The San Saba City Council conducted a Public Hearing prior to their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 11th at 6 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. Mayor, Ken Jordan called the meeting to order and announced a quorum present. Mark Amthor gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags.The Public Hearing was to receive comments for or against a condemnation on a mobile home located at 1212 S.

San Saba will host numerous out-of-town guests to our community this Saturday with multiple events planned. In addition to the first annual San Saba River Pecan Jam Festival, the Texas Youth Football League will be bringing in families for football games for 3rd through 6th grade athletes and Texas AgriLife Extension is holding its 2011 Pecan Bottom Run beginning with an 8 a.m.

The Texas AgriLIFE Extension Service and Scott & White Healthcare have partnered together to produce a health fair for San Saba and surrounding area residents. The health fair will be held Tuesday November 1st, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.at the San Saba Civic Center in Mill Pond Park.Screenings for cholesterol, blood sugar, hemoglobin (anemia screen) and blood pressure will be offered as well as flu shots.

The San Saba County Commissioners Court met Wednesday, October 12th at 9 a.m. in the County Judge’s Chambers. The San Saba Garden Club’s recognition of “Yard of the Month” goes to Carlos and Jan Anderson of 1502 W. Commerce Street for October. The cute fall decorations throughout the landscape compliment the floral and foliage plants in beds, containers, and rock borders. An abundance of elephant ears, English ivy, sweet potato vine, shefflera plants, creeping vines, and oak trees provide contrasts of dark and bright greens in the yard to make the vibrant colors pop!

The San Saba County Pecan Queen will be crowned during theSan Saba River Pecan Jam, at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, October 22nd in Risien Park. Scholarships will be awarded as follows: Queen - $1500 and Tiara; 1st Runner Up - $500; 2nd Runner Up - $250. The Queen will receive a $200 Savings Bond and both Runner Ups a $100 Savings Bond from Arrowhead Bank.

This is a crack in the slab at the Museum. It’s been there a long time and has been getting deeper and wider. Recently, a Museum Board Member (who talks fairly slowly and has a bit of a Texas twang) said, “Y’know, that crack in the slab is gettin’ so deep and wide that critters could come right up through it.” Well, that did it.

Travis Shannon and the Angelo State University meat judging team returned home Monday, October 17, from a week of traveling to Sioux City, Iowa, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Dakota City, Lincoln, and Omaha, Nebraska, for the Royal National Intercollegiate Meat Judging Competition. All the members of the Bend Community Center have been busy getting ready for the big fund raiser that will be October 22. A cake auction, silent auction, Jackie Brister fish fry, desserts made by the Bend ladies and carnival games for the children and face painting. The weather should be nice and green grass can be seen just about everywhere, which will be a very welcome sight for everyone.

A good friend of mine is a retired seminary professor. We would get together with some friends weekly to have a fellowship meal and talk. They met at a local Mexican restaurant and one of the topics of discussion was the things of God. I have attended one of those fellowship meals and enjoyed the discussions.

The Pecan Jam Association, Lynn and Mike McHenry and the San Saba County Chamber of Commerce visited the 2011 Texas State Fair in Dallas to invite everyone to the San Saba River Pecan Jam on October 22, 2011. The Rusty Brothers performed on stage, as well as Chef Terrry Thompson Anderson, doing a Pecan Pie cooking demonstration.

The October meeting of the Bend Chapter of the County Extension Education clubs met on Monday, October 10 at the Methodist Church in Bend, TX. The main topic of discussion was about the support club members will provide to the San Saba County Extension Education Clubs’ booth at the Pecan Jam.

Central Texas Telephone Cooperative, Inc. recently celebrated its 60th anniversary at this year’s annual membership meeting. The meeting was held at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center in Brady, Texas with approximately 400 people in attendance. Registration gifts reflecting the 60th anniversary of the Cooperative were given to all registered members.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The local Dove Project held a Candle Light Vigil Service on October 12th at 7:30 p.m. at Mill Pond. Malissa Mims, Director of the Dove Project, welcomed the approximately 50 people in attendance and Tony Guidroz gave the invocation. Malissa gave information of violent crimes/victims in the state of Texas.

Mrs. J.P. (Irene) Cummings has been writing the column, Elm Grove Echoes for many years, and this reporter in San Saba wanted to meet and get information from this remarkable lady. Arrangements were made to meet Irene at the Elm Grove Gospel Sing at 7 p.m. on Saturday, October 15th in the Community Center at Elm Grove.Irene’s daughter, Marilyn Suber, recognized this stranger as soon as I walked in the door of the Community Center and directed me to meet her mother.

True Cowboy Stories by Travis Herring is a book about old time cowboys from this area. One, Bill Lewis, Sandra Baskin's dad is a good example of the interesting stories. Others are all the way back to the Chisholm trail days, with history of how they lived, farmed and ranched.

The San Saba Scottish Rite Club will conduct a joint meeting with the Llano County Scottish Rite Club this Friday, October 21st. The meeting will take place at the Kingsland Masonic Lodge with a meal of barbeque to be served at 6:30PM. Scottish Rite Masons that wish to carpool should meet at the Lodge hall in San Saba and be prepared to leave at 5:30PM sharp.

On 10/11/2011 the Cherokee Wildlife Class had a guest presentation from Hunter Fry. Mr. Fry talked about Taxidermy and Welding as a career. Mr. Fry works at D&B Taxidermy in Cherokee, Texas and is a certified welder through TSTC. Mr. Fry emphasized to the students that it is a good idea to have a skill in many areas.

