The San Saba County Commissioners Court met Monday, October 24th at 9:00 a.m. in the County Judge’s Chambers. County Judge, Byron Theodosis called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone to the court. On Monday the Richland Springs School Board learned that the district received a rating of “Superior Achievement” from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) regarding financial operations. The San Saba High School Golden Armadillo Band under the direction of Brian Sours, color guard coordinator Lauren Mays, and drum tech Stephen Sullivan performed at the annual UIL Marching Assessment in Brady on October 15. The band is assessed using a standardized rubric that outlines musicianship, marching, tone quality, and various other aspects of marching band.

I do not claim to be a fisherman but when I get to go I thoroughly enjoy it. One particular trip we were fishing on a river that wasn’t very deep and it twisted and turned and there were even a few sandbars in the middle. Standing on the riverbank we watched other fishermen for a few minutes.

The prickly pear cactus was selected by the Texas Legislature in 1995 to be the State Plant of Texas. That information probably comes as a bit of a surprise to some of you as it did to me. But on reflection I can think of no more appropriate choice to be representative of the Lone Star State.The “prickly pear cactus” is not the name for a single species.

The news this week will be all but non existing, because Jo and Bill Price will be attending a work shop in Belton Monday for Ombudsman starting at 10:00 a.m. which will give no time to gather news for the column. For some unknown reason people do not appreciate being called around 4:00 a.m.

What a beautiful weather week! The daily sunrises have been awesome and nothing beats an early morning cup of tea while God wakes up the rest of the area! After a horrendously hot summer, the kids want to stay out longer at recess, but the daily grind must continue. It’s hard to believe progress reports are out again and before you know it the second six weeks will be complete.

For 14 years, it was by word of mouth only that each December a truck would arrive with the wreaths from Maine at Arlington Cemetery in Virginia...always at dawn...always dignified...with so little fanfare, it was almost a Christmas surprise.Each year Worcester Wreath Company donates 5000 wreaths to be placed on the graves at Arlington National Cemetery to honor our Veterans...all during the holidays.

Receipts totaled 2280 head for the week. The market continued its upward trend with stocker steers selling $5 to $7 higher and heifers $5 higher. Eugene Barton Reavis, 60, passed away Friday, October 21, 2011 at Metroplex Hospital in Killeen, TX.Eugene was born October 8, 1951 in Lampasas, TX to Leonard Barton Reavis and Dorothy Ellen Hunt Reavis. Willynn Zulauf, 86, a lifetime resident of Cherokee, Texas passed away Tuesday October 18, 2011. She was born November 4, 1924 to Alva Keeney and Margie (Ray) Keeney in Cherokee, Texas. Willynn married John William Zulauf on August 12, 1945 in Cherokee, Texas; he preceded her in death on April 11, 1992.

This past Thursday the 7th grade Dillos Beat a good Coleman Bluecat team by 2 Pts.The Game started off as a defensive battle as the Dillos held the bluecats to a 3 and out first series. The Dillos played a great Defensive game holding Coleman to only one of its 3- 2pt conversions.

This past week the Armadillo football teams played the Coleman Bluecats.The 7th Grade won 20-18. Record is 5-1-1/ 2-1. the 8th grade lost 37-12. Record is 4-3/ 2-1. The JV lost 27-12. Record is 2-5-1/1-1-1. The Varsity lost 25-21. Record is 4-4 overall and 1-2 in district. This week we take on the Ozona Lions.

The Indians came out strong against the Lohn Eagles last Friday night. Trey Shannon ran in a 12-yard run for the first touchdown of the night. The Indians followed up with an on-side recovery on their own 30 yard line. Shannon connected with Burnam Sloan for a 5 yard touchdown pass.

Coleman's 8th Grade Bluecats defeated the San Saba 8th Dillos by a score of 37-12 in Coleman last Thursday night. The Bluecats size and speed hindered the Dillos.San Saba kicked to Coleman to begin the game. David Valencia, Ramiro Coronado and Joey Salinas played hard on defense. Coleman drove the ball to the Dillo 20.

The Richland Springs Coyote 3rd/4th grade pee wee tackle football team came up short on their bid to advance to the Six-Man Super Bowl by a score of 36-20. It was a hard fought back and forth struggle, but a late surge by Strawn proved to be the difference. Eli Salinas was the spark for the Coyotes as he returned a kickoff 45 yards and added two touchdown runs from 25 and 50 yards out.

The Richland Springs Coyote 5th/6th grade Pee Wee football team showed why they have won back-to-back Six-Man Pee Wee Super Bowl Championships! They totally dominated the Rising Star Wildcats this past Saturday in Zephyr by a score of 50-6 and improved 5-0! The Coyotes rushing attack was too much for the Wildcats to stop.

The Richland Springs Pee Wee Flag football team will play for the Six-Man Pee Wee Super Bowl this Saturday, October 29th, in Brookesmith. Kickoff is set for 9:00am. They advanced this past Saturday by beating the Gordon Longhorns by a score of 20-0! The Coyotes swarming defense kept the longhorns out of the end zone all day.

The San Saba Armadillos fell to the Coleman Bluecats 25-21 at Hufford Field in Coleman last Friday night. San Saba had opportunities to put points on the board but the Coleman defense stopped the Armadillos on four occasions on 4th and short. The Bluecat offense did just enough to get the win.Coleman won the toss and deferred to the second half.

Since the last update, the San Saba 3rd and 4th grade football team have defeated the Llano Yellow Jackets and the Lampasas Badgers. The game against the Jackets was the 1st home game ever for these players and they came out playing fired up in the rain. When the final seconds ticked off the clock, it was San Saba 28, Llano 6.

Coyote fans spoiled by the blowout wins the Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Junior High teams have posted this year, were thoroughly entertained by the JV Coyotes last Thursday night at Coyote Field. Big hits, hard running, stifling defense and generally great football was displayed by both teams on this cool and breezy evening.

The great University of Texas Coach Darrell Royal once said, “There are three things that can happen when you pass the football,...and two of them are bad”. I guess the Brookesmith coaches saw something in the scout films, a perceived weakness perhaps... something, that made them think they could pass the football against the Coyotes.

It took the Coyotes more than 8 seconds to tame the Brookesmith Mustangs last Thursday night at Coyote Ranch, but by the end of the half, the Junior Mustangs had been gentled and safely settled in their stalls for the night. No whips or spurs were used on the broncs just good old fashioned hard hitting football.
