San Saba Garden Club Yard of the Month - Jarvis and Patty Shaw’s home at1302 West Woodlawn has been selected as the San Saba Garden Club’s October Yard of the Month. The Shaw home was built by Patty’s father Dougal A. Cameron in 1946. Mr. Cameron built several homes in San Saba in the post war years.

The 4th Quarter San Saba County/Scott & White Blood Drive will be on Tuesday, November 2nd from 1-6 p.m. at the Courthouse. Yes, this is election day - - come to town and vote and then come to the courthouse to give blood. A member of Congressman Mike Conaway's staff will be in San Saba Wednesday, November 3rd, to visit personally with constituents. The representative will be at the City of San Saba Council Chamber at 303 S. Clear from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. The public will be able to share concerns, request help on a federal issue or ask any questions they may have.

GED classes will begin November 1st, at the San Saba High School. Classes will run from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. each Monday and Wednesday evening. Interested persons should enter the double doors at the high school that face 8 th Street. Classes will be held in room 20 on the north wing.

In February, 1991, one pound of bacon sold in San Saba for 99 cents, a two hundred acre ranch with cabin and water well located in San Saba County was offered for sale for $575 per acre, and a "Hamburger Special" in a local restaurant was advertised for 99 cents.

San Saba High School teacher, Amy Bippert Bohensky, was inducted in the Lone Star Conference Hall of Honor on Saturday, October 23, during halftime of the Angelo State homecoming game. The Lone Star Conference Hall of Honor recognizes outstanding individuals who have brought pride and honor to the conference through their contributions as an athlete or who have demonstrated a long-term commitment to the betterment of the conference as a coach or administrator.

The Fall Festival will be held on the Cherokee Football Field Saturday night; pumpkin carving and meal at 5:00 p.m.; costume judging 5:30p.m.; carnival 6:00p.m. There will be many booths and great food in the concession stand. In all areas of our lives we have rules that we must live by. Sometimes we resent these rules. At other times we are glad they are in place for us. If there were no rules anyone could do anything one wanted and it would be okay, with no harsh consequences. Take, for instance, the rule that the laws of the land have stated about driving while drinking.

Jackie Brister has already been busy gathering pecans this year. It is getting that time for everyone who has pecans. Some will wait until the frost comes and the leaves drop before shaking the trees, but some early varieties are ready now. The crows that love pecans know when the early variety is ready for easy pickings. Lola Morris reported that her nephew from Eola received two and sixth-tenths of rain Saturday .

The Wallace Creek Extension Education Club met Thursday, October 21, 2010 at the club house. The business meeting was conducted. Plans were made for our projects for November. November 2, Tuesday, will be the Health Fair at the Civic Center, also the day to Vote. We know what time of year it is by what vegetation is doing. Thanks to the Tropical Storms we received so much rain that now we have Maximilian Sunflowers, Gay Feathers, and lots of other native plants blooming away. Unfortunately we also have the dreaded insidious KR Bluestem. This grass KR Bluestem is so difficult to mow that you either have to set your mower real low to almost scalp your lawn or pastures or you have to mow over again and again.

Doris Arnim Bryant 92, of San Saba passed away Wednesday, October 20,2010 at Eventide Nursing Home. Doris was born December 05,1917 the daughter of Edward O. Arnim. The San Saba Booster Club is sponsoring a Little Dillo Pal Program this year. Each Varsity player has a student that was assigned to them at the beginning of the year. Last week the lil’ Dillos participated in the pep rally. They shadowed their "Big" Dillos and experienced the whole pep rally as if they were actually "big Dillos!"

San Saba's 8th grade Dillos spotted the Coleman 8th Bluecats 14 points in the first quarter at Rogan Field. The Dillos came roaring back to take the lead and never gave it up for a 48-22 victory. Gabe Zimmer had a great night with 318 yards rushing. Coleman kicked to San Saba to begin the contest.

The San Saba Armadillos defeated the Coleman Bluecats 48-6 last Friday night at Rogan Field to keep their district title chances alive. The win coupled with a loss by Sonora to the Ozona Lions keeps the title chances for four schools in doubt. The Harper Longhorns beat Junction to stay tied with San Saba and Sonora at 2-1 in district while Ozona went to 3-0.

October 10th and 11th, the FCCLA local officers traveled to Dallas at the Hilton Anatol for "Peer Education." Richland Springs Junior High beat Brookesmith Junior High 28-6 at Coyote Field last Thursday night. The story here is not in the stat sheet or even in the score itself. The story is that the Brookesmith Mustangs even bothered to play the game at all. Officially, a forfeit, as the Mustangs have been plagued all year with UIL eligibility issues. They had every reason to bow out and not play against the DII #1 ranked Coyotes.

In September I was selected to be a participant in the Lamar University Superintendent’s Academy. This group provides superintendents with intense training that further prepares them for the role of the superintendent and the ever changing dynamics of the position. Most of our sessions for this academy are held on the campus of Lamar University in Beaumont, but the most recent session took us to New York City.

Enrique (Kiki) Camarena was a Drug Enforcement Administration Agent who was tortured and killed in Mexico in 1985. Camarena worked his way through college, served in the Marines and became a police officer. When he decided to join the US Drug Enforcement Administration, his mother tried to talk him out of it.
