The 1st quarter San Saba County/Scott & White Blood Drive for 2012 will be held next Tuesday January 17th from 1-6pm on the east side of the courthouse. This months theme is ‘DONORS ROCK’. The San Saba County Commissioners Court met on Monday, January 9th at 9:00 a.m. in the County Judge’s chambers. County Judge, Byron Theodosis, called the meeting to order, and welcomed everyone to the court. Commissioner Rickey Lusty gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags.On the agenda were the following Special Action Items: 1.

A Community Celebration honoring the Coyotes 5th State Championship will be held at the Stagecoach Restaurant (Downtown Richland Springs) at 6:00 p.m, Wednesday, January 11th. Everyone is invited! There is no planned meal, but it is eat on your own. Judge Byron Theodosis and Ricky Lusty will present the County Commissioner’s Proclamation.

The Rotary Club of San Saba has recently inducted two new members. David Butler was inducted as Retail Manager for the Alco Store. Leigh Ann Glaze was inducted representing the San Saba ISD Administration. Both new members have been participating in Rotary activities for several months prior to their inductions.

Local State Farm Agent Mike Thomas presents Angela Miller with her new Kindle Fire. Angela was the winner of the new e-reader that was given away by Mike. Persons attending the San Saba Chamber of Commerce Christmas Parade and Christmas on the Square were given the opportunity to register for the drawing.

Casey and Stephanie Hibler are proud to announce the birth of their daughter Hazel Louise Hibler. Hazel was born at home, under the watchful eyes of the Lord, midwife Betsy Robinett, and student midwife Tori Stewart, on the morning of December 15th 2011 at 3:36am. Present to welcome Hazel into this world were daddy (Casey Hibler III), Mamaw (Frances Hibler), sister (Kyla Hibler) and brother (Bubba Hibler).

Clayton Jordan and Laura Rossi are to be wed on April 14th, 2012. Clayton is a graduate of Texas Tech University as a chemical engineer and is employed by Kimberly Clark in Paris, Texas. He grew up in San Saba. Laura is from San Saba and recently received her certification as a pharmacy technician and is planning on pursuing a career in nursing.

The Llano Country Opry will stage two shows on Saturday, January 14, at the Lantex Theater in downtown Llano. The matinee show begins at 2:30 PM and the evening performance will start at 7:30 PM. Country Music Hall of Famer Little Jimmy Dickens, Johnny Bush, Georgette Jones and Bobby Lewis will all be featured in this star studded show.Admission is $15.00 each and tickets are on sale at the Llano Chamber of Commerce, Lively Computers in Kingsland and KNEL Radio in Brady.

Natalie Reeves, MS, LPC-S, LCPAA has been selected as Texas State Director for The Bair Foundation Children and Family Ministry, a non-profit, Christian organization serving over 5,000 foster youth and families in-crisis nationally. Before being promoted, Natalie was one of four Regional Directors for The Bair Foundation in the state of Texas.

The Sharon Club met Tuesday, January 3rd at The Father's House with Oralia Huron as hostess and Dorothy Gage as co-hostess. Donna Blossman gave a talk on "Mission San Saba", how it started and showed pictures of each place that has been done. Eight in all, a very worthy project.

Billie Bub McCoury went to sleep in Christ at the age of 79 on January 5, 2012, in Temple, Texas. Billie Bub was born on January 6, 1932 to James Maynard McCoury and Juanita Keeney McCoury in Chappel, Texas. Billie Bub was a 1949 graduate of San Saba High School.

Casey J. Weldon, Jr., 69 of Alba, TX passed away Sunday, January 1, 2012, at his residence.Casey was born February 7, 1942, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and lived most of his life in Louisiana where he was a field engineer in the oil industry. He moved to Alba in 1995 and was a member of East Texas Woodturners Association and the Lake Fork Baptist Church.

Howard R. Ruddick, 79, was born January 14, 1932 in Westbrook, Texas, the third son born of Isaac Ruddick and Dollie Morris Ruddick. When he was a young child his family relocated to Fort Worth, Texas where they made their new home. Upon graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served at Walker Air Force Base in Roswell, New Mexico.

Lydia Smith, 70, formerly of San Saba, passed away peacefully at home in Belton on Sunday, January 8, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer. A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at 2:00 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, in San Saba, Texas. A Rosary was held on Tuesday, January 10, 2012, at Blaylock Funeral Chapel in San Saba.

Thomas Carson Edmondson Jr., 64, of Arlington, Texas died January 7, 2012.Thomas, also known as “Tommy”, “Coach Ed”, or “Ched” had a passion for family, friends, work, and life in general. He was best known for his passion for coaching. He coached in the Arlington school district for 35 years.

During Cherokee’s Christmas break two FFA members, DesireeShannon and Lory Vaughn, along with Advisor Wes Harris helped wrap presents in conjuction with The San Saba County Child Welfare Board. The gifts that were wrapped went to Angels Unaware which is a program that provides gifts to children in San Saba County.

The Cherokee FFA is proud to announce that they have adopted a four mile stretch of Highway 16. The Adopt a Highway program is one of many community service projects that have been performed by the Cherokee FFA. Submitted by Talli Morrison, Treasurer.

The Armadillo basketball team started District play when they traveled to Early on Dec. 31. The Dillos jumped out to a 15-8 lead after the first quarter. In the second, Early cut our lead to 3 and the Dillos lead at the half 25-22. In the third quarter, the Dillos increased their lead by 2, ending the third quarter up 36-31.

Progress is being made toward breaking ground on the SSISD construction projects. Mike Nelson, architect and engineer Mickey Thomas along with school officials have met with the city officials to make certain of all city requirements during the project will be met. The engineer has thoroughly examined the sites and made several suggestions for construction.

Boys basketball coach Shawn Rogers and the varsity boys’ basketball team are off to a (1-2), start. Girls basketball coach Pam Starr and the Lady Coyotes are off to an (9-8), (0-4) start. Varsity action continues this Tuesday against Cherokee at Richland Springs, and Friday against Lohn at Richland Springs.

The Lady Dillos hosted the Dublin Lady Lions on Tuesday night. This game was a battle from start to finish. The Lady Dillos held a 15-12 lead at the end of the 1st quarter but would go in at the half trailing by 10. The Lady Dillos continued to fight their way back and cut the lead to 4 with 4 minutes left in the game.

It’s hard to believe the holidays are already over, but school is definitely back in full swing! The varsity basketball teams traveled to Lohn last Tuesday. Both teams came up short of victories. The junior high teams traveled to Richland Springs on Thursday. Both games were quite exciting, and both teams came home victorious.

The JV boys (Purple) have played three games since the last newspaper article. On Saturday December 31st, the teams traveled to Early for their first district contest. The JV boys lost to the Longhorns by the score of 45-33. Scoring for the JV Dillos was as follows: Garrett Welch (2), Kolton Ellis (3), Luis Vega (5), Isaac Zepeda (5), Kelton Brown (16), and Joe Lindsey (2).

January is School Board Appreciation Month! I don’t know of another governing board that works harder, gets more complaints, and receives no compensation for their time and effort. The only compensation they receive is the respect and admiration of students and teachers for whom they work. January is the month set aside to recognize the 7 people who contribute their time and energy to guiding the San Saba ISD.
