Nominations are now being accepted for the 3rd Annual San Saba Awards Recognition Banquet to be held on March 10, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. in the San Saba Civic Center. These awards will recognize the efforts of individuals and companies that enhance and improve San Saba. Girls break out your grass skirts and guys put on your hawaiian shirts, as the theme of this year’s banquet is "It’s Hula Time In Texas".

Over the Holidays the San Angelo Standard Times named the All- West Texas 2A, and the All-West Texas Teams. Five Armadillos made the 2A team, they are: Deigo Gonzales, Kicker; Jack Whitten, Linebacker; Tucker Cromer, Linebacker; Gary Gant, Defensive Back; Will Sloan, Defensive Lineman. Three Armadillos made the All-West Texas Team.

On December, 29th 2010, Jesus Marin Martinez was killed in an accident involving heavy equipment off of CR 115. San Saba County EMS and Sheriff's Deputies responded and the victim was transported to Llano ER where he was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace, Alexander. San Saba ISD, Richland Springs ISD, and Cherokee ISD will have one upcoming EARLY RELEASE DAY. On Thursday, January 13, 2011, all three districts will observe an early release. As well, Friday, January 14, 2011 will be a school holiday for staff and students. Schools will resume regular operation on Monday, January 17, 2011. For the early release day, buses will depart from San Saba Elementary School at 12:35 pm and from San Saba Middle School at 12:45 pm.

They are safely in their underground burrows having survived last year and waiting for the warm spring weather of the new year. They are friendly, sociable, live in groups and are primarily vegetarians. Yes, they have enemies like snakes, hawks and owls to mention a few. And then there is the problem of floods and droughts.

We are now into a brand new year. We are experiencing some cooler temperatures but no rain to speak of. We enjoyed a very quiet New Year’s Eve here at our house. I have found that it comes right on in whether I am awake or not. I hope everyone had a safe and happy new year. Kicking off the new month will be the 42 tournament at Elm Grove on the 8th.

Dear Editor: I am going to address something very touchy to many; "The Great Job" of our Sheriff's Department. A few weeks ago, Brown put in the paper that he was "Head Law" and "The buck stops here." This past week he stated, "It's not only important to find and prosecute those who committed the crime, but to do our best to recover as much of the victim's property as possible."

January is the month of new beginnings and resolutions. Many of us make resolutions to be kinder and more thankful for what we have been provided and many make resolutions to work harder. One of my resolutions was to improve on recognizing the extra efforts of people in our school and our community.

Just now getting used to using the year 2010 on everything and now will have to start putting 2011. For some reason the 2011 is easier than using 2010. A good note is that we did get some much needed rain in December and there ishope for more rain this month. Lesa Preece held a Christmas party for some children of her Day Care that she operated before taking her present job.

Show me clergy who’ve seen all Christmas services go smoothly, and I’ll show you folks not yet ankle deep in the ministry ocean. As often as not, troubled waters aren’t even mentioned in the forecast. Veteran clerics, minds filled with memories of rituals and sacraments gone wrong, smile when colleagues new in the cloth brag about precision-like Christmas time programs pulled off without a bobble. Veteran clergy remember multiple programs that went awry.

A case of rabies was confirmed in the Cherokee area during the Christmas break. A female was bitten by a donkey and was transported to the hospital for the bite. The donkey was then tested for rabies and it was confirmed by the lab in Austin. The investigation of the case showed that the donkey, which was a pet had been bitten by a skunk.

During the holiday season this year, Sheriff Brown reported that there were no fatality crashes on our roadways, in San Saba County. Sheriff Brown also reported that there has not been a DWI arrest in San Saba County since the 20th of November, which was right before the holidays kicked off.

On January 9, an arctic high pressure system settled over west central Texas and caused bitter cold temperatures across the region. Low temperatures plummeted to the 4 to 8 degree range mainly south of Interstate 20. On February 11, an upper level low pressure system interacted with a modified arctic air mass to cause heavy snow over the area mainly north of a line from Sterling city to Brownwood.

Hunter up a tree, literally and figuratively Tarrant County Game Wardens John Padgett and Clint Borchardt found a vehicle parked in the tree line inside a Fort Worth park on Dec. 6. Over the Christmas break, the Armadillos played a couple of games. On Dec. 28, the Dillos hosted Comfort. San Saba score by quarter: 13, 10, 24, 11. Comfort score by quarter: 3 , 8, 10, 17. The Dillos took a first quarter lead of 13-3 and never relinquished the lead.

Faculty and staff returned to school on January 3rd for a work day. Students returned to school on Tuesday, January 4th. The second half of the year will pass quickly, with emphasis on upcoming TAKS testing. The Coyote Hardwood Basketball Classic was a success. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped make this tournament a success. Both the Coyotes and the Lady Coyotes won both of their games in the tournament.

I hope that all Lady Dillo fans and fellow San Sabans had a great and wonderful holiday. The Lady Dillos have been back on the hardwood for a while and have started District play. We played two district games before the Christmas break, played in the Thorndale Tournament over Christmas and played our third district game last Friday.

The JV boys basketball teams were back in action on December 28 after the Christmas break. On Tuesday, the boys took on the Comfort Bobcats, and won by the score of 35-11. A solid defensive effort, and the fact that The Dillos did a nice job of taking care of the ball proved to be the difference in this game.
