The San Saba County Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce the schedule of events for the 72nd Annual Pecan Capital of the World Rodeo and Parade, beginning with June 10th, Thursday night County Wide Team Roping. Mission San Saba will begin its 7th annual home makeover on June 6, 2010. Kicking off this year's project will be a brisket sandwich lunch sponsored by the Pecan Valley Son Riders. Lunch will be served at the San Saba courthouse on Sunday, June 6, 2010 beginning at approximately 11:00 a.m.

Ryan Guidroz and Nick Tasker traveled to UIL State Solo & Ensemble this past Saturday. Ryan played "Five against Two" on the snare, and Nick played "Syrinx" on the alto sax, both played their respective solos from memory. State Solo & Ensemble is quite a bit more challenging than Region solo & ensemble, and some of the most talented high school music students in the state are at this contest. During a recent visit to the national Teen Dating Abuse Helpline (NTDAH), the Office of the Attorney General warned Texas teens and parents about the dangers of sexting. Sexting is the practice of teens sending sexually explicit messages or images electronically, primarily between mobile phones. Embarrassing or explicit messages can spread like wildfire through a school or across the country - or even get posted on public Web sites.

He is a decorated war hero for great service for our country but he was in a different kind of warfare. He was in a special forces unit, "Green Berets" in Vietnam and spent most of that time behind enemy lines. It was not easy to go into and live behind enemy lines and remain undetected.

For too long in Washington, the issue of border security has fallen off the radar. In communities along the 1,200 mile border that Texas shares with Mexico, however, the effects of a porous border are constantly evident. The violence associated with narco-terrorism, drug and arms trafficking, and human smuggling threatens the safety of local communities in Texas and other border states, and it undermines our national security.

Most parents want to make sure that their children are eating enough fruits and vegetables. Lots of kids don’t want to get close to anything green. What does a parent do? Some moms and dads have resorted to hiding fruits and vegetables in food. This practice has gotten mixed reviews from nutrition experts.

The flowers are fading. The wildflowers that make us "ooh" and "aah" are going away. The bluebonnets are only a memory now. They were beautiful while here, but have turned to seed. We hope to see them in the spring. Just like flowers fade away, so does mankind. We live on this earth God has so gloriously given to us and, after a while, we die.

25 Years Ago-May 23, 1985 Memorial Day, May 27, will not be a holiday for students in the San Saba ISD because of the days missed due to bad weather. Last Tuesday night we had a very hard rain, producing 4.1 inches here at our house. It did not cover much territory , however. Elm Grove received 2 inches and some places in between Richland Springs and Elm Grove got none. "Isolated showers" had been predicted but that was definitely more than a shower.

Funding will help ensure first responders have the resources to keep Texas communities safe, Cornyn says WASHINGTON— Austin Fire Department will receive a grant of $611,360 to support firefighters and their work as first responders, U.S. Sen. John Cornyn announced Friday. The funding can be used for training and support operations, and to purchase firefighter safety and rescue equipment.

Yes, our children are out of school. They have completed another year in the classroom. Parents are glad to see the educational process of their children move forward. After all, a person’s education determines a lot about his or her future. A good education can ensure a good job, a better income, a nice home and greater happiness.

Hope everyone had a safe and happy memorial day. Monday, a prayer breakfast was held at the El Jalapeno restaurant for the veterans of the Wiley B. Murray Post NO. 27, and was well attended by the vets living in San Saba County. The rain that fell this past week was really something else.

The federal government is still collecting information for the 2010 Census, but preliminary population numbers shows that Central Texas is booming. Travis County now has more than 1 million people, while Hays and Williamson counties are among the fastest-growing in the country, according to 2009 population estimates recently released by the Census Bureau.
