Terry Smith, (Center) President of the Carrie Lisa Smith Memorial Fund, presented Fire Chief Chris Stewart (Right) and Captain Jack Blossman of the San Saba Volunteer Fire Department a check in the amount of $1,000.00 as the first donation to the building of the new fire station. Ground breaking has already started on the property that is located south of the Senior Center.

A fast moving grass fire occurred on Saturday at around 12:45 p.m. on FM500 near the Spring Creek tabernacle. A fire was reported to the 911 operator and San Saba, Elm Grove, Richland Springs and Cherokee Fire Departments attacked it immediately.
The fire was fast moving and in heavy fuel and several residences were in danger.

The San Saba City Council convened for a called meeting prior to a budget workshop on Monday, July 25th at 6:00 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. Acting Mayor, Martha Leigh Whitten called the meeting to order, welcomed everyone to the meeting and announced a quorum present with Mayor Ken Jordan and Councilman Shawn Oliver absent.

he San Saba ISD Board of Trustees held a regular meeting on Tuesday, July 19th at 6:00 PM in the Central Administration Office. President, Kim Kirk called the meeting to order, announced a quorum with Trustee Angela Johnson absent, and welcomed everyone to the meeting. Trustee, Kevin Shahan gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags.

There is a small book that has influenced more people and their decisions than any other that will ever be written. It is known as God's Holy Bible, and it is a shame that too many are not reading it today. It is hurting God for it to not be revealing His ways as He intended it to do.

There are times being a vegetarian in Texas cattle country feels much like being a nudist at a sandblasting demonstration, very uncomfortable. I was not born a vegetarian; oh wait, yes I was. I only drank milk which technically would make me not a vegan but certainly a vegetarian so scratch that last statement.

There are two young people in our church that have gotten sweet on each other and he proposed and she accepted. It is a neat thing what they are about to do, a church wedding, because so many others are doing what God does not approve of, just living together, (Exodus 20:14).

Jaze Randolph from Gustine spent the weekend with Jerry and Richard Randolph. Richard’s family had a birthday dinner for him on Friday night at Sandy’s home in Llano.
Recent visitors in Cherokee were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Lee Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Smith and Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Smith.
Sue & Robert Broyles opened the gate to their beautiful backyard for a fish fry last Friday night celebrating the completion of the raffle quilt for the Cherokee VFD.

In someone’s church bulletin I read the following. "Do you know why a car’s windshield is so large and the rear view mirror so small? Your past is not as important as your future." I’m not sure if that is the reason for the disparity of the window and the mirror, but the idea is true.

The county farmers union met with the Live Oak Local last Thursday and Friday. The following officers were elected: W.T. Dowda, president; Joseph Eiler, vice-president; W.C. Biggs, secretary-treasurer; J.E. Johnson, county lecturer.
W.R. Smith, architect, and superintendent of construction for the new school building at Richland Springs, brought down a large ear of corn with him Friday.

The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met July 21, 2011 for play day with the Chair for July, Sandee Hartley, calling for a game of ‘Nines’, where each person is awarded points according to how they finished the hole with the total number of points being nine. Anita Miles was first and scored the Low Gross for the day, Sandee Hartley second, and Janet Hoyt was third.

The weather has been hot and the pace for law enforcement has been just as hot. We have seen a record number of calls for service coming into dispatch, as the heat continues to effect everything in our county. The past week, we have seen EMS, Fire and Police personnel jumping from call to call.

Catherine Hicks celebrated her birthday Sunday afternoon by having a swimming party at the home of Pat and Bonnie Millican. A birthday cake with pink icing in the shape of a pig, and pink pig cookies were the highlight of the party. Catherine received many nice gifts and was the Queen Bee for the day.
Leon and Mebbie Eckhoff recently returned from a trip to Potstone, Minnesota, where they attended the National American Rambouillet show and sale.

New study shows 49 percent rise in emergency department visits for drug related suicide attempts by females aged 50 and older from 2005 to 2009.
A new national study shows that from 2005 to 2009 (the most recent year with available figures) there was a 49 percent increase in emergency department visits for drug related suicide attempts by women aged 50 and older — from 11,235 visits in 2005 to 16,757 in 2009.

The San Saba Garden Club Yard of the Month for July belongs to Ronnie and Lesa Schulze at 1201 Commerce Street. It contains a multitude of plants and flowers including a water fountain, hanging baskets, tropical plants and blooming plants too many to name, several rock walkways and arbors. There is ginger from a Southern Plantation and there was a huge historic grapevine in the backyard that was killed last winter by our unusual weather.

Little boys are so sweet and fun, we decided to have another one. The good Lord has blessed us yet again.. Tripp Alan Ketchum came into this world on June 30th, 2011 at 12:25 pm. He weighed 6lbs 15 oz, and was 19 1/2 inches long. Tripp was welcomed home by his very excited big brother, Stone.

Michael and Heather Sweeney of Dallas are pleased to announce the birth of their son, Jonathan David Sweeney. Jonathan was born at 11:53 AM May 27, 2011, at Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. He weighed 6 pounds 12 ounces and was 18 ½ inches long. He is welcomed home by his 3 ½ year old big sister, Sadie and 2 year old big brother, Luke.

I could see the devastation along Highway 500 of the results that the fire had ravaged land and trees. Then I could smell the smoke as I stepped out of my truck, looking around to see the activities of airplanes unloading chemicals or water and firefighters doing what they needed to do.

We had a big fire yesterday in the little town of Spring Creek, just north of San Saba. It started around noon and the wind was blowing about 15 mph. I got there first with my tractor but due to the flames and heat, there was little I could do to even slow it down.

San Saba County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Valerie Cortinovis, reminds producers that they must submit an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) verification consent form (CCC-927 or CCC-928) to the IRS as soon as possible in order to maintain eligibility for 2009 and 2010 program benefits.

Carolyn Ann Calley, 65 of Liberty Hill Texas passed away July 4, 2011. She was born August 26, 1945 to Frances Daniel and Jesse Robbins in Orange, Texas. On August 16, 1963 she married Gordon Calley in San Saba, Texas. Mrs. Calley was a member of the Hwy 29 Church of Christ in Liberty Hill.

Lennie Catheryn McDonald Dismuke, of San Saba, passed away Thursday, July 21, 2011, in San Saba. She was born November 25, 1917 in Benjamin, TX, the daughter of Sarah Louisa Green and Charlie McDonald. She came to San Saba to visit, she met T. K. Dismuke and they were married on November 20, 1936.
