The following edited excerpts are from the Region 7 2011 Summary of Confirmed Rabies Cases received January 23, 2012. This information was distributed by Beverlee E. Nix, DVM, MPH, Zoonosis Control Veterinarian, Texas Department of State Health Services. The report was edited by Scott Meador, Animal Control Officer for the City of San Saba. There were 439 laboratory-confirmed animal rabies cases reported from the 30-county area of Health Service Region 7 (HSR7) during 2011.

The San Saba County Friends of the NRA closed out a successful 2011 by raising more than ten thousand dollars for the furtherance of shooting sports in Texas and the Nation. Half of this money will remain in Texas and will be distributed through grants to youth sporting and education programs including the 4-H and FFA programs and the Boy Scouts.

Well it is 5:14 a. m. on Monday morning and under normal circumstances I would already have my article for the paper written and ready to email to the paper but when should I ever expect life or circumstances to be normal around this house? A few weeks ago I talked about my computer crashing and the not so magic extended warranty buy some stores sell you.

When a person has been outside on a hot, dry, dusty day, they usually become thirsty. On a day that is very hot a glass of cool water or tea refreshes like nothing else. Most of us have experienced this in our lives. Our mouth becomes so dry we think we have cotton in them soaking up all the moisture.

After the good rains last week and the warm sunny days we are having, the countryside is really getting pretty and green. I wonder if the Algerita bushes are blooming, yet. We are kicking off another new month starting with Ground Hog Day on the 2nd. Maybe old Phil won’t see his shadow and spring will be just around the corner.

We are in for a beautiful Spring full of those precious wildflowers that we love so very much. The rains in late December and the rains this week in late January were just in time to insure that we would have a gorgeous Spring with a big splash of color.

One of the news shows on Sunday morning was addressing a new trend for the titles of all sorts of books in your local bookstore to contain curse words. I actually own one of the books they showed, a knitting book entitled “Stitch and ***.” The surprising thing is that some of the books they were showing had much worse words in the titles of what appeared to be children’s books.

The rain came again last week leaving over two inches of rain around the Bend. It came at a good time and was very much appreciated. The weather has been something else it seems to go up come down and go back up again. In the 70’s down in the 50’s and of course colder at night with some heavy frost in the mornings.

My neighbor called and asked if I saw the cow he left in my pens by the highway. My wife and I and grandchildren were dressed and on our way for a evening swim at the windmill. I had on flip flops and bathing suit, anyway to the pens I went.

My life and conversations are full of “Glenn”. That little fellow is keeping me busy. The column may be a bit short this week. It seems somewhere in my puppy play, I have strained a wrist. I can’t even begin to think how, but it is extremely uncomfortable. He is one smart little fellow.

The Capital Farm Credit Board of Directors recently declared a total patronage refund of $126.6 million. Of that, $38.4 million is in cash to be paid to stockholders in March, and $88.2 million is in the form of allocated equities and is eligible for future cash payouts.The refund, based on 2011 earnings, continues a long-standing tradition by the rural lending cooperative of sharing its earnings with its customers.

San Saba County was declared eligible for Farm Service Agency (FSA) disaster emergency loans on January 3, 2012. Generally, that means that farmers who have lost at least 30 percent of their production due to damages and losses caused by drought, excessive heat, high winds and wildfires beginning January 1, 2011 and continuing, are eligible for FSA loans.

Receipts totaled 1249 head for the week. Receipts were lighter today at 510 head due to the good rains that fell over the area on Tuesday and Wednesday. The market was strong with stocker steers $2 higher and stocker heifers steady to $1 higher. Feeder steers were steady to $1 higher and heifers were $3 higher.

The Texas Brigades is gearing up for the newest addition to their family, the Waterfowl Brigade. The camp will start this summer near Palestine, Texas. It will focus on teaching youth about managing land to benefit various waterfowl species and the importance of wetlands management. The Texas Brigades hosts five camps each summer: two Buckskin Brigades, two Bobwhite Brigades, Bass Brigade and its newest addition, Waterfowl Brigade.

Barbara Adams Heimann, age 71, of San Saba, passed away on January 23, 2012. Barbara was born on July 24, 1940 to Arthur and Alma Wooley in San Antonio, Texas. She was a long-time resident of San Saba County where she worked for awhile at Eventide Nursing Home. Barbara will best be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

William Dean Wise, “Bill” as he’s known to us, arrived kicking and screaming on February 19, 1957, and passed quietly from this life December 27, 2011, at the all too young age of 54. On Jan. 24, the Dillos hosted the Early Longhorns. This was an exciting game and it came down to the wire. In the first quarter, the Longhorns started out started out hot from the 3-point line hitting one on their first three possessions and took a 9-2 lead. We handled their press pretty good and took a 20-15 lead after one quarter.

Expect a late start and finish for the 2012-2013 school year at Richland Springs Independent School District. The school board will vote February 9th to approve school starting Aug. 27 and ending May 31, 2013, after Memorial Day. The current school year began Aug. 22 and will end May 25.

Last week was another full week of activities in Cherokee! On Monday, the junior high traveled to Rochelle. Both teams went into overtime and, unfortunately, both teams lost. On Friday, our varsity teams hosted Lohn. The Lady Indians came out strong and never wavered, winning the game convincingly. The Indians followed suit, defeating the Eagles.

The next GED Test at Gatesville High School will be given February 7 and 8, 2012. Individuals wishing to take the test in February must complete registration sometime between 5 and 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 1. Be prepared to spend 30 minutes to an hour when registering. You need to bring with you a current state or federal photo ID, Social Security Card, and $75 fee for the test.

The JV Boys had two good games this past week. This past Tuesday evening, the JV boys hosted the Early Longhorns. The Early JV gave the JV Dillos their only district loss this season back on New Years Eve, winning that game by 12. This time San Saba lead pretty much the whole way, surviving a late rally by the JV Longhorns.
