The charter of San Saba Masonic Lodge No. 612 was draped at the last meeting February 5th in memory of the passing of two Master Masons. James Elton Bennett was born 3 August 1922 in San Saba County. He was made an EA 1 November 1947, FC 3 January 1948 and raised to the degree of a Master Mason 6 March 1948 in San Saba Lodge.

This past week saw some of the coldest temperatures in San Saba in a very long time. Ice, snow, and bone chilling winds kept everything in the deep freeze for days. San Saba County's law enforcement, fire rescue departments and EMS were jumping all over the county, responding to motor vehicle accidents and one structure fire.

They checked the computers going back into the time the Bible was written and found it was close, but not close enough. The elapsed time that would be missing back in Joshua's day would have been a day of only 23 hours and 20 minutes and not a whole day like now.

Old Man Winter really paid us a visit this past week and just about overstayed his welcome, but watch out, he left, but will return this week for another Winter blast. Last week some people had frozen water lines and just got them thawed out in time for the next big freeze.

Texas AgriLife Extension-San Saba County will be hosting Do Well, Be Well diabetes classes each Tuesday in March (March 1st, 8th, 15th, 22rd, and 29th), 5:15 to 7:00 p.m. at Rylander Library. Malissa Mims, Director of the Dove Project in San Saba, will be part of a March on Monday, February 14th with the Texas Council on Family Violence in Austin, Texas. Malissa will personally meet with our District Legislators and ask for state funding for the Family Violence Program. She will be taking around 150 cards signed by people in this area that support full funding of family violence services.

On the coldest day of the year, a family lost their home and all of their belongings in a structure fire. San Saba Sheriff's deputies, San Saba EMS, Richland Springs, Elm Grove and San Saba Fire Departments all joined forces in an attempt to save the home but were unsuccessful. The cold weather hampered local fire departments as it did others all across the state with freezing temperatures and a blowing wind that had wind chill near or below zero. The Sheriff's office reported that the number of 911 calls for law enforcement, fire/rescue and EMS has jumped in the last two weeks. Sheriff Brown stated that, the fire/rescue departments across the county were already worn out from the response to grass fires the week prior to the ice storm and then the storm hit and everyone was back in action, some more than once. Since February 1st, there have been fourteen 911 calls for service involving multiple agencies in San Saba County.

Presidential candidate John Davis visited San Saba on Tuesday, February 1, coming in on not a wing and a prayer, but on a flat tire and a prayer. The weather was blistery and cold; however, he received a warm welcome from the small group anxious to meet him. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will host an open-house style public meeting to solicit public comments and input on the development of the 2012 Unified Transportation Program (UTP), which covers fiscal years (FY) 2012 through 2021 and the FY 2011 January out-of-cycle revision to the 2011-2014 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP). Receipts were reduced this week to 418 & 1707 head for the week due to the freezing rain and extreme cold weather. All classes of calves and yearlings sold steady in a strong market. Packer cows and bulls also sold steady compared to last week with the top packer cows selling for 78.00 cwt.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has finalized procedures for the upcoming referendum on the continuation of the Sorghum Checkoff Program and is announcing the dates it will conduct the referendum. For the program to continue, the Sorghum Promotion, Research, and Information order requires that a referendum be conducted no later than 3 years after the start of assessments, which began on July 1, 2008.

Dierdre Steele went home to be with her Lord Jesus on February 2, 2011, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous, 4½-year battle with cancer. Dierdre, age 50, was born in Galveston, Texas, on April 20, 1960. She and husband Bill were married in 1985 in Kansas City, Missouri, and settled in the San Antonio area 12 years ago.

Linda Hubbert Locklear, 58, of Alvord, Texas, passed away Friday, January 28, 2011 at her residence. She was born June 3, 1952 in San Saba, Texas, the daughter of Rena and Edgar Hubbert. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. On February 1, 1980, Linda and Dale Locklear were married in San Saba.

Marie Cothren, 87, of Denver City, passed away Thursday, January 27, 2011 in Lubbock. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, January 31 Marie was born October 26, 1923 in Bertram, TX to Charles and Neva Pruitt. She married Rube Cothren in San Saba, TX on April 10, 1943. They moved to Denver City from San Saba in 1950.

Due to the weather we had last week, we ended up playing only one game. After cancelling Bangs last Tuesday and rescheduling it for Thursday then cancelling Thursday and then cancelling Friday at Hamilton, we finally played Bangs on Saturday. Things got off to a slow start for the Dillos. Bangs jumped out to a 17-7 lead in the first quarter.

The first round of TAKS testing begins March 1st. In just 16 school days, students in grades 4, 7, 9, 10, & 11 will take the reading/writing tests. Daily attendance is important for children to be successful in school. Good attendance is also an important aspect of state funding for our school.

"Don’t Mess with Mother Nature" is a phrase I heard growing up and boy did she flex her muscle last week. Hazardous weather conditions threw a "monkey wrench" into District 6-2A last week. When the ice had cleared we were able to play Bangs this past Saturday in Dragonland. If you missed the game then you missed one of the greatest comebacks in Lady Dillo basketball history.

We have talked about what type of impact the possible legislative budget cuts will have on San Saba ISD. We are making plans and assessing all of the needs we have for our students. From this information we will make the necessary cuts accordingly. However, from that originally discussion I have been asked about how we can consider proposing a building program while we are also considering cutting the budget.
