It’s almost time for making this Christmas a little brighter for children-in-need by supporting our annual "Angels Unaware" program sponsored by the San Saba County Child Welfare Board. Shortly after Thanksgiving, they place a very old Christmas tree decorated with little "angels" in the atrium of the Arrowhead Bank building in San Saba.

The Richland Springs Coyotes defeated Jonesboro last Friday in the Regional match-up. See complete game coverage by Mike Cohn on page 9.
The Coyotes will be up against the Calvert Trojans for the Quarter-Final game this Friday, November 26th in Moody at 7:30 p.m.

Construction at San Saba River Nature Park is under way following a brief ceremony Nov. 5 with local elected officials, the Burnet contractor performing the park work and LCRA Board and staff members. LCRA is partnering with the City of San Saba on the new park. LCRA will develop it and the city will operate and maintain it.

The entry categories include cakes, candy, cookies, fancy nuts, pies, breads, appetizers and sugar free. Recipes beginning with mixes are welcomed. The judges are interested in taste, originality, texture, attractiveness and, of course, the use of pecans.
The registration time, 7:30 – 9:00 a.m., is early so you or a friend can bring your entries to the east side of the courthouse on your way to work or school.

The Board of Trustees of San Saba ISD held a regular meeting on Monday, November 15th at 6 p.m. in the Central Administration Office. President, Darrin Barker called the meeting to order and established a Quorum with all Trustees in attendance. Board member, Kevin Shahan gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags.

What’s the original convenience food? Fruit! All you have to do is wash and eat. And guess what? Dried fruit does not even require any preparation. It is easy to pack and does not spoil. However, compared to fresh fruit, dried fruit can contain more calories by weight.
What are some of the advantages to eating fresh fruit?

November 28, 1985
Darel Terry, Commander of American Legion Post #27, presented a check in the amount of $500 to Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie McBride to assist with expenses incurred when the couple's 18 year old son, David was burned in an accident September 28th.
As of noon December 31, San Saba County will have a new Ambulance Service.

flowed under the Harkeyville bridge since this humble scribe has penned an article. Let’s just say that life has been fairly intense around the Harkey House since we last visited. Fact is, I’ve been saving some "Pearls"

It is that special time of the year again and we are looking forward to the holidays. Christmas used to be my favorite holiday but now it may be Thanksgiving. One reason is all the family tries to get together and the other is all the good food. We have been calling on the phone and each family member has a special dish they make and when you put them all together, WOW!

Turkey Day, according to the weather report it is going to be in the 50’s. The wind has been something else to have to contend with too.

We had a short week and I for one am totally glad. It was a pretty hectic last week. Russ and I spent Thursday in Temple. I had blood work to do, and it was my birthday, so we had a great day just the two of us. Friday I had a group of my students singing happy birthday to me when out of nowhere something hit me in the head.

Emily Smith, a senior at RSHS, and Colton Young, a freshman at RSHS, rehearse for The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. The RSHS Drama Dept. will present the Christmas play on December 5th, Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m. with refreshments to follow the presentation. If you want more than a few good laughs as some of the world’s worst children deal with the holiday season, come see The Best Christmas Pageant Ever at the cafetorium in Richland Springs.

For an individual service project for the RSHS National Honor Society, Krista Maultsby and Sara Hedley held a cupcake/bake sale at school to raise $125.00 for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation during breast cancer awareness week. Susan G. Komen fought breast cancer with her heart, body, and soul.

In honor of the 40th Anniversary of the Official Texas State Arts & Crafts Fair, the Texas Arts & Crafts Educational Foundation is seeking entries for the Commemorative Poster Contest that thematically celebrate the Fair’s 40 year history of promoting fine arts and crafts in the State of Texas. The contest is now open to artists of any age.

The LCRA Board of Directors this week approved new members to its seven Regional Councils that act as communication links between LCRA and the communities it serves in the Colorado River basin.
Joining the LCRA San Saba/Llano Regional Council are Grant Appleton, Brady; Don Daniel, Mason; and Tom Guthrie, Goldthwaite.
The council program is a mechanism for two-way communication between LCRA and communities in its service area on LCRA issues, projects and activities.

On Monday November 15th, the 2nd grade cub scouts of Pack 55 visited our local San Saba County Jail. Sheriff Allen Brown hosted the boys and their
parents/guardians and shared historic facts about the jail, including that our jail was built in 1884 and is currently the oldest operating jail facility in the entire nation.

DPS is urging Texas motorists to put safety first on the menu while traveling this Thanksgiving weekend.
"Texans should focus on arriving safely at their destinations and make sure this Thanksgiving is about making memories-not dealing with tragedy," said David Baker, assistant director in charge of Highway Patrol. "Impaired and reckless drivers are a given and motorists should take this into account and drive defensively."

The San saba County Sheriff's Office wants to remind everyone traveling to have a safe and wonderful holiday this year.
We wish to remind you to be sure and wear your seatbelt and make sure and seatbelt in all of those wonderful children. We also want to make sure that everyone slows down and watches out for the other drivers.