On September 17, 2011, Buddy Adams took this elk down on the NX Bar Ranch at Sheridan, WY. The Boone & Crockett score was 370. It was one of the largest elk killed on the 25,000 acre ranch. The inside measurement was 45 inches and the elk weighed 835 pounds.

Receipts totaled 1428 head for the week. Receipts were reduced due to the good 4 - 6 inches of rain that fell throughout a lot of the area. Demand was very strong and market active with the stocker steers selling $3 higher and heifers $3-$5 higher. Feeder steers and heifers were steady.

Gloria Singleton died Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at the age of 77 in Brownwood. A visitation was scheduled for 5 – 8 p.m. Thursday, October 13, at the Netherton Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be private.Gloria Beth Aylor was born June 6, 1934 in San Saba County, the only child of Homer Borden and Mary (Elmore) Aylor.Gloria met the love of her life, Jerry Singleton when he arrived in San Saba as an MP attached to Operation Longhorn.

Ruffen Barefoot, born January 31, 1955 joined our Heavenly Father October 10, 2011. He was born in Crane, TX, son of Nell Forman and the late W.R. Barefoot. He graduated from Stanton County High School in Johnson, KS in 1973 and then graduated from Amarillo College. He spent several years working in Amarillo then moved to Austin, TX where he started his own business, “Barefoot Boatworks”.

San Saba High School participated in the Cindy Hayes food drive. Students had several competitions going on to bring in cans. Students in Mrs. Chambers’ English II Honors and English III honors class competed against each other to bring in a total of 488 cans. The Sophomore Honors class pictured came out ahead winning with 253 cans over the Juniors 235.

The 7th grade Dillos played this past Thursday against the Sonora Colts and lost a hard fought game. The only offensive score came from Chase Turner on a good run around the end, which was set up from the blocking of AJ Paredez, Daniel Aragon, Kutter Isham, Jesus Vega, Alan Martinez, Zayne Rhodes, Braiden Johsnon and running backs Colt Carlisle, Elisha Cisneroz and Bryce Lewis.

The San Saba 8th grade Dillos out scored the Sonora 8th grade Broncos by a score of 44-28 at Rogan Field last Thursday night. The Dillos ran the wishbone and controlled the ball most of the game while Sonora ran the spread offense and scored on passes. San Saba's Emiliano Rocha ran for 329 yards and David Valencia ran for 108 yards.

This past week all of the Dillo Football teams played the Sonora Broncos. The 7th. grade lost 28-6, our record is 4-1-1 and 1-1 in district. The 8th. grade won 44-28, our record is 4-2 and 2-0 in district. The JV tied 14-14, our record is 2-4-1 and 1-0-1 in district.

The Sonora Broncos made their first visit to Rogan Field a memorable one. Taking advantage of San Saba turnovers and miscues, the Broncos came away with a lop-sided 51-23 win over the Armadillos last Friday night. Sonora returned two interceptions for touchdowns and made big gains by breaking tackles that would have been for losses.Sonora received the opening kick and started at the 40-yard line.

Since there’s no football game to report on I’ll talk about cross country and other goings on in the great community of Cherokee! Our cross country teams are hard at work preparing for the district meet to be held the 26th at Eden. All teams ran at Priddy’s meet this week.

If you did not travel to Sonora last Thursday then you missed a very good game. Our young Dillos played a great game against a very good Sonora team and came home with a 14-14 tie.Scoring for the Dillos were Kolton Ellis on an interception return and Kelton Brown on a twenty yard run.

The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met October 13, 2011 for play day with the Chair for October, Anita Miles, who replaced Becky Hardin, called for a game of team play using the traveling four ball point system, 3 points for birdie, 2 points for par, 1 point for boggie, plus your handicap.

Richland Springs JV ran their record to 5-1 last Thursday night in Rochelle with their 4th consecutive shut-out, blanking the Hornets 48-0. The game ended midway through the 3rd quarter due to the mercy rule. The JV Coyotes have held their opponents scoreless, in more than 16 quarters, with scores of 50-0, 50-0, 48-0 and 48-0 in their last four games.

The Junior High Coyotes put on quite a show last Thursday evening in Lohn blasting the Eagles 52-6. Coach Jerry Burkhart used a various assortment of weapons in the victory which ended early in the fourth quarter due to the mercy rule. With the older players on the sidelines or used as blockers for much of the game, some of the younger players took full advantage of the opportunity to get into the endzone.

San Saba ISD began studying facility needs four years ago with an official facility study plan produced by an independent agency known as the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA). This facility study was presented to a group of parents, business owners, community members, and school staff for their review.

Half-way there! This is the nine-week mark for San Saba ISD. That means that this week marks the final week of grades for the first nine-weeks reporting period in high school. That means that half of the first semester is finished. There has been much asked of students during the first nine weeks.

This last week, the Armadillos were given a special gift. Mr. Jim Faught had an idea to make a really larger banner that would serve as a permanent sign and would hang at Rogan Field. The sign designed by SSHS student, Marshall McIntosh is 8 x 30 feet in size and boasts the motto: “No Hill too Steep; No Ditch Too Deep.” At the pep rally against Sonora, the sign was unveiled and Mr.

Kids seem to always be in transition. They go from being infants to toddlers to preschoolers to school age to teenagers and to young adults with a blink of an eye. Some transitions are easier than others. The most challenging transition is moving from elementary to middle school. Going to middle school creates many first-time anxieties, apprehensions, and fears for children.
