The kick-off for the San Saba Relay for Life benefiting the American Cancer Society will be on Thursday, February 2, 2012 at the Church of Christ Fellowship Hall on the corner of Wallace and Third streets in San Saba.The complimentary dinner will be provided to anyone who wants to become involved in the 2012 Relay for Life.

Approximately 100 people attended the Community Celebration honoring the Richland Springs Coyotes 5th State Championship at the Stagecoach Restaurant at 6 p.m. Wednesday, January 11th. RSISD Superintendent, Don Fowler, opened the celebration with comments of the accomplishments of the football team. Mayor Pro-tem, Frank Pierce read a Proclamation from the City of Richland Springs, listing the Coyotes accomplishments and proclaiming the month of January, 2012 as Richland Springs Coyote month.

It is Monday morning, January 16, a tad after six in the morning and under normal circumstance I would be preparing to email my article for my column to this weeks edition of the paper, obviously this week things are a bit different. I suppose the most glaring difference is I haven't yet written an article.

Fiber is a word that we hear in the news a lot these days. My Plate even mentions fiber in an indirect way when it says make half your grains whole. Whole grains have more fiber in them. *Why do you need fiber? It helps to regulate bowel movements, makes us feel full, lowers blood sugar and cholesterol and may reduce the risk of getting certain types of cancer.

Recently I received an invitation to a dinner. It is a dinner that many people have been invited to attend. When a person receives an invitation they may either accept or decline. It is their choice. Usually we accept if we know the person well, have the time and know the cook is going to have something scrumptious to eat.

We are enjoying some beautiful, warm days. I could do without the wind and we would always welcome some more rain. The Busy Bee quilters met last Tuesday at Irene Hammett’s house. Joining Irene were, Fay and Gloria Lusty, Marilyn Miller and Carol Orr. The ladies worked on a quilt for Irene and I believe they will continue on it next month.

I ran into a friend today in the grocery store parking lot and she was commenting on this column. She said she loved to read it every week because “that person” was the person she wanted to be. I told her that I wanted to be the person in this column, too, and I write it!!

As the annual Christmas Bird Counts (CBCs) have been conducted for over a hundred years in late December and early January, participating birders know that adverse weather can affect the results of any count. Frigid cold, rain, snow, wind and a combination of these weather events can make birding difficult and produce low counts of observed birds.

Congratulation goes out to John Brooks and sister Catherine Hicks. John showed the champion Yorkshire gilt award, the reserve champion cross breed barrow and was named the senior market showmanship. He also exhibited overall a reserve champion market hog, which also took the crossbreed reserve champion breed barrow, the reserve champion for cross breed and champion for all show, reserve champion for cross bred gilt.

Hunting season is over. I know because hundreds of trucks pulling ATVs passed me on the highway. The economic crunch has not quite hit the hunting industry. That is a wonderful thing for this area! So many businesses rely on this annual influx of buying. That thought of course, brings to mind the Dr.Pepper mess in Dublin.

Recently my wife called and asked me if I would pick up a prescription for her while I was in town. I was near a Pharmacy that we have never used before but I went in and ordered her medicine. Well the girl gave me the brand her Pharmacy carries and it was in a different colored box and had a different name.

The Boy Scouts of Texas Trails Council kicked off their San Saba County Fund Drive on Thursday January 12, with a breakfast at Pepperbelly’s Restaurant. Tanner Hawkins a San Saba High School senior spoke to the group about what it means to him to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.

The San Saba Citizens Rabies Task Force met Wednesday, December 28th and January 5th to discuss various options regarding the containment and reduction of the potential spread of rabies into the feral cat communities within the City. The Task Force findings and recommendations were presented during the January 10th City Council meeting by Scott Meador Animal Control Officer for San Saba.

Next Thursday, January 26th, Fellowship of Christian Women are making plans to begin another year. We will be gathering at the Presbyterian Church in the downstairs fellowship hall. Beginning at 11:30 a.m. the luncheon will feature, Winter Casseroles and Desserts, treating our ladies in their 50’s. Other ages are encouraged to look for recipes of casseroles or desserts and plan to bring the covered dishes to share around the serving tables.

