Gov. Rick Perry continues to closely monitor the ongoing wildfires with updates from his staff and State Emergency Management Chief Nim Kidd. He will return to Texas this afternoon. The governor is urging all Texans to closely monitor conditions and reports, and heed all warnings from local officials as extremely dry and windy conditions are expected to continue fueling wildfires that continue raging across the state.

The San Saba ISD Board of Trustees met for a Special Meeting on Tuesday, September 6th at 7:45 a.m. The one item on the agenda was to order a November Bond Election. The Board set the Election for November 8th, for a Bond of $5,900,000. The total project will be $6,322.750, and the board voted to put $422,750 in local funds to support the project.

The San Saba Scottish Rite Club will meet at the Lodge Hall in San Saba on Thursday, September 8th for its quarterly meeting. A meal of barbeque chicken and baked potatoes will be served and members are asked to bring a complimentary covered side dish, salad, bread or dessert. Family and guests are invited. After the meal, members and guests will adjourn to the Lodge Room for a video program entitled "Architects of Freedom."

For many years growing up I thought one of two things might be possible concerning my origin; 1. I was left on my parent’s doorstep and they decided to keep me. 2. My mom was out gardening in the backyard one morning, found an interestingly shaped pod, brought it into the house and a few weeks later I emerged and they decided to keep me.

Delton and Valerie McGuire went to East Texas to visit with their children and granddaughter Avonlea during the holiday week-end. Nettie Jean Randolph took grandaughters Jenna, Jamie and Jessica Ball to Fredericksburg to visit with Kelli, Ashley and Paul Jenski while mom and dad, Sid and Kristi Ball, went on a short vacation. The Cherokee Church of Christ had their monthly breakfast on Labor Day.

While reading through a passage in the Old Testament recently, I was reminded of the compassion of our God. In 1 Chronicles 21 David, the man after God’s own heart, and the king of Israel, sinned. He had the people numbered and it displeased God. As a result, God struck the Israelites.

100 Years Ago August 31, 1911 Mrs. Ben Smalensky left Monday to bring back an expert and up-to-date trimmer for her millinery department this fall. The lady is on her way from St. Louis and Mr. Smalensky will meet her in Dallas. N.B. Lewis and daughter, Miss Emma of Richland Springs, were passengers on the east bound train Monday.

We have had a strong north wind blowing for the past two days. If only it would blow in some rain. As we are watching the news though, in Bastrop as well as all the other places which are burning, we realize we could be much worse off than what we are. There will be no Cox Cemetery work day and business meeting this month after all.

The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met September 1, 2011 for the monthly business meeting. President, Anita Miles, called the meeting to order and the meeting was opened with prayer by Janet Hoyt. Secretary, Jo Anne Hardy, read the minutes and they were approved as read. There was a report on our Treasurer, Bobbie Churchill.

The United States congress passed a bipartisan bill in 2001 called, "No Child Left Behind" and it was quickly signed by then President George W. Bush. Today it is often referred to as the NCLB and the purpose of the bill was to try and ensure that all the children in the United States of America were being challenged to a higher standard of education and that no child was neglected or that every child was given the same opportunity of a excellent education.

We are now in full swing with football, bands and fans going to games on Thursday and Friday nights. Sweat through the games now with all the heat and before you know it will be bundling up trying to stay warm, or at least that is what everyone is looking forward to.

Here it is Labor Day and I am laboring! My computer is still in a state of death, and so I am forced to come to school and use my computer here. I’ve been pondering the whole faith thing where our rain issue is concerned, and I still believe the Lord is going to send a bounty of rain.

Building Christian character in our children is the most important gift we can give. Teaching by example is the best way to help them learn. There are many role models in the Bible. Members of the class numbered 39 with 29 spouses, friends, children, and former teachers. Barbeque was furnished by the class funds, cooked by Mike McDowell, and enjoyed along with sides of all kinds provided by the attendees. We realize that it has been some time since our last visit here in the "News," but not a whole lot has changed, on the Home front, since our last attempt at communication. Receipts totaled 8932 head for the week. A Choice offering of cattle were on hand for the Premium Weaned Calf Sale and the Stocker and Feeder Sale. Stocker steers and heifers sold a full $5 higher. Feeder steers were steady to $1 higher and feeder heifers were $3 higher. Packer cows were $2 lower and packer bulls were $3 lower.

Bill Nelson 77, passed away on September 1, 2011 at his ranch in San Saba, TX surrounded by his family and his beloved dog Maggie. Bill was born on January 8, 1934 in Great Bend, Kansas. He grew up in Ellinwood, Kansas, graduated from Ellinwood High School then followed his high school sweetheart, Nancy Olson, to Texas.

Dorothy Jane Swenson Miller, passed away September 5, 2011 in her home. She was born June 7, 1935 to T.D. Swenson and Velma Fae Ricketson Swenson at Oxford, Texas. Dorothy graduated from Llano High School. She married Jim Porch July 7, 1953. They had one son, Wayne, who died in a car accident January 5, 1996.

The San Saba Band Boosters will be raffling a quilt again this season, made and donated by Michele Manus (Melanie Mathis’ mother). Tickets will be $1.00 per chance, or $6.00 for 5 chances, and will be sold at the Band Booster table during all home JV and varsity games. The drawing will be at the Ozona game, October 28.

The Armadillos got past the Goldthwaite Eagles last week. We really appreciate the great crowd that followed across the river. We are extremely proud of the team. Allen Hale was named San Angelo Standard times player of the week. This week the Armadillos take on the Wall Hawks. Thursday September 8th, the JV travels to Wall; the game time is 6:30.

The annual "Battle of the River" was expected to be a hard-hitting, close contest for Goldthwaite’s homecoming. It lived up to expectations with San Saba having a 35-15 lead going into the final quarter and hanging on to win 35-29. There were several hard hits from both teams with some causing fumbles. Goldthwaite won the opening toss and elected to receive.

It’s hard to believe it is already the third week of school. Time seems to fly by once school starts. The school day starts at 8:00 and ends at 3:36. Please drive slowly through campus when picking-up or dropping-off schoolchildren. Drop-off and pick-up students in the lane between the cafetorium and the large oak tree.

The Coyotes JV lost a nail biter to the Divison I Lometa Hornets JV last Thursday night in Lometa. The late awakening Coyotes were down 20-8 with only a few seconds remaining in the 3rd period when Stanley Butler scored to make it 20-14. A few minutes later he scored again to tie the score 20-20 with 7:26 remaining in the game.

The Coyotes needed only 5:48 in time of possession to tally 70 points last Friday night to squash the Panther Creek Panthers 70-8, mercifully ending the game at halftime.The defending champions and #1 ranked Coyotes are definitely circled in red on most opponents schedules this season. A win against the Coyotes can make the season a good year, for any team, regardless of their wins and losses.

School Rivalries…….This is possibly one thing that we all have in common across our school years. Each and every one of us regardless of where we went to school or when we went to school, all have a story to tell about a great game or competition with a rival school.
