The 3rd Annual Super Saturday is set for this Saturday, October 23rd. from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There are 26 vendors signed up so far to sell arts, crafts, antiques, and collectibles. More are expected to match the 40 plus booths set up last year. Food and refreshment vendors will be set up and there will be live music and entertainment each hour. If you're interested in a booth, or need more information contact Kaci Morrison at 622-4495 and leave a message.

A Grand Opening and ribbon cutting for the new ALCO store was held Wednesday, October 13 starting at 7:00 a.m. Customers were met with a friendly greeting; opportunities to sign up for a $100 shopping spree; a 42" PlasmaTV; coffee, soft drinks, cookies, cake; and a store full of merchandise that did not require a 40 mile trip to purchase. Before the ribbon cutting, City Mayor, Ken Jordan welcomed ALCO as an asset to the community.

The San Saba County Commissioners Court met on Tuesday, October 12th at 9:00 a.m. in the County Judge’s Chambers. County Judge Byron Theodosis called the meeting to order and welcomed citizen’s and guests to the Court. The San Saba City Council met for a Public Hearing on Tuesday, October 12th prior to the regular monthly meeting. Shawn Oliver, Mayor Pro Tem, called the meeting to order and announced a quorum present. Council member Martha Leigh Whitten gave the invocation followed by everyone joining for the pledges to the American and Texas flags. A public hearing was held to receive comments concerning a requested variance in the zoning for property located at 1102 W.

The San Saba High School Golden Armadillo Band under the direction of Brian Sours, assistant director Shawn Messer, and color guard coordinator Lauren Shero performed at the annual UIL Marching Assessment in Brady on October 16. The band is assessed using a standardized rubric that outlines musicianship, marching, tone quality, and various other aspects of marching band.

In February, 1991, one pound of bacon sold in San Saba for 99 cents, a two hundred acre ranch with cabin and water well located in San Saba County was offered for sale for $575 per acre, and a "Hamburger Special" in a local restaurant was advertised for 99 cents.

Most of us will be attending a family or community holiday dinner in the next couple of months. They are great fun and the food is out of this world. Seeing and visiting with family and friends is an important part of dinner. There is a also a pretty good chance there will be leftover food.

Last week the trapped miners in Chile were rescued. What an amazing sight it was to see some of these men as they were safe above the ground and the rejoicing that was taking place. These men were, at first, considered lost but then were found alive. Ten weeks later the first of the thirty three men came from the pit of the earth. While these men have been trapped, life has continued moving forward.

It has been a month since we have had any rain and we sure could use some moisture. We just had a small crowd for the gospel singing last Saturday night. We missed Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Campbell. We sure do appreciate Kay McKee being so faithful to come and play the piano for us.

Well, we keep waiting for that cold front with the wet stuff, but so far it's dry and warm. We all need to keep our farmers and ranchers in our prayers concerning water. We need a lot of the wet stuff and need it soon. Well, on to the news and happenings in the Sheriff's Office. Need to clear something up at the jail.

We were working around the barn when she drove up and said, " They're Here!" and sped off to the local post office to pick up the baby chickens she had ordered. Shortly she came back and unloaded the small box they came in and started carefully placing them one by one in the big wooden box in the garage.

The Bend Community fund raiser went off as expected Saturday night, but there was some unexpected problems when the electricity went off just about the same time as the cake auction started. It went off about three times and finally stayed off for some time. After a few minutes it was decided to continue with the aid of flash lights.

I am delighting in our weather. Delight is the verb I have to use, because it is as close to heaven as it gets! I watched the sun come up Saturday morning from the chair on my front porch. There was only a wisp of a breeze as I sat snuggled under my blanket.

Cattle rustling, a crime many people associate with outlaws from the days of Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin, is on the rise in 21st century Texas. The Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA) reports that in 2009, approximately 7,400 head of cattle were stolen in Texas - 1,000 more than the previous year. With steer and heifer calves worth as much as $650 or more, cattle losses to rustling can devastate a rancher's livelihood.

