The San Saba County Commissioners Court was held Monday, February 13th at 9 a.m. in the County Judge’s Chambers. County Judge, Byron Theodosis called the Court to Order and welcomed everyone. Commissioner, Rickey Lusty, gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags.Judge Theodosis informed the Court that the county has received an Emergency Funds Award from the Texas Historical Commission.

This past Saturday morning was routine as usual. Richard Harkey was headed to his Gideon Men’s Prayer breakfast at the Cactus, as he has done for many years.Also, starting their day were Ramiro and Rojelio Rocha, volunteer firefighters for San Saba and their cousin, Jaime Rocha. All worked at Hill Country Ford in Goldthwaite.It was around 6:30a.m.

In April 2011 the Texas Ranger Division of the Texas Department of Public Safety received information that a former San Saba funeral home director may have been selling prepaid funeral contracts without proper authorization and utilizing the premiums received from customers for his own benefit. The local San Saba Rotary Club recently sponsored students to attend RYLA. RYLA - ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARD CONFERENCE is a wonderful opportunity for high school students to meet other high school students from across the state of Texas and share their past leadership experiences and learn more about leadership and service.

Richland Springs High School has cast their competition UIL, One Act Play for the 2012 season. Starring in Steel Magnolias will be Sara Hedley, senior, as M’Lynn; Katelynn Teel, junior, as Shelby; Brooklyn McGinty, junior, as Ouiser; Brooke Vaughn, sophomore, as Truvy; DeAnna Grady, sophomore, as Annelle; and Melanie Hedley, sophomore, as Clairee.

I apologize to you for having to, FOR THIS ELECTION ONLY, DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY 2012, close the polling places in Richland Springs, Cherokee and Bend and have only one polling place at the Arrowhead Bank, 301 E. Wallace, San Saba, TX.At the last primary, 2010, there was no interest in Cherokee, in fact I had to use people from San Saba to man the polling place.

Bill Lindemann to Speak Tuesday, February 21, 2012
William L. “Bill” Lindemann will be the featured speaker on Tuesday, February 21 at the San Saba Bird & Nature Club meeting beginning at 7 p.m. at the San Saba Civic Center. Bill was born on October 12, 1937, in Gonzales County, Texas. He graduated Gonzales High School in 1955 before leaving for the University of Texas where he graduated (BS-60, MA-63) in geology.

What a wonderful gift! On Tuesday, February 7, 2012, the hostesses for the monthly meeting prepared a bountiful and beautiful Colonial Tea. It was a glorious day – another gift, unseasonably warm and clear for February – as eleven guests and twenty-five members gathered at 11 a.m. at the clubhouse in Mill Pond Park.

Debbie and Keith Shahan of San Saba, along with Dixie and Steve Claybrook, and Kent Brown of Salt Lake City, Utah, are pleased to announce the engagement of their children, Jason James Shahan and Desiree Flint, both of Lubbock Texas. Jason is a 2000 graduate of San Saba High School and a 2005 graduate of Texas Tech University currently employed by Lubbock ISD, teaching and coaching at Coronado High School.

Residents living in and around the San Saba, Texas community can be screened to reduce their risk of having a stroke or bone fracture. San Saba Civic Center will host Life Line Screening on 3/1/2012. The site is located at 705 East Wallace Street in San Saba. Heino Erichsen from The Woodlands, TX, participated in a Life Line Screening event in January of 2009 and learned that he had an abdominal aortic aneurysm and a blockage in his carotid artery.

Our Historic LanTex Theater has been entertaining Llano movie goers since 1927 starting with silent films. Many small town theaters have been torn down or do not offer movies any more. The City of Llano is very fortunate in having retained ownership of this anchor in the community. Annie Laura Amthor Davis, age 93, slipped peacefully from this life on Friday, February 10, 2012 in Marble Falls, Texas. Ann was the daughter of George Marcus Amthor and Clara Kelly Amthor and was born August 14, 1918 in San Saba, Texas. She spent her youth on the A.H.Kelly Ranch with her grandmother Laura Harrison Kelly and her aunt, Minnie Kelly.

Jeanette Lee Lewis, 67 of Llano, Texas passed away Thursday, February 9, 2012. She was born April 18, 1944 to Russell Jones and Dorothy Lee (Ivey) Jones in Orange, California. Jeanette married Glenn Lewis January 17, 1980 in Llano, Texas. Mrs. Lewis worked as an abstractor for Moursund Law offices and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mason, Texas since 1965.

Joe Fred Flores, age 53, of San Saba passed away on Monday, February 6, 2012, at a local nursing home. He was born on May 23, 1958 to Adolfo Flores and Teckla Ramos. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in San Saba. Joe was an avid outdoorsman who loved camping and spending time with his family.

Linda Mixon, 61, of San Saba, passed away Friday, February 10, 2012. She was born July 16, 1950 to William and Virginia Crow in Pasadena, Texas. Linda married Christian Mixon on January 1, 1998 in Los Angeles, California.Before moving to San Saba, Linda worked as an actress and in film production in Los Angeles and New Orleans.

