Richland Springs will hold their 13th Annual Stars & Stripes Celebration on Saturday, July 3rd, 2010. A parade will kick off the day beginning at 9:00 a.m. There will be activities for kids, vendors, horseshoes & washers, 4 wheeler & go cart mud races, a 42 tournament, and a watermelon competition. RC Willey & The Sunriders Band will perform at 5 p.m., followed by a fish fry at 6 p.m.

During Roadcheck 2010, which ran from June 8 through June 10, DPS troopers inspected 6,906 commercial vehicles. During the three-day campaign, 25 percent of the vehicles inspected in Texas (1,738) were placed out of service because they were found to have serious enough safety violations to be removed from service until repairs could be made. It used to happen to different types of livestock but now people are having it done. They say, "It is the thing to do" or the latest trend. Vast numbers of people are getting tattoos, brands or body piercing. It is not new and not just in the United States.

Back a long time ago when we were kids and people used to visit each other at night us kids would sit and listen to them tell stories about stuff they used to do and laugh at different things that had happened. Most of the conversations were about stuff that had or was happening at the time but occasionally one of them would get off on some old tale about a particular funny happening that they’d ether been a part of or maybe just watched.

55 Years Ago - June 23, 1955 Bobbie Locker was proclaimed as the Rodeo Queen for 1955 by selling over $700 worth of tickets to obtain the honor. A major quail re-stocking program, in which a total of 1000 birds yearly will be released, is being carried out on the Ray Smith ranch in the Southwestern part of the county. San Saba Cub Scouts recently received advancement awards.

Today (Monday) has been cooler than usual and we got some rain this morning. It sure was nice. Rain is in the forecast every day this week. The Stars and Stripes celebration scheduled for Saturday may get rained on. I remember that it was rained out the very first year and had to be re-scheduled for the following Saturday. We start another new month later on this week.

You are probably as aware of the weather the past few weeks as is the rest of us. We’ve incurred a fairly warm stretch early this summer. That in itself wouldn’t seem so severe had it been a bit more moist. It has really been trying to rain on us earlier in the week, but San Saba seems to have missed on any of the measurable moisture.

There were some areas of the county that was lucky enough to get some rain this past week, but not out at the Bend. There is some hope that rain will come this week. R.J. Henniger was at the town hall meeting which takes place at Bad Bob’s Bait Store and he reported that we were going to have a huge amount of rain this week and it was going to be so much that the river would flood everyone that lives near the river.

The girls are here with me again this week. We have a full week of "busy" planned. The girls are going to help me decorate for the 4th of July and VBS. They have some craft things to complete, and we also have to make Sarah a pair of pajamas to take with her to Peru.

Celebrate the Independence Day weekend in Fredericksburg on Saturday and Sunday, July 3rd and 4th, with live pari-mutuel horse racing at the Gillespie County Fairgounds. Santos and Stacie Elizondo of San Angelo, Texas are happy to announce the arrival of their daughter, Sophia Grace Elizondo. Sophie was born at Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo on June 10, 2010. Eventide Nursing Home found another way to celebrate summer... an Indoor Hawaiian Luau. Our residents sipped on tropical treats, played Hot Coconut, What's in the Suitcase?, and Pail Toss. Fifteen young golfers attended the San Saba Jr. Golf Camp from June 21st through June 24th. Pro Keith Harris and Golf Coach Ronnie Schulze, assisted by Shelby Hardy, instructed the youngsters on Fundamentals of the swing, chipping and putting.