Members of the San Saba Garden Club gathered at the clubhouse in Mill Pond Park at 11 a.m. on January 3, 2012, for their regular monthly meeting. This meeting was special in that it was the celebration of the 76th anniversary of the founding of the club. On the first Friday of January 1936, a large group of ladies gathered on the third floor of the courthouse to discuss the organization of a garden club in San Saba.

Floyd Huffman, 74, passed away on January 12, 2012, at his home in San Saba. He was born on March 29, 1937 to Floyd and Dorothy Huffman in Ronoke, Texas. He lived in San Saba County for the last 40 years and worked as a ranch manager on Barfield Ranch .

James Morris Henderson was born on November 5, 1919 in the home of his grandparents, Juda C. and Ellen Redford Winkler on Willow Creek near Llano, Texas. His parents were James Horace Henderson and Imogene Redford Winkler. He passed away on January 11, 2012 at Seton/Kyle Hospital in Kyle, Texas following a brief illness.

Johnny Ray Watson, 58, passed away at his home in San Saba on January 14, 2012. He was born on May 28, 1953, to B.J. and Pearly Watson. Johnny spent most of his life in San Saba except for the time he was in the army. He married Debra Taff on February 25, 1974.

Linda Gatliff Russell, 69, passed away on January 10, 2012, at St. David’s Hospital in Georgetown. She was born on January 8, 1943, to David Edward and Gertie Gatliff in San Saba, Texas. Linda married T.C. (Rusty) Russell on July 6, 1961. Because he was in the military, they traveled extensively during their life time.

Stoney Lee Crain, 82, of Denver City, passed away Sunday, January 8, 2012 in Denver City, Texas.Funeral services were conducted Thursday, January 12, 2012, at 2:00 P.M. in the Assembly of God Church in San Saba, Texas. On Jan. 10, the Armadillo basketball team traveled to Hamilton. After one quarter of play the Dillos trailed 10-6. In the second quarter the Dillos would reduce Hamilton’s lead to one at the half, going in at half d own 15-16. In the third quarter we went cold on the shooting end and only scored 3 points to Hamilton’s 11 and Hamilton took a third quarter lead of 27-18.

The San Saba County Stock Show will be Friday, January 20th. There will be an early release at 12:55 on Thursday, January 19, 2012, with no school on the 20th. Everyone is invited to the Youth Fair at the Civic Center to view student academic entries in this year’s event.

Participants entering the Food Division have an opportunity to make a little money at this year’s Youth Fair. They can sell their entries. First, second and third places can be sold at a minimum of $10.00. Fourth, Fifth and participant entries can be sold at a minimum of $5.00. Purchasers can exceed the minimum price if they so desire.

Receipts totaled 3345 head for the week. The market was very active and demand strong. After last week’s $5 to $10 increase on the stocker steers and heifers, we saw another $2 to $3 increase this week with another quality set of calves being offered. Feeder steers and heifers were steady after last week’s $5 to $10 increase.

The Lady Dillos picked up two big district wins this past week. First up, the Lady Dillos traveled to Hamilton on Tuesday to face the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Dillos started off well and held a 9-5 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. However, Hamilton would take a four point lead into halftime and would keep the lead for the majority of the game.

It’s a busy time of year around here! So much is going on and students are headed in all directions with school and extracurricular events. On Monday, the junior high hosted Lometa. On Tuesday, the varsity hosted Menard. On Thursday, 1/19, students will be released at 12:30 in order to get their items and/or animals to the stock show grounds.

On January 9th, our teams traveled to Hamilton. The JV boys won their game by the score of 40-23. Scoring for the Dillos: Welch (6), Ellis (1), Vega (4), Zepeda (2), Brown (18), Lindsey (6), new student /athlete Marcus Sterling (2), and Hardman (1).On Friday the 13th, the JV Dillos probably played their best game as a team of the year.

Central Texas Telephone Cooperative, Inc. sponsors an Essay Contest every year for 11th graders across the Cooperative’s service area. The title of the essay is “How Telecommunications Affect My Life in Rural Texas”. Cheyenne Tharp from Richland Springs High School won first place which is an all-expense paid trip to Washington DC.