Maldon Norris 81, of San Saba passed away on Sunday February12, 2012. Maldon was born on June 26, 1930 to Elmer and Alice Norris. Maldon was a rancher and a lifetime resident of San Saba County. Maldon was a Deacon and a member of San Saba’s First Baptist Church. He was also a longtime member of The Property Owners Association of San Saba County.

Mary E. Stewart, 98, of San Saba passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2012. Mary was born December 14, 1913 in St. Louis, Missouri, to Horace and Kate Smith. Mary was an avid reader and loved to write. She wrote poems and stories for old and young alike. At the age of 8, she had a job writing stories for her uncle for which he paid her 5 cents a story.

Mary Nell Millican Thames claimed the promise of her baptism on Sunday, February 12, 2012 in San Antonio, Texas after a long and fulfilling life of tremendous courage, having seen no barrier as insurmountable. She was born on March 20, 1936 in a ranch house at Nix Community, Lampasas County, Texas to Thelma and VP Millican.

Maxine S. Miffleton 87, of San Saba passed away on Monday, February 13, 2012. Maxine was born on January 25, 1925 to John and Eula Ann Smith. Maxine was a business owner and in retail sales. Maxine was a lifelong member of the San Saba Garden Club and a honorary Master Gardener.

Olga Cerepaka, 88, passed away on February 10, 2012. She was born on June 1, 1923, in Winnipeg, Canada, to Joseph and Anastacia Zevitski. Olga was married to Paul Cerepaka. She moved from Canada to the United States in the 1940’s where she became a naturalized citizen living most of her life in Chicago.

Wenceslao Bonilla Torrez of Goldthwaite, TX passed away February 5, 2012 in Temple, TX. He was 81 years old. Wenceslao was born in San Pedro Limon, Mexico to Cosme Bonilla and Maria Moises Torrez. The 7th/8th Grade B team Lady Dillos had a tremendous season. We saw a huge amount of improvement in so many of the girls. Most of them had never played before season, but by the time the year was over, you couldn’t even tell for many of them. Thank you girls for all your hard work and dedication this season.

Wow, what a season it has been for the 7th Grade Lady Dillos! I must say, they must be extremely proud of themselves, as I know there are a lot of people who are extremely proud of them! We ended the season as DISTRICT CO-CHAMPIONS and a record of 14-3!!!!

Senior males must register with the Selective Service at their 18th birthday to be eligible for student loans and grants.The University Interscholastic League released the 2012-14 Football District Alignment for Conference 1A 6-Man Division 2.

Erin Edmondson of San Saba, Texas, is the newest member of the Mustang Heritage Founda-tion’s Youth Employment Program. Edmondson is taking part in the 12-week work-from-school program. Edmondson and the rest of her class joined the Mustang Heritage Foundation’s Youth Employment Program together. Edmondson is interested in Mustangs and wants to get the word out about them.

The San Saba Sheriff's Office will be challenging the Cherokee ISD staff Friday night, February 17th at 6:30 p.m. in a basketball game at the Cherokee Gym to benefit the Athletic Booster Club.The sheriff's deputies and jailer/dispatchers will put together a squad and hope to make a game of it.Sheriff Brown stated, "I am proud of my staff and the Cherokee ISD staff who are working together for a good cause, and we look forward to beating them soundly."

The Lady Dillos finished up their season with an exciting win over the Coleman Lady Bluecats on Tuesday night. The Lady Dillos traveled to Coleman wanting to end their season on a good note and send our only senior (Ashley Pulatie) out with a win. The Lady Dillos did just that by defeating Coleman 40-31.

Marisela Zapata of San Saba, Texas, is the newest member of the Mustang Heritage Foundation’s Youth Employment Program. Zapata is taking part in the 12-week work-from-school program."For this program I will learn the history of Mustang’s and why there is such an awareness with them. I will make a presentation to elementary students as well as an adult group of people informing them on the history, their problems, and how we can help.

STATE BOUND! Congratulations to Sam Martin and Bobby Hamilton, who will be representing Cherokee at the State CX Debate competition in Austin on March 12-13. Sam received the district’s Best Speaker award and Bobby got 2nd best speaker. The young men also competed in a CX debate in Lampasas this past Saturday, coming away with another 2nd place trophy!Recently, Senior Ryan Breadner and Junior Stephen Austermann traveled Round Rock to attend the International Bowl.

Should there be differences in the instructional preparation for students in classrooms that will be taking the State Test of Academic Achievement and Readiness (STAAR) as opposed to Test of Academic Knowledge and Skills (TAKS)? Once again, the TEKS will be assessed on both; however, the STAAR system, which includes EOCS (End of Course Exams) will test students at a higher cognitive level.

The JV boys basketball team will have finished their season by the time of this printing. This past week the JV boys had a good week, winning both their district ballgames on the road. On Tuesday evening, February 7th our boy’s teams traveled to Coleman to take on the Bluecats.

Last week was a busy week for the San Saba Tennis Team as the JV played in the Llano JV Tournament on Thursday, the Varsity played in the Llano Varsity Tournament on Friday. Teams playing in the Llano Tournament were Llano, Liberty Hill, Junction, Canyon Lake, San Saba, San Antonio Memorial, Early, Hutto, San Antonio Edgewood, Fredericksburg and Faith Academy.