Pictured above is a Southern Yellow Jacket hive which was under the mobile home of James May on the Colorado River, in the community of Red Bluff. The yellow jackets came through a pipe hole in the floor by the hundreds and stung James nine times, his wife two times, and a 12 month-old baby three times.

Friends of Rylander Library are holding the 2nd Annual Art Show and Open House Friday, November 5th & Saturday, November 6th from 10:00AM until 2:00PM each day at Rylander Memorial Library. A Candlelight Vigil Service was held at the Mill Pond Pavilion on Wednesday, October 13th, from 7:30 to 8:30, sponsored by the Dove Project for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The annual membership meeting of the members of Central Texas Telephone Cooperative, Inc. was held on Saturday, October 2, 2010 at the Mills County Civic Center in Goldthwaite, Texas. The Hill Country Livestock Raisers Association and the Texas AgriLife Extension Service Llano County will hold its Fall Beef Cattle Field Day on Saturday, October 23, 2010 at the Llano County Community Center. The program will start at 9:00 a.m. and last until approximately 3:00 p.m. This is the first year we will hold the field day on a Saturday instead of during the week.

It appears that we have made it through the middle of October, as well as already expending the first third of the Fall season. We should take care as to not be pessimistic with whining of something being gone before it’s really over, but the time does seem to be sliding by fairly fast, now-days.

Receipts totaled 2299 head for the week. The market was better toward the end of the week after the large increase in corn prices on Friday of last week with the USDA coming out with a bearish report on corn yields. Corn has moved from $3.50/bu to $5.70/bu just in a short period of time which has increased the cost of gain.

Vicki Laine Keele Brown, age 49, a twenty seven year resident of Sierra Vista, passed away October 8, 2010 in Tucson, AZ after a long and hard fought battle with cancer. Early September the 25th, the San Saba County 4-H’ers filed into the San Saba Homemaking Building to begin 4-H Food Fun Day. As they signed in, the adult leaders prepped the learning stations and set up the day’s activities. The 4-H’ers would be learning how to make fresh pasta and homemade bread. The first lesson the seventeen 4-H’ers began was baking their own homemade bread.

The 7th grade Dillos played last Thursday and won the ballgame 28-0 the Fourth defensive shutout for the year, the kids played a great game. Improving their record to 5-1.The game started off as a defensive battle with strong plays by Emilono Rocha who had a fumble recovery, John Watson, Holt Oliver had an interception, Nathaniel Rutherford, Joey Salinas, Ramiro Coronado, Carter Eden and Ehren Thomas.

Sonora's 8th grade Colts defeated the San Saba 8th grade Dillos by a score of 30-6. Sonora was a big and talented team. They did a lot of things really well. We hung with them for a half before succumbing to their strength. The game was played in Sonora. Sonora kicked to San Saba to start the game.

Fifth grade students at Richland Springs will attend the Farm Safety Day in San Saba on Wednesday, Oct. 27 with fifth grade sponsor Sue Ransom. The San Saba Armadillos lost to the Sonora Broncos last Friday night in a game that some were calling the district title game. Both teams are expected to make the playoffs and some felt this game would determine who wins the district title. Ethan Morriss of Sonora showed why he is the All West Texas 2A quarterback.

A week ago this past Thursday, October 7, the San Saba JV football team traveled to Harper. The game did not start off too good as the Longhorns returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and the two point conversion failed. Harper kicked to us, and we fumbled. This allowed the Longhorns to run a reverse pass play for another easy score, again the conversion failed.

The Richland Springs Junior High Coyotes took advantage of 7 fumbles by the Lohn JH Eagles, recovering 4, at Coyote Field last Thursday evening. The fledgling Eagles never could get their offense out of the nest, as the Coyote defense seemed to have all the answers on this night. Storm Teel took the first play from scrimmage to paydirt with a nice run, with a great cut block by Jacob Cohn and a beautiful cutback, Teel goes 55 yds to set the table for the evening.
