A new ALCO Store will open in San Saba, Texas, on Wednesday, October 13. The store’s Grand Opening celebration will feature a ribbon-cutting ceremony for local dignitaries and store staff beginning at 7:45 a.m. Refreshments will be served. The 22,000 square foot store, located at 152 F-M 1030, will employ 20 associates.

Cherokee Home for Children is preparing for their annual benefit auction to be held Saturday, September 25th with bidding beginning at 9:00 a.m. Items for auction will include household items, farm equipment, TVs, tools, exercise equipment, antiques, furniture and appliances. New items are arriving daily for this annual event. The public is invited to attend and refreshments will be available on site.

The Cherokee Volunteer Fire Department held its annual fundraiser on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at the Cherokee Fire Hall. Many folks enjoyed great tasting food, consisting of steaks, pork, and fried catfish along with many dishes and desserts that were provided by the women of the community. Cherokee VFD raised over $22,000 to help pay their expenses, upkeep on equipment, and purchase of new equipment.

The San Saba County Commissioners Court met on Monday, September 13th at 9 a.m. in the County Judge’s Chambers. County Judge Byron Theodosis called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone to the Court. At the Texas Attorney General’s Office, Texas’ senior citizens are a top priority year round. This month they are getting heightened attention nationwide because it is Older Americans Month. Like all law enforcement agencies, we rely on our fellow Texans to help deter crime. So this month, we are focusing on educating Texans about scams that target their senior friends and family members.

Lunches Schools are back in session. For some families this means packing lunches, although the cost of school lunches is hard to beat, what is on the menu is not always what a child likes. Eating every day in the lunch room can get old and taking a lunch can also get old.

The best news of this week is the 4 to 5 inches of rain around the area that accompanied the hurricane. Lawn mowers are being kept busy again. Recently, I was listening to my mother read about the healing of the man by the pool of Bethesda. (John 5:1-9) I’ve read this account many times before. Perhaps you have as well. But it occurred to me as I heard his story yet again, that I’ve never given this man enough credit. In fact, I’ve even ridiculed him for giving excuses when Jesus asked him if he wanted to be healed.

The windshield of a Japanese airliner was damaged while flying over southern japan. It's believed that the stone ws thrown from a volcano. There were 99 people aboard, but the pilot managed to land the plane savfely just minutes after the accident. Anger is a common sin. Just about everyone blows his top.

The old man weather was kind to this area Tuesday and Wednesday of last week. Folks around the Bend received over a three-inch rain over the two days. Lampasas and areas farther on East received too much rain and folks have been struggling to clean up after the downpour. Brownwood had over a five-inch rain causing the Colorado river to rise.

Boy, did we ever have a good rain last week. We had over four inches, but many people reported rains of over five inches. We certainly needed that particular blessing. It was supposed to stay cool, but it didn’t seem too cool to me Friday night. Kathy Brockman and I had gate duty for the varsity game against Lingleville.

Texas farmers and ranchers have long made Texas a leader in agriculture. In recent years, Texas has also emerged as a leader in communications technology. As we move forward, we must make sure no Texan is left behind on the information superhighway. Access to services like high-speed Internet is necessary to close the digital divide between urban and rural communities in our state.

Dear Editor: Yes, this alcohol issue is about profit and about money. The last time I checked, it was not a sin to make a profit, and yes, I am concerned about the outcome, mainly, the economic survival of our city. People are killed and injured by guns and many traffic accidents are caused by people texting or talking on their cell phones so should we ban guns and cell phones too?

The Pierian Study Club met September 9, 2010 at the beautifully restored Soap’s Place at the old Soap Hardaman home. Teressa and Dennis Hardaman have turned this into a beautiful facility for parties, weddings, receptions, and weekend retreats and Teressa catered the event. The rainfall which blessed our Bottoms, Pecans that is, last week did an excellent job of putting down much needed moisture in fine fashion. Seemed like it was fairly general over most of the County, as we’ve heard reports of around 2.5" up to about 5" from different areas and communities.

