Cherokee Volunteer Fire Department Quilt Raffle - Maureen Johnson (left) and Carolyn Perry are shown above with the queen-size quilt made by the Cherokee Quilters group. The raffle will be held September 10th at the Annual Cherokee VFD Fish Fry and BBQ at 6:30 at the fire hall. The San Saba County Commissioners Court met on Tuesday, July 26th at 9:00 a.m.in the County Judge’s Chambers. Can you Freeze Fresh meats in Supermarket Wrappings? The key here is how long you will leave it in the freezer. You can leave it in its wrapping if you will use it in a month or two. The U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends for longer storage (over 2 months) that you add a second wrapping.

There is still no rain and none in the forecast. We were disappointed when we didn’t get any rain off of the hurricane. The San Saba River Golf Course is very fortunate to have Keith Harris as their pro. He not only manages the course is a great way, both financially and physically, but he’s always enjoyable and knows his golf and how to manage a course! And he is lucky to have his helpmate, Crystal! This week he went beyond the call of duty!

The new school year is about to get under way and I am excited to be the new head cross country coach for 2011. For those of you who did not read my first-ever column a year or two ago may wonder why the title is about an arts guild when I really do not write about art very often. I was watching Texas Country Reporter this past week when one of the guests said that he adhered to the Japanese philosophy that art is created in everyday life whenever we make or do nearly anything.

Not a lot of news this week. The tanks are drying up, the grass has dried up long ago, some of the fruit trees are going by the wayside and it looks like any good news around the Bend is drying up too. The Tropical storm that was reported to be bringing in some moisture just didn’t make it up this far, but did help some folks in South Texas.

It is not just sheep but all kinds of livestock and it is because of the severe drought we are having. Last week I bought a few bales of alfalfa hay and as I pulled up to the sheep pens I was attacked or should I say the trailer of hay was attacked.

I’m taking a break from quilting. I’ve worked on my quilt, off and on, since I returned from Germany. Quilting is one of those life lessons things that constantly make you reexamine yourself. Take this morning for instance. I worked all day yesterday fixing one section of this quilt. So this morning I decided, if one half could be fixed, so could the other.

Donna Blossman, Kathryn Robertson, DiAnne Scott and Susan Broyles spent 5 days touring New York City and the surrounding area. While there, they went on a walking tour and visited Central Park, Ground Zero, Wall Street, Trump Towers and many other well known sites. They also went on a cruise tour and saw the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the Brooklyn Bridge and went to the Empire State building where they went up to the Observation Deck at night and took pictures.

Ingredients 10 banana peppers 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened 1 egg 1 cup (4 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese 1/2 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese 1 small onion, finely chopped 1/2 cup finely chopped pepperoni 2 tablespoons Crisco® Olive Oil Cut peppers in half lengthwise; open and lay flat. The Texas Department of Transportation has re-opened the bridge located on C.R. 110 @ the San Saba River in San Saba County to thru traffic. The public is no longer required to utilized the detour that had been put into place during construction operations.

Receipts totaled 4184 head for the week. The market was a little more uneven this week with some cattle higher and some steady or a little lower but demand was still good on all classes. Stocker steers sold steady except for some of the 4 weights which were $3 - $4 lower.

Texas AgriLife Extension Service in Mills, San Saba and Brown Counties will host a Private Applicator Pesticide Training and Testing on Thursday, August 18, 2011 at the Mills County State Bank Community Room at 1017 Parker Street. The classroom training will begin at 8:30 a.m. through noon. Texas Department of Agriculture will administer the written test following the classroom training.

This year, the Texas Hunters for the Hungry program provided 178,662 pounds of venison to more than 100 organizations that serve low income people across Texas. The program, administered by the Texas Association of Community Action Agencies, Inc. (TACAA), has exceeded two million pounds of venison donated over the last two decades. According to the USDA, Texas has the second highest rate of food insecurity in the nation, with one in six households struggling to afford food.

James Rufus Cobern, age 73, passed away peacefully at home July 29, 2011 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Rufus was born in San Saba, Texas on August 30, 1937 to Lillian (Gage) and L.P. "Slim" Cobern. He was a beloved coach, teacher and mentor and influenced the lives of hundreds of former students from Comstock to Santa Ana, to Paint Rock and Lometa, where he retired in1992, to his ranch on the Cherokee Creek near Bend.

Hannah Marie Crosby Barker received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a major in Special Education during Texas A&M University’s May graduation ceremony. Hannah has accepted a position as the Special Education Life Skills teacher at Normangee Elementary. She and her husband, Justin, continue to reside in College Station while he completes his degree in Industrial Engineering.

Over 100 entries came to the San Saba Tennis Courts on July 29 – 30. The action was steady from 8 a.m to 10 p.m on both days. SSISD young ladies participated in the Lady Dillo Basketball Camp this past week. The camp emphasized fundamental skills development such as ball handling, shooting technique, passing, and defensive positioning. The girls also had the chance to display their talents by competing in various team games and individual contests. Staff at SSHS are proud to announce the implementation of a MENTORING MATTERS program. It is a proven fact that students that have solid adult support consistently do better in school. Mr. Martin wants to provide to his students a mentor that handles a group no more than three students.

Data tables released July 28 Based on the data, 89% of all students passed the reading portion of the TAKS assessment, 88% passed the writing, 91% passed the social studies, 88% passed the math, and 81% passed the science. All areas of TAKS scores have improved, however, since academic assessments in the 2002-2003 school year.

The SSHS Dilloettes attended camp at the YO Ranch in Kerrville last week. They learned 5 routines in 3 days and a had a great bonding experience. They were among 7 other schools and over 150 dancers. The ladies received a Super Sweepstakes trophy in which they had to be on time for every scheduled event, receive Division I ratings in each night’s evaluations and make a Positive Overall Impression on the Danceline Staff.

In an attempt to boost academics at SSHS, we are seeking accurate information on students of the past that have either scored perfect on the ACT or SAT, or even a perfect score on one of the parts of the ACT or SAT. We are going to dedicate the middle section of the Trophy cases by the high school entrance for items and pictures of students for just academic reasons. All of the students that were commended on all TAKS tests for last year will have an 8X10 picture in the case.
