Due to a break in the main line, North San Saba Water Supply Corporation is required by the state, when the water pressure drops below 20 PSI to issue a boil water notice (BWN). To ensure destruction of all harmful bacteria and other microbes, water for drinking, cooking and ice making should be brought to a vigorous boil and then boiled for two minutes.

The San Saba County Commissioners Court met on Monday August 9th at 9 a.m. in the County Judge’s Chambers. County Judge Byron Theodosis called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone. For generations, women have made quilts for both practical reasons and as a durable and endearing way to be remembered by future generations. San Saba’s museum, located at Mill Pond Park, has an impressive collection of vintage quilts. The collection was recently enhanced by a special gift donated by Lonnie Henderson of Florence, Texas in memory of his late wife, Ruth King Henderson. Ruth’s parents were Alice Heyman King and Thomas (Uncle Tom) Harvey King.

San Saba Garden Club August Yard of the Month - The San Saba Garden Club has awarded the August Yard of the Month to the home of Linda and Owen Parks at 505 Dry Street. This is the historic Campbell-Parks house, built in 1876, which was home to Owen’s great aunt, wife of John Campbell.

Dysphagia, A.K.A. difficulty swallowing, is fairly common throughout the elderly community and can be found in younger age groups as well. Dysphagia is often a symptom of some other disease process. Some of the more common causes of dysphagia are stroke, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, and esophageal blockage. Basic signs that clinicians look for when considering dysphagia are food sticking in the throat, coughing or choking, wet voice, and nasal or oral regurgitation.

Ingredients 3/4 stick butter 3 large eggs 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 1/2 cups sugar 1 cup canned pineapple, drained, crushed 1 cup coconut flakes 1 9 inch pie shell (9 inch) unbaked Directions: Melt butter and mix with remaining ingredients. Pour filling into unbaked pie shell and bake 1 hour at 350 degrees F. or until set and brown.

25 Years Ago - July 25, 1985 Dr. Roy Lee, a San Saba physician filed suit in 33rd District Court against San Saba National Bank, bank president Mike Hinyard, and Jimmy Moore, administrator of San Saba Hospital. We had .3 inch of rain Friday night here in Richland Springs, but the rodeo was rained out at Elm Grove. They had just gotten about three events out of the way when it started raining. We waited awhile, thinking it might stop, but the arena was just too muddy and the lightening was too dangerous for the kids and horses.

I was listening to an audiobook this past week: "The Persian Pickle Club" by Sandra Dallas, a story set in Depression-era Kansas. One of the female characters had gone off to college and earned a degree in Home Economics. The narrator of the story says she never understood why someone would want to spend all that money and time to learn the same thing that they learned at home anyway.

Glory be! Late Saturday afternoon a cloud came up and dumped 9/10 inch of rain on the Price place. The wind blew and lightening struck a large tree and splintered it much to the delight of their goats. Across the river they reported anywhere from none to 2/10 and one report of 7/10 inch.

Your column comes to you this week from Southern Ontario, Canada. I’m spending some quality time with my family here in the Thousand Islands area. It’s finally raining here today. They have been promising rain all week, but like our area, it just kept passing by. Unlike our area, it has only been in the 80’s all week.

This tree was blown down in the storm that came through the Colony area Saturday evening. The homeowner, Marjorie McDowell, said the tree had previously survived being struck by lightning many years ago. You can see the damage from the lightning in the photo to the left. Her son Mike said the tree had been nicknamed 'Lazareth' because of its age and size some 50 years ago by a man who would shake the tree for pecans.

Ann Thompson, the widow of Country Music Hall of Famer Hank Thompson, has commissioned Deep In The Heart Foundry in Bastrop, Texas, to create a larger than life size bronze of the Country Music Icon. Upon its completion, the $40,000.00 bronze will be placed at the Heart of Texas Country Music Museum in Brady, Texas. The idea for a life size bronze of the Country Music great began before Thompson passed away.

In cooperation with the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC,) the Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, has recently developed a mobile Veterinary Emergency Team (V.E.T.) to respond to disasters that affect animals state-wide. The new team is deployable under the state animal response plan in a disaster situation where there is need for additional veterinary assessment, triage and care.

You don't have to travel far this summer to see wildlife in its natural habitat. Community groups can help your children learn how local animals affect people and the local environment. After seven months of training in everything from water rescue and state-federal law to alligator handling, the 41 cadets of the 55th Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Game Warden class have closed one chapter of their lives and begun a new one with their graduation Tuesday as state game wardens. The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met August 5, 2010 and were surprised by the big machinery in the parking lot preparing for paving of the parking lot! This has been a dream for Larry Hardin for years and he and Becky donated half of the cost of the materials which was met by the young business men of San Saba and the City of San Saba will do the labor.

The Board of Directors of Operation Orphans, Inc. has selected five dates for doe hunts during the forthcoming whitetail season. The San Saba County Ministerial Alliance and the Dove Project are pleased to offer school supply vouchers in the amount of $20 for families that meet specified income guidelines. Ask the Experts My daughter has always been a good student in school, but this year she has really changed. Her behavior has been so out of hand that I just don’t know what to do anymore. We do have a good relationship, and good communication, but she’s just a different person anymore.
