CHEROKEE—It’s different. It is not exactly what I imagined, but then, what is? I probably expected that this gym would transport me back to the mid-1940s when Oshkosh and Moline, and Syracuse and Waterloo called themselves professional towns. My speculation is their arenas were dark and foreboding but with a mystique that made them grand—becoming grandeur with age.The gymnasium in our narrative—constructed circa 1949 at Cherokee High—is small, but it’s no ...

Bible study causes a positive agreement that God knows the future, and He alone is the time keeper for all earthly events. Prophecy can show everything that will ever happen in this flesh age; and God has already caused it to be written in part, but prophecy cannot identify specific times for future events.

There are two things I know the new year has in store for me, that is if I manage to continue breathing, the first is a sixtieth birthday in March and a trip to Hawaii soon after. Someone wrote on my Facebook page that sixty is the new thirty. What?

We have been enjoying some nice, warm weather, the last few days. No rain in the forecast any time soon. My Elm Grove rain spotter says we wound up the year with a rainfall total of 18.1 inches. This is less than usual but still better than some years. It is hard to believe, but here we are at the beginning of 2012!

Forgive me if I have said this before, but, “Happy New Year.” It may be the epitome of redundancy but I have given this greeting for 60 years and I mean it as sincerely this year as I have all the years preceding. The first few years of my life, I had no teeth and so all I could say was “Goo-goo, daa-daa.” It meant the same thing.

A little girl walked to and from the elementary school each day. One afternoon a thunderstorm came.Following the roar of thunder, lightning, like a flaming sword, would cut through the sky. The mother quickly got into her car and drove along the route to her child’s school. She saw her little girl walking along, but at each flash of lightning, the child would stop, look up and smile.

One of the things I love most about living on the ranch is the quiet. When I am here alone, I typically leave the radio and the television off most of the time and enjoy the silence. Or at least I thought it was quiet here, but that was before I went to the Pruett house. My entire family went to West Texas the day after Christmas to hunt mule deer for a few days.

It is interesting to see some of the goals, ideas or resolutions being advocated for 2012. Some are saying it is the year of losing weight, others exercise and others healthy eating just to mention a few. I used to hurriedly make a list of new years resolutions and really had no real intention of keeping them.

Wow, what a start to the New Year. The good news is that there was neither one fatal accident nor injury accident in our county during our holidays. This has been one of our goals, along with DPS and that is to work hard to slow down the traffic speed and to slow down the alcohol related accidents and fatalities on our roadways.

2012 Night Sky HighlightsThe coming year offers many stargazing delights, and a couple of them don’t even occur at night. There will be the usual annual meteor showers, brilliant naked-eye planets, and pairings of night sky objects, but 2012 also will treat us to a partial solar eclipse and a rare transit of Venus.

Did everyone get enough football over the holiday weekend? There were so many bowls that it was hard to remember which ones you were watching, think they must have a bowl for everything and everyone.Received some news from Hugo and Lesa Preece too late to make the paper concerning activities Christmas.

Surely he uses cue cards when he phones during bowl game intermissions, touching topics all over the conversation map in record time. Verbal responses lengthen calls, so I simply smile, nod or frown, relying on assorted expressions of bewilderment.Such was the plan when Uncle Mort, my 99 year-old kin, called from the thicket.

Q: How long have weather vanes been around?A: We know weather vanes have been used for over 2,000 years, says Brent McRoberts of Texas A&M University. “In 48 B.C., a Greek astronomer constructed a rod to determine which way the wind was blowing,” he explains. “On top of the rod, he placed a bronze figure of a Triton, which was a half-man, half-fish creature, so it would easily indicate which direction the wind was coming from.
