoc on our plants, most of us emerged with a strong resolve to find new ways to overcome the challenging Central Texas climate. Enter Dr. Deb Tolman (aka Dr. Deb). Dr. Deb will visit San Saba on Monday, March 12 to make two presentations on her keyhole gardening concept.

On February 15, 2012 members and guests of the four San Saba County Extension Educational Clubs convened at Rylander Memorial Library for a special presentation of photo slides taken by Mr. Terry Fischer. Mr. Fischer’s extraordinary photography features the subtle, often overlooked beauty that surrounds us. His photos illustrate in minute detail the color and features of the tiniest of insects and flowers that abound in our yards and pastures.

Thank you Lord for the wonderful rain we all received this week. I was really glad to see all the wet stuff falling from the sky and to be able to report that we had no accidents during this weather. We did have just a few issues with high water but they were handled by the city and the commissioners as quickly as they were reported.I need to clear up the situation involving the posting of the trespassing signs now posted around the jail.

Thanks to generous donations from the community, Shared Blessings (Agape House) continues to impact the San Saba area. Besides providing clothing, shoes, house-wares, books and toys at very low prices, this outreach of The Father's House also contributes to our town's "green" effort. Old t-shirts are bundled and sold for cleaning purposes and outdated or worn books as well as boxes are recycled.

The Sheriff's Office responded to a man lying in the bar ditch out past the Bend Store during the rain storm on Saturday night, the 18th. A male suspect claiming to be Billy Pierce was located and then was arrested for Public Intoxication and transported to the San Saba County Jail.

Looks like we’ve already made it past the middle of the President’s & Valentine’s month. We had some more moisture, and still looking for some pretty weather to get going in the yard & garden. I did see a couple of Peach trees at the ol’ Teachridge at Algerita this past week, so spring might be breaking a bit early.

Receipts totaled 722 head for the week. The market remains strong with packer bulls $3 higher with the top bull at $106.00 and packer cows selling $3 higher with the top cow at $92.00. All classes of calves and yearlings sold steady in an active market. Stocker cows and pairs are selling in good demand with pairs up $200 and bred cows $175 higher.

Aubrey Lee Spence 86, of San Saba, Texas went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 15, 2012. Aubrey was born on October 17, 1925 near Lexington, Texas to Oras and Alma Spence. He served with distinction during WWII onboard the USS Franklin (CV- 13), receiving the Purple Heart for action on March 19, 1945.

Clarence W. Vaughn, 94, passed away on February 17, 2012. He was born to Willie and Flora Vaughn on March 30, 1917, in Bell County. He lived most of his life in San Saba County where he worked on the Deep Creek Ranch and then Leonard’s Farm. He worked on the Leonard’s Farms for 48 years after which he retired at the age of 85.

Jeffery Frank Peel 25, of San Saba passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2012. Jeffery was born on January 29, 1987 in Fort Hood, Texas to Barbara “Bobbie” Diane Peel. Maldon Norris, age 81, of San Saba passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2012. Maldon was born on June 26, 1930 to Elmer and Alice Norris. He was a rancher and a lifetime resident of San Saba County. Maldon was a member of San Saba’s First Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon.

Raymond W. Patton, 81, of San Saba passed away on Monday, February 13, 2012 at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas. He was born on September 21, 1930 to Zach and Sudie Patton in San Saba, Texas. On June 6, 2010, Boots married Bertha Bryant, and they resided in San Saba.Raymond, affectionately known as Boots by everyone, never met a stranger.

The Armadillo Basketball team hosted Comanche for their final game of the season on Feb. 14. Comanche came into this game needing a win to assure them of the third place playoff spot. It was an exciting one from start to finish! Both teams traded baskets in the first quarter and scored 16 pts each.

The Indians finished their basketball season last Tuesday with a very close game against Lometa. Spring sport practices are now going full force. Schedules will be sent out soon for the various meets. On Wednesday, FFA officers and members traveled to Austin to attend the premiere of Deep in the Heart, the true story of Richard Wallrath, whose passion for FFA and 4-H has helped many students.

The San Saba Tennis Team this past week played in the JV Fredericksburg Tournament on Thursday and the Varsity Tournament in Waco scheduled for Friday was rained out. The JV players that went to Fredericks-burg were Emiliano Zapata, Marissa Anaya, Mikayla Eden, A. J. Gamboa, Allison Christian, and Allison Nettleship.

Much has happened since a report was given in January. We have completed the bond sale and the proceeds are in the Lonestar Investment Pool, purchased some additional property, streets have been closed to make certain the campuses are secure, plans for the renovation of the classrooms in the high school have been submitted to TEA, survey work and soil testing has been completed, and we have hired a construction manager.

The JV boys basketball team finished their season on Monday February 13th. The boys hosted Comanche, and won that game by the score of 51-33. San Saba ISD has spent a great deal of time studying the impact of the inclusion of the end-of- course STAAR Exams on grade point averages and course credit. The ISD convened a group of high school teachers, school board members, middle school teachers, administrators and counselor to study the implementation and possible impact of the EOC’s on our students.
