Alice Smith and Karen Faught of the San Saba News & Star and Skeebo Norris of KBAL Radio were named to the Media Honor Roll, a program sponsored by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB), by San Saba ISD. The Media Honor Roll recognizes media representatives statewide who deserve recognition for fair and balanced reporting of news about public schools.

Abby Dellis, San Saba County 4-H’er, participated in the District 7 4-H Horse Show in Sweetwater recently. She placed 8th in Western Horsemanship and 7th in Trail. Participants were from all 23 counties in District 7. Abby is the daughter of Shana & Sonny Paddie and the granddaughter of John and Margie Benner.

The Board of Trustees of San Saba ISD held a Regular Meeting on Monday, June 14th at 6 p.m. in the Central Administration Office. President Darrin Barker called the meeting to order followed by the invocation and everyone joined for the pledges to the American and Texas flags. All Trustees were present for a quorum. Newly elected trustees, Susie Nettleship and Kevin Shahan, were sworn into office and repeated and signed the Oath of Office.

A contractor for TxDOT, Ajax Equipment Co., will be doing repair work on the Colorado River Bridge loacated on U.S. 190, east of San Saba (between San Saba and Lometa). Work will start on Wednesday, June 23, 2010, at 7:00 a.m. and could last all day. The work will involve stopping traffic for extended periods while damaged bridge supports are removed and then later new parts are fitted and replaced.

LCRA Transmission Services Corporation (LCRA TSC) has put on hold further development of an 85-mile transmission line in the Texas Hill Country awaiting further guidance from the state on whether the project still is needed. National Debt Hits a Staggering $13 Trillion-Out-of-control spending has put the United States in a tenuous economic position. The national public debt hit an historical $13 trillion dollars in May. In pursuit of its costly and damaging big government agenda, the Obama administration has increased the total public debt by $2 trillion – an increase of 23 percent – in just 16 months.

The Church of Christ is having camp at Brady this week... Many children and adults are enjoying this camp. Jerry Randolph, Diane Maxim and Deneise Woolsey have taken thirteen children to Centri-kid Camp in Sherman, Texas. I believe their camp is at Austin College. Funeral Services for Becky Cockrum were held in Georgetown last week.

I am amazed at people who are good at "arts and crafts." Some people can take scraps and make wonderful things. As I write this, I am at Bible camp in the room where arts and crafts are created. There is quite a bit of hammering taking place. Some items are made of metal and fishing wire.

We still haven’t received any rain this past week and we are showing a need for it. Summer officially began Monday and we have already had some hot days. We only had nine present for the community meeting last Saturday night. There seems to be a general lack of interest and if that doesn’t change, there soon won’t be anyone left to oversee the community center.

Our family decided to plant a bigger garden this year. It started off with my wife wanting me to till that old hard ground. She started bringing in mulch material for me to till in and I did not think she was ever going to stop. I finally got all the material tilled in, then started the watering.

We fulfill one of the purposes for our existence when we seek God (Acts 17:26-27). When we seek Him, we consult with Him. We take our joys and difficulties to Him in prayer. We seek direction from Him by reading the Bible. We receive light from God as we ply the pages of the Bible (2 Peter 1:19). Ultimately we need strength and power from God.

I was comfortably ensconced on my front porch, reading and enjoying the breeze, when I realized I needed to write the column. Sundown is an awesome time of the day. It’s usually not quite so hot, and everything seems to be busy getting ready for bed. Everything, that is, except the katydids.

The Wallace Creek Extension Education Club met Thursday, June 17 at 2:00 p.m. at the clubhouse. Lynn Blankenship called the meeting to order. The roll call was "When was the last time you cleaned out your medicine cabinet and what did you do with the contents?" We need to take precaution in disposing of certain medications, when in doubt contact your pharmacy. The program was "Talking to Your Doctor", presented by Faye Currie.

The marking of a Texas Ranger's grave with the Texas Ranger's Memorial Cross helps to honor and preserve the true history of the Texas Rangers.

Hailey Ann Marie Sutton, was born May 28, 2010, weighed 7 pounds 4 ounces and was 19 3/4 inches long. Her proud parents are David and Mary Sutton. Dear Editor, When you look at the TxDOT website and those they partner with such as Don't Mess with Texas and Keep Texas Beautiful, they are all about having pride in our truly wonderful state. However, as I drive down most Texas roadways (including the dirt roads that are tended to by the county) it seems that the Texas agencies that are responsible for keeping our roadways safe and clean have lost pride in Texas.

On June 12, 2010, the Oliver family and friends enjoyed visiting at Harmony Ridge and eating a wonderful fried fish supper prepared by Marlis and Scotty Oliver and family. Approximately 75 attended the meal following the Harmony Ridge Cemetery Association annual meeting. On Sunday, the 13th, the family gathered in the church building for the devotional.

The descendants and friends of J.W. and Hattie Mallett Stewart held their annual reunion the weekend of June 12 and 13. The Stewarts had ten children with only two surviving, Frances Parks and Nancy Doyle. On Saturday evening, 62 gathered at the home of Doris Cates for a lot of visiting, hamburgers, hot dogs and homemade ice cream.

It is summertime again and contractors for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) have started seal coat operations this month. Some 308 miles of roadway across the nine county Brownwood District is scheduled for this annual preventative maintenance process. ‘Seal coat’ is a process where fresh asphalt and rock is applied to an existing roadway.

Bula Mae Crim, 75, of San Saba, passed away on Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at Llano Memorial Hospital. She was born April 19, 1935 in Strawn, Tx., to William C. Alcorn and Daisy Graves. Bula Alcorn and Willard Crim were married in February of 1949 in San Saba County. He preceded her in death.

James Baker Owen, 93, passed away on Friday, April 30, 2010. James (Baker) was born in Zephyr, Texas July 29, 1916 to Adly Polk Owen and Sarah (Brown) Owen. He, his parents and brother and sisters lived in San Saba over 14 years. He graduated from San Saba High School in 1934.

Deaths from boating accidents on Texas public waters decreased last year compared with the year before and Texas game wardens, boater education proponents and others hope to keep the numbers trending downward. The Richland Springs cafetorium hosted many events this spring. The air conditioned cafetorium hosted the spring band recital, one-act play presentation, junior/senior prom and sports banquet. The 8th grade graduation was one of the best decorated events ever to occur at Richland Springs. The Hawaiian theme included live plants and parrots and birds.

The San Saba Dillos kicked off the 2010 summer baseball season with a double header against our neighbors from the north, Goldthwaite, on Saturday. In the opener Cody Herd pitched an excellent game giving up only 1 run on 5 hits and striking out 7 in 5 innings with only 59 pitches.

The San Saba Ladies Golf Association met June 17, 2010 for play day with the Chair for June, Jo Anne Hardy, calling for a game of Low Gross, Low Net, and Low Putts. School is definitely NOT out for summer! On June 1 and 2 SSISD teachers spent two intense days learning more about their CSCOPE curriculum and how to enhance the curriculum with technology. Trainers from ESC 13 in Austin presented staff with two days of training that helped staff learn more about the technology they have to use in their classroom.

The San Saba Tennis Association held a fundraiser tournament on Monday, June 14. The tournament was held to raise money to help with the cost of resurfacing the tennis courts. The Tennis Association was able to raise $500.
