The 2010 Regional Pecan Show judging took place on December 8, 2010 at the Stephenville Extension Center. The following 17 counties were represented: Bell/Williamson, Burnett, Comanche, Eastland, Falls, Haskell, Knox, McLennan, Mills/Brown, Lampasas/Hamilton, Navarro, Palo Pinto/Parker, San Saba, Shackelford, Stephens, Wichita and Young Jack. There were 145 regional entries. San Saba had 34 entries of which 30 placed.

The San Saba County Commissioners Court met on Monday, December 13th at 9:00 a.m. in the County Judge’s Chambers. Commissioner Rickey Lusty called the meeting to order in the absence of County Judge Byron Theodosis. The Richland Springs Coyotes pulled off the first shut-out ever, in Six-Man State Final history, last Saturday at Shotwell Stadium in Abilene, against the Sterling City Eagles. The win capped off a brilliant 15-0, perfect season, as the Coyotes lay claim to their fourth State Championship in the last 7 years. Fox Sports Southwest provided the first web streamed broadcast of a Six-Man championship and the game was enjoyed by many of our Armed Forces, as far away as Afghanistan. < ...

The use of 15-passenger vans by churches, colleges, school systems, daycares, and other community organizations is common. Although convenient, these vans pose a great risk to passengers when proper safety precautions are not followed. Recently, two tragic crashes of 15-passenger vans in Georgia and New York have left 10 dead and 23 injured.

I have had a problem my whole life with wanting to know more and more and more—one of my professors called it "intellectual curiosity—and I am that way about knitting, too. My wife and I were blessed with the arrival of a new grandson several months ago. I enjoyed very much watching mother and new baby together. She got up early in the morning and worked in the kitchen. She had a little crib close by and she talked to him and he made funny little sounds back to her.

Well, looks like the rain chances were slim and now gone. We are all praying and looking for rain each and every day. Jackie Brister, his son Gene and Steve Rasez returned home from a successful deer hunting trip in Kansas. They each killed a buck and a doe. Last week Jackie Brister was on his way into San Saba when he became ill and had to pull over in front of Bob Millican’s home.

Our trip to Shotwell Stadium resulted in success! The Coyotes are State Champions once again. I won’t say it was the warmest day to play football, nor will I say it was the best game we ever played, but it had the best result. I feel for those other young athletes and parents, who worked so hard and persevered, only to lose the final game.

The Pierian Study Club held their annual Guest Christmas Party December 9, 2010 at the beautiful home of Ann McElroy that overlooks the Colorado River from every venue throughout the home. This 8 point buck was shot by Mahaila McCoury, age 9 of San Saba. Mahaila is the daughter of Waylon and Sarah McCoury. She shot it on the McCoury Ranch on December 8.

Receipts totaled 7024 head for the week. A choice offering of cattle were very active with demand good on all classes. The stocker steers sold $3 to $5 higher and the heifer mates sold $2 higher. Several changes have been made for the 2011 Youth Fair on January 13-15, 2011. The most prominent change is the location. Due to space problems, the Fair will be held at the Civic Center. Registration will take place from 2 to 4:30 p.m. (note the time change) at the Civic Center.

Gilbert "Jacob" Solis, age 18, of Brownwood passed away Monday December 6, 2010 at Brownwood Regional Medical Center. Funeral Mass was held on Thursday December 9 at 10:30am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brownwood. Interment will be private at a later date. Rosary was Wednesday December 8 at 7:30pm at the Blaylock Funeral Home Chapel. Jacob was a long time resident of Brownwood and attended Brownwood High School.

John Earl McPherson, Sr. 79, of Richland Springs, TX passed away on Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at the Brownwood Regional Hospital. John was born on February 21, 1931 in Williamson County, TX to Samuel Grant McPherson and Ruby Cooper McPherson. John and Rosemary Treadwell were united in marriage on November 12, 1949 in Llano, TX.

