A small boy was playing with his buddies in the backyard, and the small boy’s dad overheard them talking. The conversation was amusingly one of those "my dad is better than your dad" routines. One boy proudly said, "My dad knows the mayor of our town!" Another said, "That’s nothing - my dad knows the governor of this state!" Wondering what was coming next in the program of bragging, the man heard his young boy say, "That’s nothing - my dad knows God!"

I had a great time hanging a new towel rack in their bathroom and doing other little chores. A boy asked, "Dad, don't they ever give showers for the groom?" "No, son," he answered. "There'll be plenty of storms for him after the bride begins to reign." But God made the home, and He meant it to be a heaven on earth. It will be, if the Bible is believed and prayer is practiced; if the Lord is the Head, the husband a king, the wife a queen, every son a prince and every daughter a princess. Looking for a happy home?

We fulfill one of the purposes for our existence when we seek God (Acts 17:26-27). When we seek Him, we consult with Him. We take our joys and difficulties to Him in prayer. We seek direction from Him by reading the Bible. We receive light from God as we ply the pages of the Bible (2 Peter 1:19). Ultimately we need strength and power from God.

The annual fight has begun for influence over your kids’ summer eating habits. In one corner: You and your crisp combos of nutrition knowledge, encouragement and control over what goes on the family dining table. In the other corner: spotty peer influences, ample opportunities for snacking away from home and a junk food marketing industry that bombards kids with an average of more than 11,000 TV ads a year. It sounds like a rigged fight, and to some extent it is.