Receipts totaled 1313 head for the week. The market was strong and active with stocker steers and heifers selling steady and feeder steers and heifers also selling steady. Packer cows were $3 higher and bulls were $2 higher. A large offering of open F-1 Tiger stripe heifers were sold with good demand with one set of 45 averaging 710 @ 1.45 and a set of 40 averaging 810 lbs @ 1.36.

Raymond Bourke, 99, of San Saba passed away Sunday, September 12, 2010 at Llano Memorial Hospital. As the relentless rain hammered down on top of the San Saba Civic Center on the evening of September seventh, the San Saba County 4-H’ers and Adult leaders hosted their annual 4-H Awards banquet. The 7th grade Dillos traveled to Wall last Thursday and played a great game. The game started off a defensive battle with strong plays by Carter Eden, Emilono Rocha, Garrett Pringle, John Watson, Nathaniel Rutherford, Joey Salinas, Ramiro Coronado and Ehren Thomas. The 8th Dillos opened the 2010 season with a 20-8 defeat by the Wall 8th grade Hawks. The young Dillos played good defense, but the offense played Santa Claus by giving up the ball for easy Wall scores. San Saba kicked to Wall to open the game. Wall proceeded to drive the ball with a series of run plays and completing 2 passes.

The San Saba Armadillos fell to the Wall Hawks 33-24 last Friday night at Hawk Stadium in Wall. San Saba fell behind early 20-0 and was unable to catch up. The offense moved the ball well with 207 yards on the ground and 144 through the air. Wall had 300 yards rushing and completed 1 pass for 20 yards. San Saba won the toss and deferred to the second half.

Andy Dozier finished in 4th place in the boy’s varsity division of the San Saba Cross Country meet last Saturday. Amber Bell finished in 10th place in the girl’s JV division. Holly Vaughn crossed the finish line in 15th place in the 7th grade girl’s division. Julia Phillips, president of Eta Omicron Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International attended the Area VIII Workshop in the Parker Academic Building on the University of Mary Hardin Baylor campus in Belton, Texas, on August 14, 2010. She was one of the seventy-four participants. Each Chapter in the District contributed a check for twenty dollars to cover the expenses of the Workshop so there was no registration fee and lunch was not served as the workshop adjourned before lunch.

The Cherokee Indians played their hearts out last Friday night at Gustine, but came up short on the scoreboard for the 3rd straight game. The quickness of the Tiger running backs gave the Indians trouble all night. The Indians lost 2 fumbles that stopped potential scoring drives. Gustine scored first midway through the 1st quarter on a 1 yard run.

The Cherokee Jr. High football team opened their 2010 season with a 33-0 shutout over the Gustine Tigers. Baylor Jordan scored touchdowns on runs of 20 yards, 11 yards, and 8 yards and also hauled in an interception. Rolando Davis scored on a 20 yard run and recovered 1 Tiger fumble.

Back on August 26, the 2010 football season began with our JV team hosting the Ballinger Bearcats at Rogan Field. Ballinger busted several big plays against our defense. Offensively we struggled, but managed to score a touchdown by Kelan Verette on a run play. Overall, we fought hard, but did not come out on top.

The San Saba Ladies Golf Association hosted the Pecan Classic Fall 4-Lady Tournament on September 11, 2010 with 16 teams, 64 ladies, from all over central Texas. The ladies were welcomed to the event by the Pro Keith Harris and the club president, Anita Miles, and served donuts, coffee, and juice.

The school accountability system is very interesting and very layered. There are several different types and depths to this system. What types of accountability exists? Schools are looked primarily in two broad categories and then those categories include MANY different layers. The two primary categories are Financial Accountability and Academic Accountability.

My 17-year-old lives with his father in another state. He drinks and has used pot and some other drugs. I don’t know how often these things take place. Our son said he’s not doing anything anymore and his dad believes him. I’m not convinced. I let my son go live with his father because he wanted to be with his dad.