The United States Army will be conducting intensive helicopter training in the area of San Saba County during the period of November 30th - December 18th, 2010.
This training will be conducted during both day and night. Aircraft will be operating from 1,500 Feet to 6,000 Feet. Aircraft types will include AH-64D Apache Longbow, UH-60 Blackhawks, and UH-1 Hueys.

Analyn Bohensky, daughter of Michael and Amy Bohensky of San Saba, has been selected as a candidate in the Distinguished Youth of Texas Scholarship and Recognition Program to be held November 26-28 at the Marriott Rivercenter Hotel in San Antonio. During the weekend competition, two students will be chosen to receive a $1,000.00 United States Savings Bond and the right to serve as a State Program Titleholder for one year.

San Saba County: The Salvation Army will again be working this Christmas season to raise money in order to meet the needs of hurting people in San Saba County. The red kettles will be out in larger towns and cities across the nation, but here in San Saba County, they need your help too.
This year we have helped approximately 50 families in San Saba County.

The Wallace Creek Extension Education Club met Thursday, November 18, 2010 at the San Saba County Museum.
Lynn Blankenship called the meeting to order. Roll call was answered to "What is your favorite pie?" The minutes were read by Doris Cates. The treasurer's report was given. There was no council report.

On October 3, Terrell County Game Warden Saul Aguilar walked into the camp of a group of archery hunters. Focused on the skinning rack, Warden Aguilar worked his way over to review three properly tagged mule deer heads. As he made contact with the group to check hunting licenses, a more than generous hunter greeted him with everyone’s license in his hands.

Receipts totaled 3024 head for the week. The market remains very active with stocker steers steady to $2 higher while stocker heifers sold steady. Feeder steers remain steady from last week and feeder heifers were $3 lower. Packer cows sold $2 higher and packer bulls were $1 higher. Stocker cows and pairs sold in good demand.

Carl Casbeer, 62, of San Saba passed away Thursday, November 4,2010 at Lampasas Nursing Home and Rehab Center in Lampasas, Tx.
Carl was a truck driver. He served in the United States Army in Vietnam and also served in the National Guard. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the American Legion.

Carolyn Ramirez, 56, of Richland Hills, TX passed away on Monday, November 15, 2010 at North Richland Hill Hospital in Richland Hills, TX.
Carolyn was born on May 15, 1954 in Fort Worth, TX to Morton C. Jameson and Mildred Houser Jameson.
Carolyn and Julian Ramirez Jr. were united in marriage on May 24, 1997 in Whitney, TX.

Services for Guy Daryl McDaniel 87, of Harker Heights were at 11 AM Monday, November 22, 2010 at the Killeen City Cemetery with Rev. Jimmy Towers officiating. Mr. McDaniel passed away on November 18, 2010 in Temple.
He was born June 10, 1923 to Denzil and Augusta McNatt McDaniel in Lordsburg, NM., he moved to Texas at a very young age.
He served four years in the Navy before settling in Killeen, He was the assistant manager for William Cameron Lumber Co.

James Morrison, age 92, of Richland Springs passed away November 21, 2010 in Brownwood.
His wishes were to be cremated.
A memorial service will be held on December 4, 2010 at Spring Creek Church of Christ in San Saba County.
Services have been entrusted to the care of Blaylock Funeral Home, Brownwood.

The Jonesboro Eagles, undefeated at 11-0, were flying high Friday night, soaring into their Regional matchup with the Richland Springs Coyotes in Comanche. The enthusiasm level, was elevated even more, when Denim Reeves was sacked on the first play from scrimmage, a rare loss of yardage for the Coyote spreadback.

The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met November 11, 2010 and had a scramble with the team of Jo Ann Snow, Sandee Hartley, and Dorothy Sterner defeating Hattie Rogers, Jo Anne Hardy, and Janet Hoyt. Janet is the play day chair for November. November 18 was cards for the girls and then Thanksgiving and we have so much to be thankful for and then it is the glorious Christmas season!

The Richland Springs Independent School District board of trustees voted to adopt a resolution of acknowledgement for the Make Education a Priority campaign, an initiative created to encourage state officials protect educational spending as they begin to evaluate which programs need to be cut back to offset large budget deficiencies during the next legislative session.

The San Saba Armadillos had their season come to an end last Friday night at Hawk Stadium in Pflugerville. The Schulenburg Shorthorns defeated the Armadillos 24-16. San Saba ended the season with a 6-6 record and a good outlook for next year.
Schulenburg won the toss and deferred. San Saba received the opening kick and started at the 20 yard line.

Set and Enforce Family Rules
My teenage son thinks I’m so unfair because I try to set and enforce rules like a reasonable curfew or no going out on school nights. He always argues that none of his friends’ parents set rules. Am I being too strict?
At some point in our youth, most of us tried to extend our curfew or get out of a chore by saying, "Well, so-and-so’s parents don’t have those same rules,"