Paul Sewell Warlick of Mullin, TX passed away December 11, 2010 at Goldthwaite Health & Rehab Center at the age of 91. Paul was born September 8, 1919 in San Saba TX to James Wyre Warlick and Elizabeth Sewell Warlick. On November 7, 1947, Paul and Rozell Ganell Wright were married in San Saba, TX and lived between San Saba County and Mills County for the past 30 years.

Robert G. Bryden III, 69, of Arlington, TX passed away on Sunday, December 5, 2010 in Arlington. Robert was born on February 18, 1941, in Brawley, CA. Robert proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. He retired as a Quality Control Inspector in the Circuit Board Industry. Robert was an avid golfer and was a longtime resident of Arlington, TX. Royce Campbell, 75, of San Saba, TX passed away on Saturday, December 11, 2010 at the Brownwood Regional Hospital. Royce was born on June 18, 1935 in Cass County, TX to Rufus Edgar Campbell and Annie Livingston Campbell. Before her passing on March 12, 1999, Joyce Sutton Campbell and Royce enjoyed forty-three years of marriage.

On Tuesday, Dec. 7, the Armadillos hosted the Goldthwaite Eagles. The Dillos took a first quarter lead 14-10. In the second quarter the Eagles clawed their way back in it and trailed the Dillos by one at the half 27-26. In the third quarter the Dillo defense did a good job and held the Eagles to two points and led the Eagles 39-28 at the end of three quarters.

WOW! The Richland Springs Coyotes are 2010 Division II 6-Man State Champions. The Coyotes, looking like a well-oiled machine, methodically controlled the game on both offense and defense. When the dust settled at Abilene’s Shotwell Stadium, the Coyotes were victorious by a 46-0 margin. The road to the state championship takes over 4 months, from the first day of practice to the culmination in the state championship game.

FCCLA STAR Event teams have been hard at work finding sponsors, gathering and saving to prepare for their up coming competition and events. The "Go Blue Team", made up of Allison Christian, Allison Nettleship, and Jessica Ramirez, decided to create a raffle to help the San Saba Child Welfare Board buy presents for needy children this holiday season.

The San Saba Lady Dillos had a great week as they captured the Championship at the Mason Tournament and avenged an earlier loss downing Goldthwaite on their home floor. We defeated Goldthwaite 48-38. This was a "knockdown, dragout" part 2. This game was like a district ballgame. There were two really good teams competing and we had a big third quarter that propelled us to the win.

This past Friday, 26 middle school band students traveled to the Early Middle School to compete in the annual Region 7 Middle School All Region tryouts. SSMS band students competed against other middle school students from region 7 in class 1A- 3A (over 350 students) to earn a chair placement in one 86 piece region band.

The JV boys basketball team has been very busy. Last Tuesday, we played Coleman here, and won by the score of 46-30. Scoring for the Dillos was; Kolton Ellis (2), Luis Vega (3), Sean Argote (6), Kelan Verette (7), Ryan Guidroz (16), Russell Lowe (2), Joe Lindsey (2), Aaron Perez (5), and Ruston Ellis (5). On Thursday, the JV boys traveled to Hamilton for the first of a 3 day tournament that our varsity and JV both competed in.

We traveled to Coleman last Saturday for a small round robin tournament to allow our players a little extra playing time. We first faced the Coleman Bluecats. The game was close for three quarters. In the fourth, we tried to play man defense and instead of forcing turnovers, we allowed some easy shots.

Last week was a big week for the JV Lady Dillos as we won 4 of our 6 games for the week. On Tuesday, we took on Goldthwaite, and then on Thursday-Saturday, we played in the Mason Tournanemnt. All the games were great for us and help us build on the year even more. On Tuesday, Goldthwaite came over here to play us.

It is hard to believe, but the first semester of school is just about to be over. December 17 th will be the last day of the first semester for the Armadillos. The first eighty-one (81) days of school were packed with many events and much progress. The second semester of school will begin on January 3, 2011 after a two week break to observe the Christmas Holidays.
