It was a little girl''s first day at school, and the teacher asked her, "What's your father's name?" "Daddy", she answered. "Yes, of course," smiled the teacher, "but by what name does your mother call him?" "She doesn't call him any names," explained the girl. "We love each other in our house." No rain this past week, but later on this week they (the weather men) promise some scattered showers which will be better than nothing. In west Texas you didn’t want it to rain because the dove would have plenty of places to get water other than around the water tanks which were always the best place to shoot the dove in West Texas.

To all the teachers and students in the world, congratulations, we have survived the first week. To all the school secretaries and administrators, you have at least another week of mayhem to survive. I don’t know why that first week is so hectic. All I know is the kids are just not ready to settle down in class and the hours seem to fly by while nothing gets done! Donations were accepted for the Parsons.

Back-to-school means different things for different families. In Texas, this time of year brings the traditional joys of watching our youth put on football pads to engage in friendly, but serious competition. That same competitive spirit also should be encouraged in the classroom. As the new academic year gets underway, remember parents and grandparents are our children's greatest coaches and teammates.

Perhaps you remember the song by the country band, Alabama, titled "Angels among us." The song lyrics include lines such as "a kind word from a stranger to lend a helping hand" and "a phone call from a friend just to say I understand" as a couple of examples of what the angels among us look like. Could it be that you and I have the potential to be somebody’s angel? My mom called me one Sunday to tell me about all the angels who helped her that day.
