The San Saba City Council met for a regular meeting prior to a budget workshop on Tuesday, July 12th at 6:00 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. Mayor Ken Jordan called the meeting to order and announced a quorum present with Mayor Pro-Tem Shawn Oliver absent. At an early age, Sandra Deans began coloring and painting. It was through these experiences she is now an amazing water color artist. Sandra is a self-taught artist who has never had any formal school training. She has attended a number of workshops in the summer to develop additional skills.

Seth Hahn has had a busy summer. He went to basketball camp in Abilene, then two weeks at camp in New Mexico and then went to Florida! Payton Suggs spent two weeks with his grandparents Doug and Cyndi Suggs. Payton lives in League City, Texas. A group from the Lakeshore Church of Christ in Waco spent a week at Cherokee Home for Children.

Times are tough. In a store the other day, two young men in their 20’s were discussing jobs. It seems neither of them had a job and they had looked many places without any success. It was brought home to me the seriousness of our economy. There doesn’t seem to be much to be joyful about right now. And yet, we allow the circumstances of the moment to rob us of our joy.

25 Years Ago July 10, 1986 During a special recognition and awards program held in Stephenville recently, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Estep of Cherokee were presented a "Century Farm" Award from the Texas Department of Agriculture's Family Land Heritage Program. In a classified ad appearing in the June edition of the Pecan Press publication, Albany, Georgia claims to be the Pecan Capital of the world.

When you consider the numbers, it is easy to feel small and insignificant. According to the last census, the United States has over 308 million people, Texas has over 25 million people, and our congressional district has 650,000 people. How can any one person expect for their voice to be heard?

William and Jane Clark returned Tuesday from their vacation in Colorado. Jamie, Andrew, A.J. Houdyshell, Doug, Kristi, Jordan and Jaylee Messer of Lampasas, Boyd Clark and his two sons Eli and Silas also were there with them to enjoy all the cool weather that Colorado had to offer, and they reported that they had three days of rain.

The sound of the grass under my feet is horrible! It crunches and crackles like old dry straw. It looks like old straw for that matter. Brownwood got a brief rain last week, but nothing to write home about. It hurts to see the country so dry and barren. Everything is going up in price and our ranchers are hurting.

Last week we were working some older sheep to send to the sale but in the midst of that bunch of sheep was a ewe with newborn twin lambs. We did not have time to catch them and put them in a separate pen so we just kept working with those to go to the sale.

Curtis and Christine Rainbolt announce the birth of Zachary Ray Rainbolt. He was born in Fresno, Ca. on June 30th at 1:10 p.m. Zachary weighed 9 lbs. 5 oz. and was 22 inches long. Here we are, finding ourselves pretty well in the same situation as last week, as far as the weather outlook is concerned. A good number of the stock ponds and dirt tanks have fairly well dried up, most of the creeks have stopped running, the River is barely trickling, and some of the wells are sucking wind.

Receipts totaled 7515 head. The market was active with several new buyers from the Northern states buying cows, pairs and light weight calves. The stocker steers and heifers sold $4-$5 higher after last week’s $5-$7 advance. The 200-400 pound steers and heifers advanced another $10 higher this week. Feeder steers and heifers were steady to $2 higher after last week’s $2 to $5 advance.

Clarence William Ham, age 79 of the Locker Community, left this life on earth to join his Lord in Heaven on Sunday, July 17, 2011. Donald Vincent ("Jennie") Hammond, 92, passed away peacefully Thursday, July 7, 2011. Jennie was born on September 16, 1918, in Burnet to Eva (Darby) and Fielding Hammond.
